Isn't Roman the prime example for why the whole downvoting business causes much more hassle than it's worth? He's been spamming this forum for years now precisely because it has driven him mad.

Half the time people don't even realize why their posts are being downvoted. And if they do, they're much more likely to rebel against it by becoming even more annoying. Let's face it, the people who repeatedly get their posts downrepped tend to be the ones least equipped to deal with it. And genuine trolls will correctly take it as a sign that they're achieving their goal, which is to elicit a negative emotional reaction.

This forum would be a more pleasant place if people would write it out in full if and why they feel that some line has been crossed, via PM if need be. And frankly, I'm much less concerned with whether a post, in the grand scheme of things, deserves to be downvoted than I'm with the fact that I feel that I deserve to visit the board without finding it clogged with complaints about the rep system and the tiresome passive-aggressive grandstanding the guys that repeatedly get downvoted frequently indulge themselves in.

Not all Roman's posts get downrepped, just the silly ones, it is just that there are so many of them...

I don't know why you and I are debating this. I think we can both agree the whole thing is pretty stupid. I'm tempted to start posting silly animal pictures in here just to lighten the mood.

There was this great comic on tvtropes, but I can't find it right now, so i'll just try to put it in words.

Basically imagine the story of the Emperor's new clothes.

In your version, some people start pointing out you actually don't have any clothes on, instead of being ashamed you flaunt it and shout "Hey everybody! Look I don't have any clothes on!". And everyone laughs and has a great time, except for the stuffy dudes who don't like seeing men without clothes.

In roman's version, people point out that he actually doesn't have any clothes on, and instead of being ashamed he gets offended, acts like he has the best clothes ever on and continually begs the mods to make us finally realize how cool his clothes actually are. And nowadays everyone just groans, because they're bored of it.

(Yeah ok, this doesn't make a lot of sense, but we're in a roman thread so, whatever)

You do act offensively to a range of people tho, and yes, they will then downvote even other stuff you talk about just because they dislike you. It's not something I'd do, but I could see a lot of people disliking Roman for the crap he has pulled off in the past (and no, your occasional jokes are nowhere near that)

An intriguing question! Could a driver actually drive so carefully that the velocity of his car becomes an integrable function? Let's see:
Since technical difficulties limit the acceleration of the car (this includes decelerating), there can only be a finite number of points in time where the car surpasses any given velocity. So apart from minor fluctuations, it will be strictly monotone decreasing - which in turn implies there has to be a constant stream of vehicles getting in front of it (assuming that even a careful driver would accelerate if the road is clear); and those vehicles have to go back into the lane with an ever decreasing safety margin, otherwise our driver would have no need to slow down any further.
Now we may hit a limitation, depending on how careful the driver is: There is a time span when the car in front accelerates, but the next car from the constant stream doesn't quite fit into the gap. During this time span, our driver could accelerate somewhat since the safety distance will be sufficient if he is driving very slowly (and thus surpass a certain velocity an infinite number of times). A driver of this type will always reach his goal. If, however, he does not accelerate because he can already spot the next car, he might be screwed.

In conclusion, we have learned the following: If you are an extremely careful driver and there are a lot of REALLY reckless drivers around, you should not keep a safe driving distance!
