Pioneer the post-apocalyptic open world.

Wasteland 1 - The Original Classic, a post-apocalyptic open world full of awe and danger, as imagined in a 1988 RPG, is available for only $5.99 on GOG.com

They say that ever since the nuclear holocaust, America is no longer a place for heroes. They say, that it is no longer the land of the free. Know, that they've been lying to you. In the atomic wasteland of the year 2087, there is still room for bravery, justice, and order. There are men and women standing guard to what is left of civilized society, facing villains, mutants, bandits, and monsters on daily basis. When everyone else just gave up, they roam the ruins of our nation's sinful past, and do the impossible to bring law to the badlands. They are the Desert Rangers, and this is their story.

Back in 1988 Wasteland 1 - The Original Classic (or just Wasteland back then) took the fresh memory of living in constant fear during the Cold War, reached for the aesthetics of the Mad Max movies, added solid cRPG mechanics, and offered gamers an experience that would soon inspire a whole gaming sub-genre. Long before Mr. Ron Perlman announced to the world that "war never changes" in the iconic opening sequence to Fallout, the post-apocalyptic grim future was a vision already present and persistent in the minds of gamers. That was mostly because of Wasteland. The open-ended free-roam gameplay, paired with incredibly rich and suggestive setting made a lasting impression on everyone who dared to visit the nuclear desert. With challenging difficulty level and great variety of NPCs, quests, and locations, this fantastic title is still a blast to play!

Do you remember playing this title, or maybe you'd like to see how the gaming post-apo craze has begun? Pick the slightly updated version of Wasteland 1 - The Original Classic, for only $5.99, on GOG.com.
Most excellent. I haven't been this excited for a GOG release in a long time, essentially because it's great to see a wish so high up get marked as "completed".

(I sure hope we don't have to add "Fallout (re-release)" for 1, 2, and Tactics on the wishlist.)

When the majority of the wishlist is "completed" (ie, everything above 300 votes or so, except for the super-legally-sticky games which [imo] should be Night Dive's focus), GOG has my permission to di... I mean, focus completely on indie games.

Zeeaire: I always confuse this game with Burntime, no matter how hard I try to distinguish between them (shame on me)...
Burntime - your post reminded me of how I had gotten in contact with one of the Max Design guys about this and other games. I wonder how that went, if GOG is in contact.

Most definitely. I am thoroughly confused as to why Albion is not here yet. Maybe some of the game assets are causing legal troubles.

Elmofongo: Despite what Crosmando and other users say that this game is actually pretty easy for an old school CRPG, I am still cautious that the game still might frustrate me with bullshit gamepla features and situations.

(Like in Ultima 4 you had to type "give", "1" and press the enter key 1000 times, or leveling up in attributes which hurts you because why?)
You can get stuck in combat until you die, if your dudes don't aren't fast enough with good enough weapons skills. Sometimes you get attacked by like 10 monsters at once. And you're stuck with that unless you quit and use the reset or win.

The key to understanding Wasteland is as follows:
1. All attributes except IQ (Intelligence) are useless at character creation, IQ gives you skill points and Skills are what do everything in Wasteland. So basically keep rolling until you have 18 IQ for all 4 rangers.
2. Can't be fluffed talking about skills, but look here: user.tninet.se/~jyg699a/wasteland.html
3. Don't use doctors, and if you do then wait till WAY late game when you're having no problems with cash. The best way to heal your party is to go the world map, and then go into the desert, when the text box says "IT IS VERY HOT" then stop, and hold down ESC to speed up time and heal, it's a bit of an exploit but you'll get no random encounters in those places while you heal.
I vaguely remember Eternity saying that I got a copy of Wasteland 2 with it, so I wonder if that includes Wasteland 1? I'll wait to see if it does include this one, but what a beast of a release!

I still wondering why we got Wizardry 6-8 but still no 1-5..the only real issues I can think off is the imported party requirement for 2 and 3 which is a pain since the party transfer utility the games had doesn't play well with DOSbox from what I recall from my past attempts. Well there was also the legal thing with Andrew Greenberg but that from what I read of the proceedings should only apply to Sir Tech(since they were the ones who made the deal in the first place) and not any company that purchased the series thereafter
I remember playing this on the C64. I'd never seen anything like it; there was so much to do!
Sadly I was too young to actually get very far.

I'm loathe to go back to it now though. I don't want that memory spoiled. :(

Since we've had this conversation before, I doubt I have anything new to add. ;)

Night Dive published the Wizardry games on Steam. Maybe they weren't interested in the originals for Steam, and that somehow affected GOG's decision about releasing them here? Of course that makes very little sense given the fact we have the Zorks, Ultimas, etc., and there are thousands of votes on the wishlist for these games. GOG would be the ideal place to pick up the originals, even if the Steam community wouldn't care much.
Good thing I slacker-backed Wasteland 2!! Though I guess I'll get to play W1 after W2 anyway xD
Is the music track (and the special effects) imported from the c64 version using the Innovation SSI-2001 soundcard emulation in dosbox?

as a side note, if they did the effort of adding voice-overs, why not update the graphics to VGA (256 color or better)? With the extra effort they could release the new version for iOS/Android devices later on (which would be a nice way to advertise Wasteland I to the newer generation).

I think they took the original graphics and vectorized them. The original graphics are still there if you change the settings when you start the game.
The paragraphs don't automatically come up though, when you get one you'll get something like:
Read Paragraph 15...

And below it will be a little icon of a book, click that and they come up (with voice narration if you have that on)

Well having looked at the community hubs for Wiz 6-8 there is a interest for the previous titles so at the very least it should get them considering it as for Night Dive's possible lack of interest in releasing wiz 1-5 I doubt that would affect GOG's decision especially since they made the deal with Gamepot and not Night Dive for Wizardry so it's more than likely it's either Gamepot holding them back or the aforementioned party transfer requirements for 2 and 3.

Still would kill to see 1-5 here.

Yeah it would suck if we lost the Fallouts. I hope GOG can reach some kind of deal with Bethesda before the end of the year.
Downloaded, installed, manual printed...

Was the survival guide part of the original release?

no especially since this doesn't seem to be running under dosbox, if it is it's a version of dosbox/dos emulator they made themselves so it's a whole new soundtrack done by the guy doing Wasteland 2's soundtrack
