Bringing back the best traditions of eXtraterrestrial COMbat!

Xenonauts, the spiritual successor to the classic 1990s X-Com games bringing back and expanding all of their strategic depth and tactical greatness, is available on 20% off on GOG.com. That's $19.99 for the first week!

Xenonauts is a spiritual successor to the classic X-Com strategy games from the 1990s. We aim to improve the graphics, add new content and streamline the interface whilst still retaining all of the key mechanics of the original games. Devoted fans should love this game, but we're also keen to introduce the joys of old-school grand strategy to a whole new generation of players who might not otherwise experience it! In this robust strategy game you control a multi-national military organisation defending a Cold War-era Earth from an alien invasion, using small squads of persistent soldiers to eliminate the extraterrestrials and recover their technology in turn-based ground combat. A detailed strategic layer allows you to co-ordinate the defence of the planet, using your interceptors to shoot down UFOs and researching captured artefacts to learn about your foes and unlock new combat equipment to use on your missions. The game comes with a full MP3 sountrack!

The alien overlords' plan was as simple, as it was brilliant: "wait for the 2014 DRM-Free Summer Sale to start on GOG.com, and conquer the Earth with minimum resistance while everyone is busy tracking the Flash Deals". Stay vigilant, defender of our home planet! Only you can foil the extraterrestrials' scheme and show them that the human race is not to be messed with, in Xenonauts, for $19.99 on GOG.com. The 20% off special release discount will last until Monday, June 23, at 1:00PM GMT.

Fever_Discordia: So... How does this compare to the official XCom reboot and/or those 'UFO' series games?
Look cool, just a little beat to the punch...
Xenonauts is good if you yearn for the old gameplay of UFO: Enemy Unknown / X-COM: UFO Defense with some refinements. However, XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Xenonauts are pretty complex in their own ways, but I find the latter pretty unforgiving.

And while I do like XCOM: Enemy Unknown / Enemy Within, I don't think I'll be coming back to it without the Long War mod.

brucemcl777: Guys - you waited too long - I got told about this and bought it last ( ie 12 hours ago ) from Steam. I checked last nightg and it was not here. I always give the good old guys first priority to sell me. anything over steam.

So get your listings up earlier please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I backed the Kickstarter: had I known, Xenonauts would appear here, I would've preferred a GOG key over Steam (if possible), but at first it looked like GOG wouldn't accept the game on their catalog, so... Oh well. Gonna check the game next week or so. Looks really interesting.
I'm very happy to see this game here. Great release.

Hesusio: So GOG is doing the early access things now, huh? In any case, $20 is a bit steep, and I'd much rather have a complete game, so it can sit on the wishlist for the moment.
This is the complete game, not an Early Access one :) Of course, there will be periodic updates but it's complete :)

tburger: Glad GOG guys changed their mind about Xenonauts and decided to bring it here. Will surely pick it some time later (right after I finally attach this passive cooler to my NV9600GT that I purchased ekhm...3 years ago ;-/)

HypersomniacLive: XD - if that's not "taking one's time", I don't know what is. ;-P
Coolers are like wine: they work better after sitting some years in a cellar :P

Damn, just bought an SSD plus an external HDD this weekend, not to mention a good amount of games on a certain Summer Sale :). This one will have to wait, unfortunately.
Day after release of OpenXCOM.
This is a good year.
This one is easiest or harder than XCOM: EU?
pity only in English (schade, nur auf Englisch)

triock: Nice release, wishlisted.
^This!
Cool thing---can´t get the original XCOMs?
Grap an even better remake! I like that style...

*makes note to apply this technique, wonders though if all coolers require the same time period to mature*

The big difference is that xenonauts puts more emphasis on realistic squad tactics rather than learning how to beat the game mechanics. Machine guns spray bullets all over depending on the soldiers accuracy - I shot one of my best soldiers in the back trying to cut it too close in a recent game. If you camp outside the door of a downed spacecraft there is a real possibility that an alien will open the door, shoot you in the face, then close the door again. They don't huddle in little clumps waiting to be discovered. There's also a greater emphasis on aerial combat and multiple base management.
I love X-COM: EU and EW, and I played the hell out of it...but I love this too.
Question to those that have played both this and the original XCOM, how does this compare to the original? I've never played either and i'm curious.
At the first 50% or more sale this is mine

Breja: I wonder- just how complex is this game? I really like turn-based strategies and tactical battles and all that, but I just don't have the patience to spend hours upon hours learning game mechanics and later on going through pages of statistics. And looking at the screens it seems like there might be a lot of that. I'm kind of a trigger happy tactician I guess, I like it best when the game is challenging, but easy to pick up, like Fantasy Wars, Expeditions: Conquistadors, Kings Bounty and all the HoMM like stuff.

Russonc: Not overly complex to learn mechanics....can be difficult on harder levels if you start with a poor strategy and it does not really have any in-game tutorial help at the beginning like some games these days. There is a good quickstart guide that I would suggest you read if you have trouble early on (lots of strategy videos can be found as well.) You will lose plenty of soliders with poor tactics (or even some bad luck).

edit - typos...
Difficulty and losing soldiers probably won't bother me much, even if the game kicks my ass, as long as the rules are straightforward. Still, with all the games waiting their turn and the sale still going on I'll just wishlist this for now, and check some reviews later. Thanks for the answer :)
