Just a thought, a list of available screen resolutions available for each game would be nice, so i could decide if i want to install a game on my pc with a regular monitor, or on my pc with a widescreen monitor.
That would be really useful. Some games make it clear what resolutions are available, but many don't, and you end up having to search around for any scraps of information.
Try here :

pretty extensive; probably not all games but still :)

Your main concern is the aspect ratio. Old games were all 4:3. Newer games all have widescreen support 16:10 or more commonly 16:9. Unfortunately widespread widescreen support havent existed for as long as I would like with even, as far as i know, gta 3 not supporting it. However, If there is one thing that I have learned from gog is that if a game did not support widescreen originally, then somebody somewhere as made it his business to create support for it with a patch. And it usually works pretty good. I remember searching everywhere for a decent 19" 4:3 monitor specifically to play games without widescreen support but these days I don't bother anymore. For example: fallout, planescape torment, arcanum and dungeonkeeper are some of the games which I managed to play widescreen without a problem. So rather stick to your, probably newer, widescreen monitor. Newer monitors have better contrast ratios so the games look better in any case.

This.

And I'd like to add that you shouldn't have problems with 4:3 games on a widescreen monitor if you have everything set up properly.
All what you said is true, the link i provided , allow for some older games to use some hack / ini edit etc ...for widescreen monitor.

still , this doesn't work too good for some titles. and worse doesn't work for some others, in this case you need to play in 4:3 ratio (whcih isn't a big deal) . If you really don't like the black border at left & right , left the windowed mode.

Could you or someone explain the difference between these two in plain language? I've had a couple of games recently ask if I wanted 16:10 or 16:9 ratio, and I had no idea what to base a decision on.

Thanks for any info.

what's your screen aspect ratio ? 16:9 or 16:10

ie = 1920x1080 is for 16:9 1920x1200 is for 16:10

always use the native resolution of your screen if the game allows it :)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/16:9
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/16:10

basicaly 16:9 = TV / 16:10 computer screen : that's originaly . But now most of computer screens has a 16:9 ratio

If you ever get confused about working out what aspect ratio a given resolution is, this site is a godsend:
http://andrew.hedges.name/experiments/aspect_ratio/

Put in any resolution in the left hand boxes and it'll tell you the aspect ratio below. You can ignore the right hand boxes unless you want to work out other possible resolutions of the same aspect ratio.

Yeah, I mostly use it to quickly calculate new resolutions in a given aspect ratio to add to the custom resolutions in my video card driver.
