Bringing back the best traditions of eXtraterrestrial COMbat!

Xenonauts, the spiritual successor to the classic 1990s X-Com games bringing back and expanding all of their strategic depth and tactical greatness, is available on 20% off on GOG.com. That's $19.99 for the first week!

Xenonauts is a spiritual successor to the classic X-Com strategy games from the 1990s. We aim to improve the graphics, add new content and streamline the interface whilst still retaining all of the key mechanics of the original games. Devoted fans should love this game, but we're also keen to introduce the joys of old-school grand strategy to a whole new generation of players who might not otherwise experience it! In this robust strategy game you control a multi-national military organisation defending a Cold War-era Earth from an alien invasion, using small squads of persistent soldiers to eliminate the extraterrestrials and recover their technology in turn-based ground combat. A detailed strategic layer allows you to co-ordinate the defence of the planet, using your interceptors to shoot down UFOs and researching captured artefacts to learn about your foes and unlock new combat equipment to use on your missions. The game comes with a full MP3 sountrack!

The alien overlords' plan was as simple, as it was brilliant: "wait for the 2014 DRM-Free Summer Sale to start on GOG.com, and conquer the Earth with minimum resistance while everyone is busy tracking the Flash Deals". Stay vigilant, defender of our home planet! Only you can foil the extraterrestrials' scheme and show them that the human race is not to be messed with, in Xenonauts, for $19.99 on GOG.com. The 20% off special release discount will last until Monday, June 23, at 1:00PM GMT.

microfen: Does anyone know if, like the Humble Bundle, GOG has the mac/linux versions available to download. I know they're not displayed, but neither are they on the Humble Bundle site.

Could someone who has already bought it check? Thanks!
Pretty sure GOG won't offer a Linux version, as GOG doesn't do Linux.

Alesh91: How does this game compare to XCOM:Enemy Within? I got that game a few days ago and absolutely loved it until late game when it got quite boring (on normal difficulty, will try Classic later later).
I think the game mechanics of Firaxis' XCOM are just too simple.
XCOM: EU was fun and challenging at first (on classic) and I had trouble keeping up with the aliens but as I played it again a second time (for an LP) it was easy as hell. If you know what to do in the first 3 months you can't lose. Never had that "problem" with the originals.

Xenonauts seems to me more like the old ones. I played an early build some time ago and it was quite reminiscent of the originals in terms of mechanics and its mercilessness. And enduring continuous hardship should be part of X-COM... :)

So I'd say Xenonauts is more complex (and probably more difficult) than Firaxis' XCOM.

Yet.

Pheace: That's probably because GOG initially rejected getting this game (a long time ago)

Smannesman: Still, GOG didn't 'bring' the game.
They just didn't reject it again.
I doubt the same people thank Steam for every release.
Can´t we thank GOG for changing idea?
Holy crap are you kidding me? I bought this on Humble because it was there with drm free builds about 2 weeks ago! Well, once again I think I'll do the good deed and support them on gog as well.
Took a page out of IAmSinistar's book and insta-bought. I do want to reward these guys for coming to GOG (who approached whom being irrelevant) - I only recently found out about this on Steam and was bummed when it did not show in GOG's "Coming Soon!" section. I figured I would probably end up getting it during a sale on Steam at some point (but much much further down the line). Now, I can instead reward these guys for releasing it here!

Yay! \o/
How does Xenosauts stand against OpenXCOM and XCOM EU+EW? In terms of quality, of course.

XCOM EU+EW has nothing on this in terms of strategy elements and simulation portions. But of course if you're a tight arse for graphics then go for that game, of course, that's probably the only element that MAY be more appealing to some.

People complain this game is slow, well that's what a strategy simulator is and it seems those people are spoilt with being hand fed and directed as to what to do every moment in a game.
VERY interesting release, I have never heard about its development (not a RTS fan) nor I plan to play the former X-COM games, but playing a recent spiritual successor and fan-homage with the essence of old and modern improvements - aye, that is something I can do.

Wishlisted for now, till next month.

Thank you, GOG.

It's a TBS game?

The global strategy is realtime with the option to pause, but yeah the ground combat is turn based.
Glad to see this game got finished and made its way to GOG. Going to have to wishlist for now, but certainly will grab it at a later date.

Genre is for me. But, like you mentioned, I'm kinda tight arse for graphic. I was born on 1985 and have had many old games beaten, so kinda have enough looking at mediocre graphics.

At the moment I'm wishlisting it.
Well, I have seen it on steam and I was seriously thinking of buying it there (there are bundles with it)
Now that it's on GOG, I wouldn't accept it even as a gift from steam. No-Drm is a great deal to me.
Thank you gog for this.
