Bringing back the best traditions of eXtraterrestrial COMbat!

Xenonauts, the spiritual successor to the classic 1990s X-Com games bringing back and expanding all of their strategic depth and tactical greatness, is available on 20% off on GOG.com. That's $19.99 for the first week!

Xenonauts is a spiritual successor to the classic X-Com strategy games from the 1990s. We aim to improve the graphics, add new content and streamline the interface whilst still retaining all of the key mechanics of the original games. Devoted fans should love this game, but we're also keen to introduce the joys of old-school grand strategy to a whole new generation of players who might not otherwise experience it! In this robust strategy game you control a multi-national military organisation defending a Cold War-era Earth from an alien invasion, using small squads of persistent soldiers to eliminate the extraterrestrials and recover their technology in turn-based ground combat. A detailed strategic layer allows you to co-ordinate the defence of the planet, using your interceptors to shoot down UFOs and researching captured artefacts to learn about your foes and unlock new combat equipment to use on your missions. The game comes with a full MP3 sountrack!

The alien overlords' plan was as simple, as it was brilliant: "wait for the 2014 DRM-Free Summer Sale to start on GOG.com, and conquer the Earth with minimum resistance while everyone is busy tracking the Flash Deals". Stay vigilant, defender of our home planet! Only you can foil the extraterrestrials' scheme and show them that the human race is not to be messed with, in Xenonauts, for $19.99 on GOG.com. The 20% off special release discount will last until Monday, June 23, at 1:00PM GMT.
Wishlisted for now. The summer sale is hitting hard :)

Cbob60: If you camp outside the door of a downed spacecraft there is a real possibility that an alien will open the door, shoot you in the face, then close the door again. They don't huddle in little clumps waiting to be discovered.
In other words exactly like in the original X-Com games. Now I'm even more excited about this release.
Does this bring back the old XCOM mechanics, such as Base Defense? That would be something that could appeal to me over EU.

Seems so. And XCOM:EW does have a Base Defense mission as well, and if not careful, you will get trampled there as well ;)

Really? Wasnt aware EW had that added in. Now I have to wait for a sale on that. Gamefly spring sale has been horribly disappointing for me this year. Perhaps I should add this one to my wish list as well.
Anychance to get the FLAC version of the OST ?
There are no psy power on this game are they?

Its quite a loss if not, some of the most intriguing mechanics of the new X-Com made by Firaxis play on these little but important feautre, especially the expansion

Original X-Com had those abilities, why most remake don't?

Will monitor for next sale, will see then
i'd love to trade my extra copy of the brilliant frozen synapse for this

Anyone known if backers will get a gogkey? if we don't I'll buy it :).Much better game than the simplified Firaxis version (have it as well...,) IMHO.....Thanks Gog :)

Wondering this as well.
Compared to the original, they have zoomed the camera out quite a bit. While this gives the player a less engaging experience, it is a price that must be paid to get a much clearer overview of the playfield.

I have a small fear that the developers only ambition was to clone an old game, which I think lacks a bit of ambition. Also, I don't like the graphic much. The original graphic had a cheesy, colorful b-movie style. The new game look a bit like clip-art.

Despite that, the price is the only thing that keeps me away from this baby!

brucemcl777: I got told about this and bought it last ( ie 12 hours ago ) from Steam. I checked last nightg and it was not here. I always give the good old guys first priority to sell me. anything over steam.

JMich: The game was available to purchase for at least 3 years, and it also had a Kickstarter at some point. The last 6 months (or is it more?) it was on Steam on Early Access. Today is its release day, and GOG got it. Steam is still listing it as an Early Access game, and it will be officially released there in ~3.5 hours.
Yeah Jmich thanks - I have known about it but the release date snuck up on me

Ditto. A steam copy will suffice for now, but sooner or later I'd like to get it here as well, one way or the other.
Okay, while I do own the first three X-Coms, and the remake is on steam for <20$, also free clones are availible, what would make me buy this game for 25$ ?

gandalf.nho: This one is easiest or harder than XCOM: EU?

Cbob60: The big difference is that xenonauts puts more emphasis on realistic squad tactics rather than learning how to beat the game mechanics. Machine guns spray bullets all over depending on the soldiers accuracy - I shot one of my best soldiers in the back trying to cut it too close in a recent game. If you camp outside the door of a downed spacecraft there is a real possibility that an alien will open the door, shoot you in the face, then close the door again. They don't huddle in little clumps waiting to be discovered. There's also a greater emphasis on aerial combat and multiple base management.
I love X-COM: EU and EW, and I played the hell out of it...but I love this too.
Thanks for the answer
