In war not everyone's a soldier

This War of Mine, a highly addictive survival game that challenges you to manage a group of civilians doing their best to live another day in the middle of a war-ruined city, is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux on GOG.com, for $19.99*.

They say that war never changes, I'm not so sure about that. One thing's certain, though - looking at the depiction of war in modern gaming it's safe to say that war games hardly change. Most of them presenting conflicts in a binary world, where it's easy to immediately tell the bad guys from the good guys, the oppressors from the freedom fighters, heroes from villains. Some titles try to present moral ambivalence, some do a pretty good job of it. But all the war games you'll come across have one thing in common. They're all stories of military struggle - be it on large scale or personal level. Stories of soldiers. Well, in war not everyone's a soldier.

This War of Mine lets the player experience the horror of war from a very different perspective. One that of a civilians, struggling day by day and night by night to find food, find shelter, keep themselves warm, keep themselves safe, keep themselves… sane. Survive. In any other game this last word would be soon followed by the cliché "at all cost". This game, however, is different. It dares to raise the question: what cost is too great to pay for your own survival? How much of your morality and humanity are you willing to gamble with in this game of russian roulette with just an off chance of a bullet missing from the gun's chamber. While the gameplay alone is nothing but addictive and fun, putting you in charge of a group of survivors trying to get by in a city ruined in a fictional - yet disturbingly realistic conflict, the tone of the game and the emotional mechanics affecting the characters leave no place for doubt: the experience of war leaves everyone involved scarred. The game, on the other hand, leaves you with a desire to play just one more round, get through another day, and another. And another.

Combining a captivating gameplay full of scavenging, exploration, micromanagement, and tough choices to make at every step, serious tone, and suggestive art style, This War of Mine is a thrilling work of modern gaming that manages deliver great fun back to back with a meaningful experience. Grab it now, for $19.99* on GOG.com.

Tpiom: But... but I thought gog was against releasing games during (big) sales.
Nope. The Last Federation DLC just got released as well with no hype. And Redshirt on a previous sale.

Cyraxpt: Wait, what? The developers can erase reviews? REALLY? I thought they only controlled the forum for the game, not the reviews, wtf is Valve thinking?
avatar
Matruchus: They can do that for years already on Steam. Didn't you know that. The worst offender was developer of Stardrive who deleted hundreds of negative threads. A I see you misunderstood - I meant negative reviews in the forums not on the gamepage.
They really shouldn't be allowed do that.Period.

Why this game is not on the sale?
What's next? DRM?

Ah, ok, my bad, didn't notice the "forum", my brain stopped after review and went full berserker! :)
it was instabuy for me... gameplay looks great, but there are some strange solutions in options menu, like e.g. changing resolution is done by slider from 50% to 100%, no fullscreen/window button etc.. WTF is this???
Hope devs will bring usual video settings in the patch soon...

edit: on stream I saw normal video menu and normal resolution settings - so it looks like that strange menu is only in mac version

It has just been released on gog. Why should it be on sale?

Ha! Well, I thought the same but we have 2014 now and the amount of games released for PC is just ridiculous.... But then again this game look so good (graphics, animation) and has awesome trailer and it would be a shame to wait with release for a few more days. I don't know why but I truly crave for games that deal with mature subjects and have gritty setting/mood (The Cat Lady is awesome btw). Plus this game is not going to take away from hundred of hours....
Looks great!

Maybe because when the game is new the developer wants to earn some money so they can pay their staff. Divinity Original Sin was released a few months ago and I doubt it will be on sale during XMas 2014... Plus honestly sometimes it's better to buy one game at full price than 10 cheap ones, because you won't have time to enjoy those 10 games...

Funnily enough, Ascendant (which was one of the flash sales), was released just one day after the beginning of the Spring Insomnia.
Two great trailers are missing on game page...
BTW: Does anyone know in which European city was this trailer shot - is it Sarajevo or Warsaw or something else?

I know it's not Sarajevo. No chance things have changed that much since I was there 15 years ago.

EDIT: And speaking of trailers filmed in cool looking cities, here's one filmed in mine. Release date unknown. :)

Thanks fr your reply. I think it could be Warsaw then since 11bit Studios are located in Warsaw. I haven't seen the Warsaw downtown in last 12 years, so that could be why I couldn't recognize the city and yet somehow it looked familiar...

I have never had the pleasure of visiting Poland. I look forward to seeing the cities... and climbing in the Tatras. :)

After looking for a few photos, it does look like Warsaw. Awesome skyline.
