Roman5: Indie developers trying to make "Old style" games suck at it because so far I haven't seen a single game which matches the old classics

When was the last time an indie made a game as good as the megaMan games or one of the old contra games?
Noitu Love 2: Devolution, Treasure Adventure Game, Mina of the Pirates (sadly never finished), Cave Story, La Mulana.
It seems like most of the retro fever stuck to NES era where the blocks are easier to made. We need more SNES/Genesis era style work.

I concur.

Now that's what I'm talking about! thanks for the link. I hope the developer finish it.

me too, but the progress seems a little... slow (still in alpha phase, an update once a year)

still, I'd love to play this game once it's fully done :)

Oh I remember Polygon told me about this game. Yeah, right now I already shy away from "Faux 8-bit" formula and prefer "faux 16-bit" formula.
Indie platformers I would put up against the classics of yesteryear:

Braid
Cave Story
La-Mulana
Limbo
Super Meat Boy
VVVVVV

I've no problem with indie devs trying to walk a well known path.
For me its the same with AAA games.....there are many but i only want to play a
few of them and even less are fun to play. You can't find a gem every day.
Its like the old shareware .... one game was a success so everyone tries to
duplicate it.
Sure it would be nice to see them advance to the next lvl. But thats a question
of money. It cost to buy a good engine. Self made takes it time and costs even more.

tinyE: The retro graphics don't bother me, AT ALL, it's the lack of originality that can get a tad trying, and that's kind of the point I got from the OP. 8 bit with some CREATIVE gameplay would do wonders; if I find myself in another fucking castle looking for another fucking princess, buying potions from another fucking old man in a cave I'm afraid I may have to shoot myself.

Kunovski: I'm pretty sure the Hammerwatch was the trigger for him :)

and I must agree that this game looks so dull I didn't even finish watching the trailer...

but look at Rogue Legacy for instance - it has all the attributes you've mentioned would kill you, yet one can rarely find such a great platformer with a constant "one more try and I'll go to sleep" effect (and I don't like platformers, the last one I enjoyed was Cave Story)
Funny thing is I'm very seriously considering getting Hammerwatch, just not at 20% off. I can wait.

different tastes are good :) this way I won't hit on your girl and you won't hit on mine :D (if I had one, that is)

I dunno about Super Meat Boy. That thing doesn't have any older game counterpart....

The beta of Hammerwatch should still be available at their website. It is almost the same as the finished product, has quite a bit of gameplay in it, even working online multiplayer. You should check it out and see if it's something you might enjoy. But if you like Gauntlet, or the only version of it to grace the PC proper, Get Medieval!, then you should get it.
