Rohan15: Gamefly bought Direct2Drive.
And in the process killed D2D for most ROW customers.

lowyhong: According to "statistics" posted before on RPS
I wouldn't trust any statistics they post.
Impulse was kept US-only by a xenophobic twatbasket. So okay, Gamestop haven't made it any better, but you can only blame them for not changing it.

D2D was a Rupert Murdoch company. Admittedly it has found a way to become something worse than that now. But even so.

Those stats were utter bollocks, but presented by RPS in the context of them being utter bollocks.

StingingVelvet: It is a shame to see them cannibalized, but I do hope a real competitor to Steam shows up someday and it's probably more likely to happen with a company like Gamestop or EA behind it than some random startup like beamdog.
I just hope we won't have to install and run five different clients in the future just to play our games, one is definitely enough.
I miss the price exchange glitch on GameStop / Impulse . :( Why can't they do that more often ?

Greenman Gaming sucks , GetGames is better .

StingingVelvet: I've begun buying a lot of games on amazon lately. They don't add any DRM to the game from their own system unless the game has a trial mode, which is awesome, and their prices are often low as hell.
How can I tell if a game has any DRM? I am looking at getting DX: HR on it, so I don't know if i have to register it with Steam or whatever...

avatar
Neobr10: They also got the lowest price ive ever seen for Deus Ex 3 at 10 dollars.
So do you need to register it with Steam or just install and play?

DX: HR : Steamworks . Steam required to register , download , install your game .

Bah... unless it is cheaper, probably easier just to buy straight from Steam...

You'll have to do your research if you care about the inherent DRM aspects. My point was they add no DRM of their own.
Apparently I've bought 22 games from D2D over the years. I preferred them to Steam because I didn't have to install a program to manage my games that must run while I play them. Most of the ones I bought are DRM-free and I have them all backed up anyway, so the move doesn't really affect me all that much.
Having used Impulse once for Witcher 2 (when they had that price glitch), I can say good riddance.

Anyone complaining about Steam should have a look at their monstrosity of a client.
It is slow, clunky and full of unnecessary things, not to mention that I never got to play The Witcher 2 because it required of me to have 50gb of free HDD space to install the game and it messed up the download 5-6 times so I had to restart (not good when your max is 4mbits).

Isn't their "client" mostly a shell for Internet Explorer?

I didn't really get into what it was, only got to the part that it is an abomination that defies logic.
After 2 days of trying to get the game I quit and uninstalled it all.

And sometimes it is cheaper on Amazon. Deus Ex 3 was 10 dollars just a few days ago, the lowest price ive seen for this game on Steam was 16. And its just the same as buying from Steam. You can just buy it on Amazon, get the key, add the key on Steam and there you go, you dont even need to install the Amazon downloader to get the key.

Yeah, Get Games is pretty good too, i got a few decent deals from them. But why does GMG suck? Its great, and its the best place to get cheap pre orders. They had Deus Ex 3 for 28 dollars on pre order. Thats a killer deal. THey also had COJ The Cartel for 20 on pre order. I used their custommer support once and they were helpful.
