Apparently, just like Age of Empires II and Age of Mythology, Rise of Nations, another rts published by microsoft, is getting an 'HD' version on steam. I just noticed this in the 'coming soon' tab on steam, and as I couldn't find any topic about this here, I thought it was worth it letting others here know, as it is a great old title.

It's a pity it's steam-only, but it's better than not getting that classic back. I still have it on cd-rom, so I won't buy it any time soon, but there are probably many people around who never got the chance to play it, or who didn't even know about the game.

For those who have never played it: it's a rts from prehistoric age until the present, but with a few civilization-influenced things, like having to build a lot of cities, and not having walls, but instead having a territory you control on the map. I can't really do it justice here, but it's great and if you like good real-time strategy, you should play it.

Well, now I'm hoping a new version of Age of Empires I will also pop up.

It was a Brian Reynolds game wasn't it? I remember it playing like Civilization but in real time. Well, real time as opposed to turn based in any case.
There wasn't a topic, but just to stroke my massive e-peen I did ninja you in the Gaming Deals thread.

Yes, it was. That's were many of it's unique elements came from.

I just noticed it (after I made this), but still, this game deserves a topic on its own.
Cool now I can totally suck in HD! :P

It does and I was tempted to make one way back when I found out about it, but I just don't care enough about it to be the one to do so. ;)

Here's the dev's homepage. It's the same folks who did Age of Empires II and Age of Mythology Extended Editions.
I have the DRM-free retail Gold version already, so I'll skip the Steam version.

Two things:

- I hate the timers on the RoN missions. This alone has killed my interest towards the game. It just doesn't make any sense that you e.g. have only 90 minutes to conquer all enemy cities, and it is irritating as heck. Sure other RTS games (like Age of Empires) also had some timed missions, but only occasionally. In RoN they seem to be the norm.

- How about Rise of Nations 2: Rise of Legends, and more importantly: will Microsoft now at last put the RoL update servers back online, or at least release an official offline patch for the retail RoL?

A big F U to Microsoft in case they decide to re-release RoL, but still refuse to let original RoL customers update their game.

Another great RTS game about to be defiled and turned into trash, worst of all plagued by steam DRM.

If only the originals would make it here on GOG, M$ might actually see some money from me.

I was wondering if Rise of Nations was the next one, if there was going to be a next one. Turns out yes.

There's also Rise of Nations: RIse of Legends. It's more recent, but they can still integrate the Steam features and make it a little prettier. It's a source of DD revenue just like the rest, so I can see it happening.

It is a pity that these are only on Steam, agreed, but I can understand it. The infrastructure and tools are there to be taken advantage of, along with the large customer base.

i am happy because i really love this game :)
I wonder if Skybox or another company will bring "Freelancer HD" to Steam.
There are a ton of Microsoft games I'd like to see on GOG!

Here are the wishlists for:

Age of Empires - An incredibly fun RTS game through time!

Freelancer - A great space-faring/combat sim with trading between systems!

Rise of Nations - I've always wanted to try this game. It looks like a really cool RTS game!

JFYI, this Gold Edition published by Ubisoft from Amazon has no DRM or CD check. It has a registry dependency, but that's no big deal.
Probably won't go very far if at all, but if there's enough noise, maybe they'll explore a GOG.com version, if not for Rise of Nations, maybe in time for Rise of Legends.
