In war not everyone's a soldier

This War of Mine, a highly addictive survival game that challenges you to manage a group of civilians doing their best to live another day in the middle of a war-ruined city, is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux on GOG.com, for $19.99*.

They say that war never changes, I'm not so sure about that. One thing's certain, though - looking at the depiction of war in modern gaming it's safe to say that war games hardly change. Most of them presenting conflicts in a binary world, where it's easy to immediately tell the bad guys from the good guys, the oppressors from the freedom fighters, heroes from villains. Some titles try to present moral ambivalence, some do a pretty good job of it. But all the war games you'll come across have one thing in common. They're all stories of military struggle - be it on large scale or personal level. Stories of soldiers. Well, in war not everyone's a soldier.

This War of Mine lets the player experience the horror of war from a very different perspective. One that of a civilians, struggling day by day and night by night to find food, find shelter, keep themselves warm, keep themselves safe, keep themselves… sane. Survive. In any other game this last word would be soon followed by the cliché "at all cost". This game, however, is different. It dares to raise the question: what cost is too great to pay for your own survival? How much of your morality and humanity are you willing to gamble with in this game of russian roulette with just an off chance of a bullet missing from the gun's chamber. While the gameplay alone is nothing but addictive and fun, putting you in charge of a group of survivors trying to get by in a city ruined in a fictional - yet disturbingly realistic conflict, the tone of the game and the emotional mechanics affecting the characters leave no place for doubt: the experience of war leaves everyone involved scarred. The game, on the other hand, leaves you with a desire to play just one more round, get through another day, and another. And another.

Combining a captivating gameplay full of scavenging, exploration, micromanagement, and tough choices to make at every step, serious tone, and suggestive art style, This War of Mine is a thrilling work of modern gaming that manages deliver great fun back to back with a meaningful experience. Grab it now, for $19.99* on GOG.com.

I don´t understand people bitching about the price - what did you expect, 5.99 Dollars for a new game?
Price is okay.
Glad to see such a thoughtful game.

itchy01ca01: Totally crazy indie pricing. They could sell this thing like hotcakes with the right price. But they want to be greedy, so screw them. Ill keep an eye out for 11 bit studios and give a big fuck you to the dev team when i see them online.
Um. Wow.

Steam all time peak is slightly above 2.5k day one. DAY ONE.

Gone Home is well known, been available for some time and in sale for 5€. All time peak is slightly above 1k.

Sneaky SneKy was just released, indie roguelike and 5€. All time peak is 22 players.

Do you think the developers will care about your "message"?

Digital_CHE: I think that release a new game at full price during a big sale is a dirty move, typical of Valve.. I didn't expected this from Gog.
Uh, the release date is almost certainly set by the developer/publisher, not GOG (or Valve). It's not GOG's fault that 11 bit studios decided to release it on a week that GOG happened to have a sale going (I note that it was released today on Steam as well).

Matruchus: It has just been released on gog. Why should it be on sale?

And what's the alternative?
Not release the game at release date, because there's a sale on?
GOG can't control when the game got released on other platforms and to force people to buy on day one from inferior service just to avoid their sale wouldn't be a 'good move'.
GOG can't force the publisher to agree to put it on sale just to fit in with GOG's sale either. Valve would do that.

Releasing a game full price during a sale isn't a dirty move, it's just when the game happened to come out. Any alternative would be.
Y like the idea it looks a sad plataformer , so Deep history i never see something like this before in this genere
Why can't you guys released it sooner.\I bought the Steam edition already :(

Well, GOG did start advertising it on their main page two days ago, so it's not as if they stealth-released it...

I've been looking forward to This War Of Mine since I first heard about it. I love the concept of looking at the emotional and moral choices made by civilians during war - it'll be interesting to see if they can carry it off.

In general, I think games do a bad job of "emotional mechanics". The Sims is up to iteration #4, and the characters still display barely more real world emotions than a Tamagochi. And I really enjoy Zafehouse Diaries, but these people are surrounded by a serious zombie threat where larger numbers give you a much better chance of survival - their tendency to regularly break another survivor's limbs because they're prejudiced against that person's race, gender or background doesn't make me feel they're under stress; it makes me think they're psychotic nuts.

realkman666: I thought this one is getting fair pricing???

F4LL0UT: Some people don't seem to acknowledge the fair pricing package as fair. :p
That's because it is not. The end client DOES pay more and only get credit to buy in this specific store AND all this is done from gog's pocket, conclusion: not fair.

Uh, wasn't it released around the same time?

That's also a game that you play once and then I suspect you never touch again. If anyone watched a Let's Play of it, they'd have no need at all to play.

This one is like Zafehouse Diaries (rogue-like) but with really odd restrictions, like the fact that you can only loot one place a night and only send one person out to loot.

You'd think if your group of "survivors" were worth their salt they could multi-task better...

I'm on the "$20, are you out of your mind!?" boat as well...

Unfortunately they hid the price, so it was rather hard to see how overpriced the bloody thing would be unless you happened to think to put in on your Wish List and check the "soon" price there...

Unfortunate. I was looking forward to this but "fair" pricing means I will have to pass.

Price is okay.
Yep. Selling a brand new game for 20$ is quite normal, I'd say. The guys who made it want to get some money for their effort and investment. It's their job, not some hobby or charity work.

When I find the price of a game a little high, then I use the usual strategy : Wait 1 year, when it's not so much of a "brand new shiny" anymore. :)

Not sure the game is my stuff (I'm not into grimdark, desperate or depressing stuff for my gaming), but it sure looks interesting. Maybe I'll take it once my backlog is back under control (and when Valkyria Chronicle isn't eating up all of my gaming time anymore).

Actually I know about the game today after my friends told me about it. I played about 5 minutes and I got hooked.

I rushed back home and then went straight to GOG.com. I type into the seacrh engine and it shows me the game is not found. Therefore I went back to Steam to buy it.

I do not care if GOG.com charge a little bit extra because I love games that are DRM free (I am not saying they are but I am telling you if they did, I would be happy to fork over extra couple of bucks) It was several hours later I saw a person in Extra Credits post a link to buy this game at GOG.com and hence my comment before

I think GOG.com needs to fix thier search engine.

You're missing the point, he said that the game could sell like hot cupcakes if it as cheaper and that he would say "fuck you" to the developers if he ever see them online.

Well, the game is currently the 2nd top seller of Steam and the all time time peak now is almost 4k. Do you think the developers made a mistake? Do you think that they care about what entitled gamer will say to them online?
I'm on the "$20, are you out of your mind!?" boat as well...
And that's totally fine, i've always said "vote with your waller". I haven't bought the game because it's unfair that they have their game available on their website for 19$ and yet they use regional pricing on gog/steam.

But it's their decision and considering that the game is a sucess then their bet paid off, 20$/regional pricing worked for them, i won't act like a spoiled brat and go tell them "fuck you" but i can use other tools to manifest my opinion:

a) Buy from russian traders;
b) Wait for a price drop;
c) Never buy the game.

Or, let's be fair:

d) Actually buy it for 19€ (+fair price package) if the feedback for the game is really good.
