Bringing back the best traditions of eXtraterrestrial COMbat!

Xenonauts, the spiritual successor to the classic 1990s X-Com games bringing back and expanding all of their strategic depth and tactical greatness, is available on 20% off on GOG.com. That's $19.99 for the first week!

Xenonauts is a spiritual successor to the classic X-Com strategy games from the 1990s. We aim to improve the graphics, add new content and streamline the interface whilst still retaining all of the key mechanics of the original games. Devoted fans should love this game, but we're also keen to introduce the joys of old-school grand strategy to a whole new generation of players who might not otherwise experience it! In this robust strategy game you control a multi-national military organisation defending a Cold War-era Earth from an alien invasion, using small squads of persistent soldiers to eliminate the extraterrestrials and recover their technology in turn-based ground combat. A detailed strategic layer allows you to co-ordinate the defence of the planet, using your interceptors to shoot down UFOs and researching captured artefacts to learn about your foes and unlock new combat equipment to use on your missions. The game comes with a full MP3 sountrack!

The alien overlords' plan was as simple, as it was brilliant: "wait for the 2014 DRM-Free Summer Sale to start on GOG.com, and conquer the Earth with minimum resistance while everyone is busy tracking the Flash Deals". Stay vigilant, defender of our home planet! Only you can foil the extraterrestrials' scheme and show them that the human race is not to be messed with, in Xenonauts, for $19.99 on GOG.com. The 20% off special release discount will last until Monday, June 23, at 1:00PM GMT.

kroetenschemel: Okay, while I do own the first three X-Coms, and the remake is on steam for <20$, also free clones are availible, what would make me buy this game for 25$ ?
Maybe because the remake on Steam costs 22.99€ ( = 31$ ), which, even with the current 20% discount is more than on GOG ( 18.39€ = 25$ )

Then, there is the issue of personal preferences. I tend now to avoid buying on Steam unless I can't avoid it at all. Just because Steam is too dominant a player on the market. Dominant players eventually abuse their position, and that's never advantageous for the consumer. But that's just my point of view. Also because on Gog I get an installer that is independant from a client, thus can be used on an computer that does not connect to the net.

honestly no one can answer that but you. If you are talking other titles then it seems you already made your choice before asking to be frank. My answer would be "that depends on what you feel about Steam"

One can't have too much X-com?

Also, the closest thing to actual X-com on GOG?

Smannesman: What's with all the 'thanks for bringing the game here' posts?
I'm fairly certain the developers approached GOG, not the other way around.
That's probably because GOG initially rejected getting this game (a long time ago)
Neat Release but i don't like the graphics - they look like generic flash-game graphics to me.

Still, GOG didn't 'bring' the game.
They just didn't reject it again.
I doubt the same people thank Steam for every release.
Loved X-Com: EU more than I expected to, but that seemed a bit too...erm, "modern"...for my liking. While I never got to play the originals, I think I'd like them more, so I'll wishlist this and give it a shot.

JMich: They are not. Xenonauts is released today, thus it appeared on GOG.

Hesusio: According to the Steam page, Xenonauts is still Early Access.
The devs said there's a glitch with steam not allowing them to change the status from early access to full release. Despite what the store page says it's finished (well there will probably be a few patches but you know what I mean)
Awesome release! Wishlisted for now as I don't know will my wallet survive in summer battle..

HypersomniacLive: 3 years ago ;-/)
XD - if that's not "taking one's time", I don't know what is. ;-P
I just checked it again and it seems my memory is really faulty: my TRad2 GTX lays in my drawer for a no longer than 2 years. So it is really not THAT bad - don't you think so :-P?

On the other hand while checking the receipts - I've stumbled against the one for purchasing Spacek Hulk Board Game (3rd Ed) in [blushing] ... 2009. Almost in mint condition - never played, unpacked just once. But... in 3-5 years my son will be in appropriate age to play with me...It will be a father&son family event - 10 years after purchasing :-D

Uh-huh, that doesn't even qualify for the wine ageing comparison. ;-P

Sneaky! ;-)
Yes!

I was so interested in this that I have been fighting my mouse hand to keep it from clicking "buy" on Steam.

I was an original backer, glad it now has been released!
