A brilliant combination of sci-fi movie and pulse-pounding space fighter sim, Wing Commander IV is a pinnacle of gaming excellence

Even though in the game the price of freedom is eternal vigilance, the price of Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom is only $5.99 on GOG.com.

Colonel Christopher Blair, former savior of the Confederation, has hung up his spurs and retired as a farmer on a desert world. While Blair has been enjoying the start of his well-earned retirement, a new menace has surfaced. Tensions between the outer colonies and inner Confed worlds are higher than ever. As the newly-reactivated Colonel Blair, you have to decide how to save the Confederation--or if it should be saved at all.

At the time of its release, it was the largest and most expensive video game made yet with an over-the-roof budget of $12 million. The cast was filled with SF superstars like Mark Hamill as Christopher Blair, John Rhys-Davies as James "Paladin" Taggart, Thomas F. Wilson as Todd "Maniac" Marshall, and Malcolm McDowell as Admiral Geoffrey Tolwyn. Once again, this ragged band of heroes has to save the galaxy. The Wing Commander series captured perfectly the feeling of being both a game and a movie, and Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom is arguably the most cinematic and epic game of the whole series.

The space combat is everything you expect from a WC game. It’s fast, it’s action-packed, and it’s varied, while missions range from tailing enemy ships or sneaking on an enemy base to detaining convoys and simple “kill the bad guy” battles. The music matches the game’s production value and supports the experience well. Overall, Wing Commander IV is a great addition to an excellent franchise, and will deliver a captivating experience for long-time fans and newcomers alike.

Pick up this masterpiece for just $5.99 right now on GOG.com and enjoy a true classic of PC gaming.

A shout-out goes to WC News for all the help they gave the GOG.com team of content-wranglers in getting the extra goodies together that you're enjoying with the release, as well as helping us source a our game master & the DVD videos! rampancy: It sadly doesn't work in CX11 (from my limited testing) and it doesn't work in WINE 1.5 under Wineskin - puzzling since on the AppDB someone reported that it works very well under an earlier WINE build. I'll change WINE versions and see if that helps.
Dang. Well, I guess there's always VMWare Fusion.

timppu: It must be mentioned that (apparently unlike you) I usually play my games at hardest difficulty level for the challenge,
That's a hardcore approach :-) I played WC3/WC4 on medium level. Remember in WC3 there was this sim-duel with Flash - just for kicks I set the difficulty on hardest - he kicked my ass in no time. After several retakes - I was able to shoot him down with fire & forget missiles - if I used only lasers - no luck.

Anyway - yesterday night I downloaded WC4. It was the first time I had problems with starting my GOG. Had to download AC3/video codecs to make it start. Than I had screen flippering in missions - had to go down to 16bit color. Finally: da da ! :-)
On side note: I wonder why GOG decided to use windows version. AFAIK they always preferred DOS versions. I also don't like when GOG does not include install/setup files and this time WC4.cfg is not 'editable' easily.

EDIT: On wcnews.com there is this post starting with: "Fantastic news from GOG today: the last of the Wing Commander titles in their current allotment is now available". It seems we will not see WC: Prophecy for some time here (at least not until second wave of EA calssics comes).

I loved this game -so- much. I particulary remember the very emotional ending, when the bad guy finally gets what he deserves....if you succeed at countering his smooth-talk.

Still having doubts about buying it though. Currently playing Anachronox AND Lands of Lore 2, and I got Grimrock preordered too.
Damn you GoG, stop being so awesome, I don't have enough time!

I'm not sure, but is this DVD-version only for Windows, and the original multi-CD release with grainier videos was only for MS-DOS, just like WC3? So a DOS version would have meant the CD release?
I was skeptical it would be done, AWESOME. Many thanks GOG!
The is one of THE best games ever made, in any genre, in any era.If you have not played it yet, fork over the money right now so you can experience some of the best that gaming as an art form has to offer. That's all there really is to say here.

Not sure about it...I came across this on wcnews.com
(...)Popsicle Pete reused elements of Gulikoza WC4 DVD patch and created an installer that allows owners of Wing Commander 4 (Windows or DOS) to take advantage of the DVD version's movies(...)
Just for kicks I'l try it.

Holy crap, that is one hell of a difference!

In all honesty, for mere 6$ this game is a must have.
OMG... just loved this game had the orginal game long time ago in those 4 or 5 CD sets, lolz but lost them over time.
Such an awesome game!!! I can't wait to give it a crack. Takes me back to my teenage gaming years.

The only drama I am having is not being able to get the joystick working... Any tips on how to achieve this?

Agreed, to be able to get the DVD video version alone is well worth purchasing this spectacular game again.I never expected that in a million years.
Wishlisted for now.
I don't know why, but FMV with live actors has always caused that cheesy B-grade TV movie feeling to me, while CGI FMV usually doesn't. Hence, I like e.g. Descent Freespace intros and videos better than e.g. Wing Commander 3-4 videos. If I only knew why.

Heavy Gear (which I'm still playing) has even cheesier skippable live actor FMV every now and then, I'd much more preferred if they were full CGI, and showing more about gears fighting than TV-actors shooting their mouth.

The only really offensive character in terms of acting is the main villain, and it seems he was deliberately written to be obnoxious and Joker-like. There are a few weak spots in the writing, but even Hamill is pretty reasonable here.
