Bringing back the best traditions of eXtraterrestrial COMbat!

Xenonauts, the spiritual successor to the classic 1990s X-Com games bringing back and expanding all of their strategic depth and tactical greatness, is available on 20% off on GOG.com. That's $19.99 for the first week!

Xenonauts is a spiritual successor to the classic X-Com strategy games from the 1990s. We aim to improve the graphics, add new content and streamline the interface whilst still retaining all of the key mechanics of the original games. Devoted fans should love this game, but we're also keen to introduce the joys of old-school grand strategy to a whole new generation of players who might not otherwise experience it! In this robust strategy game you control a multi-national military organisation defending a Cold War-era Earth from an alien invasion, using small squads of persistent soldiers to eliminate the extraterrestrials and recover their technology in turn-based ground combat. A detailed strategic layer allows you to co-ordinate the defence of the planet, using your interceptors to shoot down UFOs and researching captured artefacts to learn about your foes and unlock new combat equipment to use on your missions. The game comes with a full MP3 sountrack!

The alien overlords' plan was as simple, as it was brilliant: "wait for the 2014 DRM-Free Summer Sale to start on GOG.com, and conquer the Earth with minimum resistance while everyone is busy tracking the Flash Deals". Stay vigilant, defender of our home planet! Only you can foil the extraterrestrials' scheme and show them that the human race is not to be messed with, in Xenonauts, for $19.99 on GOG.com. The 20% off special release discount will last until Monday, June 23, at 1:00PM GMT.
Glad to see it on gog. It's been in development for some time, so it's nice to finally see the release. Will definitely grab this one.

JMich: But ~2 years earlier isn't exactly "to the punch", is it? :P

yyahoo: beat to the punch - to do something before someone else does it
Always though it had to be just before (for a specific value of just obviously), not simply before. You wouldn't say that Humble Bundle beat Groupees to the punch concerning game bundles, nor that Desura beat Steam to the punch about early access.

No worries though :)

IAmSinistar: Likewise. You made a good point about DRM-free Day One debuts, so I wanted to cast my wallet vote in favour of that as well.

HereForTheBeer: And the publisher is new-to-gOg with this release, too. It's like a triple-bonus release-day bit of awesome.
Another plus! You're right, this really is a trifecta of damn-fine.
Cool release! Wishlisted. :)

If there's no time limit, then technically the UFO series wins. :)

Personally, I'd like to see the real originator (Laser Squad) get this kind of modern gaming treatment as well.

Okay, I get what you're saying now... I'll have to watch my idiom use around you. You're a real stickler {looks up stickler to make sure}... ;)

Meh, RTS XCOM just isn't real XCOM... :)

Agreed regarding Laser Squad. I love that game.

No worries, just a check that I recall my idioms as well. And to make sure that we both use the same meaning of the idiom, and we are not lost in translation.

Hesusio: So GOG is doing the early access things now, huh? In any case, $20 is a bit steep, and I'd much rather have a complete game, so it can sit on the wishlist for the moment.

JMich: They are not. Xenonauts is released today, thus it appeared on GOG.
According to the Steam page, Xenonauts is still Early Access.
avatar
Crosmando: Also apparently this game has very strong mod-support, and mods are already appearing, so there's a chance they'll be some "megamods" in the future that make it even better.
I second this..... lots of folks working on mods (updated maps, difficulty changes, economic changes, etc) and many just waiting for the final release today.

Yeap. But it leaves Early Access (on Steam) in ~3 hours. The release date for Xenonauts is June 16th, and GOG released it on June 16th.
Nice one! Expecting this one to get done for years and I´m happy that came to GOG!

The Steam final release might be coming "today" too, just hasn't appeared yet because timezones.

Also, the game was "finished" as of last week, as in the final build was uploaded, it wasn't "officially released" though because the devs wanted a few weeks to get some publicity and also in case some unexpected issues popped up in the final build. But this isn't Early Access, the game is finished.
A XCOM clone I never heard about, with the gameplay of the old one but a modern interface? Oo

This is sooooo right up my alley. Instabuy for me too :)

Glad GOG guys changed their mind about Xenonauts and decided to bring it here. Will surely pick it some time later (right after I finally attach this passive cooler to my NV9600GT that I purchased ekhm...3 years ago ;-/)
