Bringing back the best traditions of eXtraterrestrial COMbat!

Xenonauts, the spiritual successor to the classic 1990s X-Com games bringing back and expanding all of their strategic depth and tactical greatness, is available on 20% off on GOG.com. That's $19.99 for the first week!

Xenonauts is a spiritual successor to the classic X-Com strategy games from the 1990s. We aim to improve the graphics, add new content and streamline the interface whilst still retaining all of the key mechanics of the original games. Devoted fans should love this game, but we're also keen to introduce the joys of old-school grand strategy to a whole new generation of players who might not otherwise experience it! In this robust strategy game you control a multi-national military organisation defending a Cold War-era Earth from an alien invasion, using small squads of persistent soldiers to eliminate the extraterrestrials and recover their technology in turn-based ground combat. A detailed strategic layer allows you to co-ordinate the defence of the planet, using your interceptors to shoot down UFOs and researching captured artefacts to learn about your foes and unlock new combat equipment to use on your missions. The game comes with a full MP3 sountrack!

The alien overlords' plan was as simple, as it was brilliant: "wait for the 2014 DRM-Free Summer Sale to start on GOG.com, and conquer the Earth with minimum resistance while everyone is busy tracking the Flash Deals". Stay vigilant, defender of our home planet! Only you can foil the extraterrestrials' scheme and show them that the human race is not to be messed with, in Xenonauts, for $19.99 on GOG.com. The 20% off special release discount will last until Monday, June 23, at 1:00PM GMT.
Just when I bought the game in the Humble store :-( Would have preferred to buy it on GOG.
Oh no, I just bought this a couple days ago on GMG for Steam with a discount coupon, but I would really have loved to get it from GOG. Really thought it wouldn't make it here since it was first rejected. GOG, please make a better "coming soon" page!

Why do we need another game like this? Have we not got enough already?!

X-Com: UFO Defense, Xenonauts. Which other games are like these?
UFO:A? are RTwP, not TB, XCOM:EU has much smaller teams and not enough strategic depth, S2: Silent Storm is WW2 not aliens.
Wishlisted for now. Can't prioritize it in the middle of the summer sale! :p

rjspring: I was an original backer, glad it now has been released!

And the word of the day is "subjective". Can anyone tell me the definition?
I hope works on Xenonauts 2 are on-going and it will take place underwater..

There is never enough underwater games :-)

it's because GOG want us to buy good games twice - to support great developers ;)
actually - coming soon page really sucks and always makes me angry!
Great release!

I already own the game and think it is highly recommendable.
It works fine on Linux through Wine, albeit I'd have preferred a native version.

zeroxxx: How does Xenosauts stand against OpenXCOM and XCOM EU+EW? In terms of quality, of course.
EU+EW feels like an action movie. Quick paced, scripted, nice graphics. But less freedom regarding what you can do (only one base, a soldier can carry only one grenade, very little control over some parts like aerial combat). It is heavily scripted, which can be a good thing (It conveys a sense of story, some scripted missions break the routine, the specialized soldiers with special powers have a flavor that generic-marine-with-different-stats don't have ...) or a bad thing (it gets repetitive on second playthrough). Graphics are nice and animated, which give it a living (if slighly cartoony) feeling. Gameplay has been simplified (for example 2 actions in place of action points) and "protects" the player (when an alien first sees your men, it will often take cover, giving you a round to react), which can be a good or bad thing, depending on your preferences.

For what little I played, Xenonauts feels like the old game. More freedom of choice (in your equipment loadout, possibility to build secondary bases around the world with their own teams, in the way you will treat the UFO menace, during air combat), slower paced (more soldiers on big maps, fewer scripted attacks, you can only attack UFOs in the radar range of your bases so if you have a base in Sicily and most action happens around Australia, you'll have to wait). It is more realist, more "organic" in the sense of what should happen will happen regardless of script or fairness (meaning it can be pretty harsh when your men get machine-gunned down just after jumping out of the chopper simply because an alien happened to be nearby, but it is harder to exploit a repetitive script like in EU). Graphically, the game gives a more "static" feeling, and while the resolution is good, I find it bland (I prefered the cartoony look of the original)

Overall, EU/EW holds your hand and gives you a good ride. Xenonauts (or the original game) drops you in the middle of a war, gives you the tools to fight, and lets you swim or sink. Both styles have their merits.
Your choice :)
I think GoG has prepared a new coming soon page for Galaxy, but leaves the actual site as it is, because it would take time and money for 'maybe not enough anticipated games'.

But, that's why preorders and 'day-one' orders should be done very caustiously depending of what you really want. Just be sure of what will happen, and be patient. Especially if you have a backlog ;-)

Hm, I agree with your point for EU/EW, I have beaten the game and feel that way.

From the description, gameplay is unarguably my favorite (Xenosauts), I'm concerned about the price a bit, though. Well, I'm spoiled with sales after all.

Definitely good input. Thank you.
