By this I mean, does every fucking indie dev have to copy Zelda, Mega Man or Mario Bros? We all loved those games, time to move on. Even if they happen to be stuck in 8-bit graphics.

I got a lot of slack for commenting that on a different forum. I agree, it's about time they started putting more effort into their games.
I do feel that, on this site of all places, if I want to play an old game, I can play an old game. In that context, buying a new game pretending to be an old game can seem pretty silly to me.
It is a trend. Some lazy devs out there too. Wonder what the next trend will be...

Sad thing is people are treating it like they're all new ideas. Kids these days...
Yes, but they only copy "easy to make" games, ie platformers and simplistic action-games.

You won't see many indie devs cloning Wizardry or Ultima because gosh darn games like those take a lot of work than just coding an engine for "running" and "jumping".

Really....? cRPG clones were non-stop on kickstarter at one stage...

Platformers take a lot of balancing and level design issues among other thing, do you even know how develop games?

While I agree that we have enough of Zelda-style RPGs and all sorts of platformers, I wouldn't mind some old-style pnc adventures, like the ones made by Wadjet Eye.

And?

So do cRPG's, but CRPG's have dozens of skills, attributes, classes, abilities. Every skill needs programming to have checks work in the game, you need animations for every creature in the game, if the game has branching dialogue that's a huge amount of work. If a CRPG has a stealth skill, then that means basically making an entire new game-within-the-game.

CRPG's also need to be viable to play in multiple different ways, a fighty party, a thiefly stealthy party, a mage party, etc.

What can a player do in a platformer except for running and jumping? They are the ultimate game of lazy indie developers without creativity or the will for long-term complex projects.

You've really never played a decent platformer have you?

The only other example of something like this that I can think of was back in the age where EVERYTHING had to be in 3d.

I've been tired of low res retro games for a while now. It's fun to play something like that once in a while, but when every other game tries to look retro, it's just annoying.

It' meant to be going against the flow of "ultra realistic" graphic typically seen these days. It' indies showing they're not mainstream.

Steampunk/Cyberpunk, at least when it comes to taking the place of the zombie fed. A development I find rather pleasant thought.

you guys are silly... I don't mind if the game looks like a lego brick as long as the gameplay is GREAT - that's how I choose my games.
