In war not everyone's a soldier

This War of Mine, a highly addictive survival game that challenges you to manage a group of civilians doing their best to live another day in the middle of a war-ruined city, is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux on GOG.com, for $19.99*.

They say that war never changes, I'm not so sure about that. One thing's certain, though - looking at the depiction of war in modern gaming it's safe to say that war games hardly change. Most of them presenting conflicts in a binary world, where it's easy to immediately tell the bad guys from the good guys, the oppressors from the freedom fighters, heroes from villains. Some titles try to present moral ambivalence, some do a pretty good job of it. But all the war games you'll come across have one thing in common. They're all stories of military struggle - be it on large scale or personal level. Stories of soldiers. Well, in war not everyone's a soldier.

This War of Mine lets the player experience the horror of war from a very different perspective. One that of a civilians, struggling day by day and night by night to find food, find shelter, keep themselves warm, keep themselves safe, keep themselves… sane. Survive. In any other game this last word would be soon followed by the cliché "at all cost". This game, however, is different. It dares to raise the question: what cost is too great to pay for your own survival? How much of your morality and humanity are you willing to gamble with in this game of russian roulette with just an off chance of a bullet missing from the gun's chamber. While the gameplay alone is nothing but addictive and fun, putting you in charge of a group of survivors trying to get by in a city ruined in a fictional - yet disturbingly realistic conflict, the tone of the game and the emotional mechanics affecting the characters leave no place for doubt: the experience of war leaves everyone involved scarred. The game, on the other hand, leaves you with a desire to play just one more round, get through another day, and another. And another.

Combining a captivating gameplay full of scavenging, exploration, micromanagement, and tough choices to make at every step, serious tone, and suggestive art style, This War of Mine is a thrilling work of modern gaming that manages deliver great fun back to back with a meaningful experience. Grab it now, for $19.99* on GOG.com.

xep624: BTW: Does anyone know in which European city was this trailer shot - is it Sarajevo or Warsaw or something else?
avatar
budejovice: I know it's not Sarajevo. No chance things have changed that much since I was there 15 years ago.

EDIT: And speaking of trailers filmed in cool looking cities, here's one filmed in mine. Release date unknown. :)

WOW!!!! That video is awesome - because of the hype around Witcher 3 I forgot about Cyberpunk 2077 - fantastic city you live in and it looks much bigger than Budejovice (I was in Slovakia and had that beer couple times - brings back lovely memories!).

But Budejovice is located in Czech Republic, in neighborhood with Slovakia - if that is where you had your beer :)

Oh.... Looks like I had too many beers back then.... And both countries are nice (I was in Prague in 1997) but it seems that Czech Republic is slightly better situated (economically). And I know that there are slight differences in languages, but both nations love beer like no one else around the world:)

xep624: Thanks fr your reply. I think it could be Warsaw then since 11bit Studios are located in Warsaw. I haven't seen the Warsaw downtown in last 12 years, so that could be why I couldn't recognize the city and yet somehow it looked familiar...

budejovice: I have never had the pleasure of visiting Poland. I look forward to seeing the cities... and climbing in the Tatras. :)

After looking for a few photos, it does look like Warsaw. Awesome skyline.
Climbing mountains is always lots of fun! And the view is always rewarding. Last year I went for Mount Bogong - the highest in Victoria, Australia and because it was sunny day you could see the peak of Mount Kosciuszko in New South Wales - the highest mountain in Australia (like 3 hours drive away). I never climbed Tatras mountains, I was once in Zakopane, but for climbing the peaks you will need a week or so and I guess late spring/ early summer is the best time to do it. Good luck with your climbing dreams and travels!

I don’t recognise those skyscrapers but I see Pałac Kultury i Nauki so it must be Warsaw. :)

Also those comments are interesting:

Digital_CHE: Why this game is not on the sale?
What's next? DRM?
They had it on pre-order sale. On their site only.

Matruchus: It has just been released on gog. Why should it be on sale?
I think that release a new game at full price during a big sale is a dirty move, typical of Valve.. I didn't expected this from Gog.

xep624: Maybe because when the game is new the developer wants to earn some money so they can pay their staff. Divinity Original Sin was released a few months ago and I doubt it will be on sale during XMas 2014... Plus honestly sometimes it's better to buy one game at full price than 10 cheap ones, because you won't have time to enjoy those 10 games...
Maybe for You.. Here in Argentina, the U$D is a very expensive currency... Thats why, If We want to purchase a game, We need to do it on a sale....

Note that GOG doesn't have a proper regional pricing like, for example, bigfishgames... Add that to the fact that in GOG we can not purchase credit (like on Steam, Gamersgate or Bigfishgames)
Thanks for releasing the game here :-). I was looking forwart for this for a while now.
$20US is not a bad price. I just am not sure if I want a new game I am uncertain about for that price.

I hope it gets a sale price of, say, $10us. I could open my wallet for that to try it and not feel like it was much lost if it turns out to be a bad game.

In Australia it's rather easy to get a job where they pay $20 per hour. However if you have mortgage (like I do) you pay a lot of money to the bank, as a small one bedroom apartment will cost you minimum $350 000 (in Melbourne and Sydney). I know that in Eastern Europe some jobs pay you $20 per day. The games I usually buy on sale I don't play because of the lack of time. However there will be XMas sale and I'm sure you will get some good games. And I respect you very much for the fact that you buy games instead of downloading torrents. I hope that soon the regional pricing will be abandoned and that games will have one flat global price.
This game looks REALLY good!

Been watching some demo LPs of this one. Early opinion seems to be pretty strong. Looks like a really good game... heavy with lots of emotional stuff, but good mechanics and story. I loved Zafehouse, so I'll probably grab this one.

Not to get too off topic, but 750K unemployed, 500K underemployed, and what was it, ~240K jobs? According to the official government statistics anyway. Being employed isn't quite as easy as you Liberal Party voters like to assume.

Unemployment has been a issue for a fair while now (look at all the call centre jobs shifted overseas in the last 12 months - telstra, optus just to name a few - plenty of call centre people out of work - some dodgy companies are actively offshoring their financial sections - *that* in itself is a bit of a worry security wise for customers). Lib govt isnt doing enough and making people work for the dole (fuck that , id rather study) compulsory isnt going to help.

anyway off topic. Someones put a review on gog already.. come on game only just got released...

Totally crazy indie pricing. They could sell this thing like hotcakes with the right price. But they want to be greedy, so screw them. Ill keep an eye out for 11 bit studios and give a big fuck you to the dev team when i see them online.
