Cold steel, colder ale!

Volgarr the Viking, a hardcore 2D side-scrolling arcade action platformer with gallons of blood, extreme bad-assery, and a daring difficulty level, is available 16% off on GOG.com. That's only $9.99 for the first week.

Rise, warrior! Bow to the 16-bit gods of the Arcade'ian Golden Age! Heed Odin's call! You are to become a mythical hero, the stuff of legends passed over goblets of ale at smelly inns, for years to come. Village elders will erect statues in your honor, Viking women will give your name to their firstborn sons, and men of the North will scream Volgarr!!! when storming enemy ranks, to instill dread in their foes' hearts. Of course, if you explode into a bloody fountain of bones and gore, that might not be the case. After all, here, now, you are still just a nameless, hairy, half-naked savage thrown against countless bloodthirsty foes. Can you become the legendary Volgarr the Viking? I dare you.

Volgarr the Viking is an awesome tribute to the most brutal and demanding arcade games of the 80s and 90s. With precise mechanics, simple controls, and challenging difficulty level, combined with pixel-perfect animation and a soundtrack worthy of a truly epic adventure, the game is sure to hold you in its mighty grip for hours on end.

Have your bloody blade ready and become the legendary Volgarr the Viking for only $9.99 on GOG.com!

Stooner: Reminds me also of ActRaiser...
never heard about it
Going to get this as soon as I have some spare cash, probably a few weeks time.

This looks like the old Arcade game Rastan Saga (One of my all time favorite games, own it on Spectrum and C64) with a bit of Castelvania Symphony of the Night styled visuals and then throw in a bit of the 16 bit era like Torvac the Warrior by Core Design for sheer badassery and HUGE monsters.

It looks AWESOME!!!!

Wonder if the wife would notice a bit of money going missing from the bank account?.................better not, hulk go SMASH if she found out!

I'm not familiar with Rastan but yeah, it seems to have more in common.

It certainly looks to be more reactive to environment like Volgarr.
It looks pretty cool actually.

Yes, good game. Ever play ActRaiser 2? It's even harder.
The audio feels like shit. Apart from that, this looks fucking awesome to me (still playing Rastan since 1987).
I backed this on Kickstarter and played the alpha and beta releases plus my name is in the credits.

It's a really nice game which is hard to beat. I absolutely recommend to buy it.

Yup. And this one is still beautiful today.
But we have to mention the original.. which is also beautiful. ;p

I think I may still have the cartridge lost somewhere...

Indeed, Enix made some rather interesting stuff back in the SNES days.
The whole throwing the spear by pressing Up+Attack and then jumping to use the spear as platform is ridiculously hard with a keyboard, probably will get my old crappy ebay gamepad out.

That game rocked! Probably the biggest surprise of those "X rare games you missed during SNES generation"-lists.

It's hard and unforigiving but the game design was great that losing wasn't an issue, I didn't want to blame the game, I only wanted to get better.

Volgarr looks like a solid platformer but I'll wait.
Now that I saw the trailer, I fear this game is too hard for me.
First level reminded me of Lustria and the Lizardmen race from Warhammer for some reason
