I kinda enjoyed RE1, but to be frank there were better survival-horror games released only a bit later. Like Capcom's own Dino Crisis, or Squaresoft's Parasite Eve 2. However, I never had anything bad to say about the controls of RE1, mainly because they worked. They did actually make sense: Lock, shoot. No problem there, because aiming wasn't necessary (whether this was because the rooms were so tiny or if there really was an auto-aim, I can't remember). But RE5's controls really feel artificial for a number of reasons: First there's the fact that the camera now sticks really close to the player. So now there's even less time to react. Secondly, you really do have to aim now, which makes the whole "lock, then shoot" concept really, really silly.
Apparently Capcom wanted RE5 to go mainstream graphics and gameplay-wise, but stay true to it's roots control-wise. And they utterly failed.

Can you define custom forum code tags? Maybe GOG should look into ones for sarcasm, joking and maybe double entendre (because everyone likes a cheap laugh). Have the text colour change to represent the different tone of voice

Or you could do something like this:
[sarcasm]Cooking Mama is the most important game of the decade[/sarcasm]
