I agree, it's sad to see anyone's life cut short by drugs. However, since PSH has been in rehab and never in prison, I'm not sure you made a very effective point.

I just saw Moneyball the other day and thought he was great.

Awh shit, RIP Hoffman, you were an awesome actor. Stupid heroin. I loved him in Doubt and Twister, playing two radically different characters that were both solid all the way through.

I still remember it like yesterday, seeing Hoffman jerking off and using his semen as glue in Happiness. Great movie, great role, great actor.

Can't say I'd ever heard of this guy until today...

I was genuinely shocked to read about his passing as I wasn't aware of his battle with drug addiction. One of the best character actors in Hollywood who could do it all from comedy to more dramatic fare with equal aplomb, truly a Master of his craft. R.I.P

It's still sad that these people don't have any privacy at all. Must all the world know that he died of drugs? Imagine his family and especially his kids seeing their father on the tv with the headline: "died of drugs". The American media are criminals and contribute to death of people.

Mhh alcohol less damaging, don't know bout that man. I know two friends who died of alcohol overdose (brain infarction) but they were heavy alcohol consumers. Most of these rich "stars" turn to drugs and alcohol to escape the pressure I guess. Imagine going to the store, fitness, park and being photographed and harassed by people taking pictures of you :s

In Europe we don't have this celebrity culture (or much less than in US), I see actors in my country run around and no one even notice them.

The point is when a celebrity overdoses people are nice and understanding about it. When an inner-city kid dies from overdose people don't bat an eye or question his prison record. Let's understand what addiction is across the board and treat it the right way for everyone.

This is not the case for everyone so please stop generalizing. My niece works with people who are recovering from addiction (since her own father was a heavy user for years) and I volunteer there as well. There are kids who are 14 that are addicted to chemicals like glue, there are single mothers that inject heroine. Just last week there was a homeless dude that almost died in the metro with a needle in his hand. We help these people recover, find jobs again, function in society, find them shelter and home, find foster parents for their kids. It's not an easy thing and recovering from addiction takes months and years. If you suddenly stop injecting an addict, he/she probably will die in 2 days of pain. So it's not about a celeb being an addict that we have to feel bad for him/her (as I mentioned everyone dies). Even if they ever stop inject chemicals, they still have to take other meds (like pain killers) to calm them down.

He chose his own life style and died, and just saying let's understand and treat them won't do anything. If you want to help out, go to an AA meeting and hear their stories...

Did I say every person on Earth thinks X or Y way about the issue? No. I am calling attention to those who feel sympathy for one drug addict but hate and scorn for another. Let's treat them all the same.

Just read the latest... there were 50 bags of heroin found in his apartment. SMH
