Bringing back the best traditions of eXtraterrestrial COMbat!

Xenonauts, the spiritual successor to the classic 1990s X-Com games bringing back and expanding all of their strategic depth and tactical greatness, is available on 20% off on GOG.com. That's $19.99 for the first week!

Xenonauts is a spiritual successor to the classic X-Com strategy games from the 1990s. We aim to improve the graphics, add new content and streamline the interface whilst still retaining all of the key mechanics of the original games. Devoted fans should love this game, but we're also keen to introduce the joys of old-school grand strategy to a whole new generation of players who might not otherwise experience it! In this robust strategy game you control a multi-national military organisation defending a Cold War-era Earth from an alien invasion, using small squads of persistent soldiers to eliminate the extraterrestrials and recover their technology in turn-based ground combat. A detailed strategic layer allows you to co-ordinate the defence of the planet, using your interceptors to shoot down UFOs and researching captured artefacts to learn about your foes and unlock new combat equipment to use on your missions. The game comes with a full MP3 sountrack!

The alien overlords' plan was as simple, as it was brilliant: "wait for the 2014 DRM-Free Summer Sale to start on GOG.com, and conquer the Earth with minimum resistance while everyone is busy tracking the Flash Deals". Stay vigilant, defender of our home planet! Only you can foil the extraterrestrials' scheme and show them that the human race is not to be messed with, in Xenonauts, for $19.99 on GOG.com. The 20% off special release discount will last until Monday, June 23, at 1:00PM GMT.
Well it's about time. Time to get it here.

Crosmando: I played a little of this during beta and my impressions were this is the real deal. This isn't another Ufo Defense clone/spiritual successor which falls short, this has all the features of the original X-com plus more, the AI seems to be better than I remember from when I played X-com and TFTD, there's more alien types in this, more weapons, more base customization, the world map/intercepts in this game actually has real strategy involved. The combat is just as deep/complex as Ufo Defense from what I played.

Note: I played it a long while ago, so it's possible it's got even better since then.
Thanks for your impressions, I had my doubts, but it seems the team behind Xenonauts has indeed delivered.
So glad to see it on GOG.

I wonder- just how complex is this game? I really like turn-based strategies and tactical battles and all that, but I just don't have the patience to spend hours upon hours learning game mechanics and later on going through pages of statistics. And looking at the screens it seems like there might be a lot of that. I'm kind of a trigger happy tactician I guess, I like it best when the game is challenging, but easy to pick up, like Fantasy Wars, Expeditions: Conquistadors, Kings Bounty and all the HoMM like stuff.
Awesome I have been following the game progress for some years but didn't know it was actually finished!
Just to show my support I'll buy it right away and hope it will be well worth the money.
That's a GREAT release! I've been waiting for this game for very long time. Finally a worthy X-COM game!
If it wasn't for the insane Summer Sale, I would have bought it right away. Unfortunately, the timing is a bit unfortunate for me. But you can bet, I'll get to play it eventually. Thank you for bringing this gem here , GOG!

Hesusio: So GOG is doing the early access things now, huh? In any case, $20 is a bit steep, and I'd much rather have a complete game, so it can sit on the wishlist for the moment.

JMich: They are not. Xenonauts is released today, thus it appeared on GOG.
Wel, they're not *yet*. They're planning to though.

Played it a couple of times during early access, very enjoyable. Waiting for the last few patches and then it's time to do a full runthrough :)

Not overly complex to learn mechanics....can be difficult on harder levels if you start with a poor strategy and it does not really have any in-game tutorial help at the beginning like some games these days. There is a good quickstart guide that I would suggest you read if you have trouble early on (lots of strategy videos can be found as well.) You will lose plenty of soliders with poor tactics (or even some bad luck).

edit - typos...

tburger: Glad GOG guys changed their mind about Xenonauts and decided to bring it here. Will surely pick it some time later (right after I finally attach this passive cooler to my NV9600GT that I purchased ekhm...3 years ago ;-/)
XD - if that's not "taking one's time", I don't know what is. ;-P
Sweet! I loved XCOM: EU, and then I loved Silent Storm even more (somehow I missed playing the original X-COMs), so I'll be picking this one up as soon as I get a bit more cash in. Apparently buying 20 games back to back on the Summer Sale chews through the game budget like nobody's business. :P

Quick question for anyone who has played the beta/early access version: does it use elevated terrain? As in, are there buildings with multiple floors, can you shoot through the floors, can you get on the roofs, do you get a bonus from shooting from higher up, can you hop up on the buses, etc?
I only found out about this one recently (thanks to another GoG thread) and all I can say is WHY!!! WHY THIS WEEK! ;)

Wishlisted... as I already snagged a few too many games and should play through a couple before I dive into this! Also Breja Conquistadors is great! It's what I'm playing now (had been waiting to nab it for a bit, finally grabbed it at the start of Summer).
I am not seeing why I would want this over Enemy Unknown. Not that they are terribly different to begin with, but this seems like a step back, only not far enough back to make it the original XCOM. So I already have a quality reboot, I am not seeing the appeal here.
What's with all the 'thanks for bringing the game here' posts?
I'm fairly certain the developers approached GOG, not the other way around.
I got the game from Steam already, but I didn't have the chance to play it to the fullest extent.

Other than that, this is a good month for X-COM fans. First, OpenX-COM, and now Xenonauts!

This one plays much more like the original (which I love). I have also played the Firaxis version for about 90 hours and like it a lot as well. The Firaxis version is much more like playing in a movie (and too me has a more linear feel to it). If you liked the original (or old school TBS in general) this one is worth a look.
So... How does this compare to the official XCom reboot and/or those 'UFO' series games?
Look cool, just a little beat to the punch...
