I don't even check the reviews nowadays, as all I can see in practically any entry is "OMFG OMFG 5/5 FAP FAP FAP" spam. While it is nice in terms of pushing the idea that all the games on GOG are "good", this setup is entirely unhelpful and not much short of blatant self-promotion. Of course, the opinions are made by the users but it is GOG who manages the feedback - and they fail to compensate for the serious nostalgia glasses that are inevitable on this site.

The solution is to do it like Amazon does, display both the most helpful favorable review AND the most helpful critical review. Picture attached.

You know what might also help? Actually going through the list of reviews. They're all there, I think they just display the most recent. Also, you'd be surprised how badly some people will rip on a game. Go take a look at "Master of Orion 3".

This

I bet that 95% of the people who look at the reviews don't bother to flip the page and look at other ones, there are many fantastic and in-detail reviews on games like HOMM3 and other games but they are ignored and overshadowed by rubbish 3 sentence reviews

Reviews are becoming somewhat of a race, who posts a long one first - that person gets the top spot

Thanks for reminding us. They've never been useful in the first place (imo)

I think reviews have a low priority for GOG, as most of their customer base is simply "rebuying" their youth. Even if I haven't played a game when it was released, I still remember the reception of it.

They will eventually get around this one. But it certainly isn't ciritcal, as there are plenty of review sites on the net that work better than GOG.

Yeah, I've never played the game, but the first review for Master of Orion 3 (by user Pigeonbane) is just hilarious.
Just stay away from any game averaging 3 stars unless you know better. Think long and hard before buying a 3.5 star game.
From other thread http://www.gog.com/en/wishlist/site/game_review_moderationbugfix
vote if someone agrees that reviews ought to be managed better.

That's a horrible approach. Any average or score is very prone to bias, be it positive or negative. Only actual written arguments can have any merit, and even that has to be read closely.

it's not whether it's critical or not, but whether it details the game content. The same things can be sometimes approached as good or bad depending on taste.
are reviews ever usefull? the best way is always to just check youtube or whatever for gameplay and judge for yourself.
Well, if you are too lazy to scroll down or to another page to see the better reviews, then it's only your problem and not the site's.
Yeah, with higher popularity gog also received bigger amount of fans who don't understand what a review is.

I disagree that recviews weren't helpful at all before. I found them helpful many times before, to be honest.

discussion is always much more informative than a single opinion. Forums are more informative than isolated reviews
