In war not everyone's a soldier

This War of Mine, a highly addictive survival game that challenges you to manage a group of civilians doing their best to live another day in the middle of a war-ruined city, is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux on GOG.com, for $19.99*.

They say that war never changes, I'm not so sure about that. One thing's certain, though - looking at the depiction of war in modern gaming it's safe to say that war games hardly change. Most of them presenting conflicts in a binary world, where it's easy to immediately tell the bad guys from the good guys, the oppressors from the freedom fighters, heroes from villains. Some titles try to present moral ambivalence, some do a pretty good job of it. But all the war games you'll come across have one thing in common. They're all stories of military struggle - be it on large scale or personal level. Stories of soldiers. Well, in war not everyone's a soldier.

This War of Mine lets the player experience the horror of war from a very different perspective. One that of a civilians, struggling day by day and night by night to find food, find shelter, keep themselves warm, keep themselves safe, keep themselves… sane. Survive. In any other game this last word would be soon followed by the cliché "at all cost". This game, however, is different. It dares to raise the question: what cost is too great to pay for your own survival? How much of your morality and humanity are you willing to gamble with in this game of russian roulette with just an off chance of a bullet missing from the gun's chamber. While the gameplay alone is nothing but addictive and fun, putting you in charge of a group of survivors trying to get by in a city ruined in a fictional - yet disturbingly realistic conflict, the tone of the game and the emotional mechanics affecting the characters leave no place for doubt: the experience of war leaves everyone involved scarred. The game, on the other hand, leaves you with a desire to play just one more round, get through another day, and another. And another.

Combining a captivating gameplay full of scavenging, exploration, micromanagement, and tough choices to make at every step, serious tone, and suggestive art style, This War of Mine is a thrilling work of modern gaming that manages deliver great fun back to back with a meaningful experience. Grab it now, for $19.99* on GOG.com.

I have had the chance to play 30+ minutes of the game's early release, and watch several hours of "let's plays".

I can safely say this game is not one I am going to go out of my way to purchase.

Do not get me wrong it is an interesting concept, but once I saw and played it. It turns out to have some of the worst part of sand box/crafting games. You will likely not have the item you need to finish a life saving item or the correct one to trade the wandering item dealer.

But, if you liked zafehouse, then you may like this, it has some of the same character driven plot and actions. Some of the character can carry more items, so better plunder. A few are better at talking and dealing with others, these are your deal makers. Lastly you are survivors in an active war zone, some one has to be the suito-protector(not a warrior), so they need a weapon.

So in my option the purchase of the game comes down to do you like character management games. 11 bit studios, made this a game of semi-reality, you need food and water that get rarer as you go unless you have the right thing or know the right people.

Example, to get the water for soup, one of the base meals you need a rain catcher with a filter, the filter is a part you have to craft over and over again: So to just not stave or not die of dehydration you have to re-craft the same part repeatedly. Not my favorite thing to do, because it makes me feel I am not making progress in a game world.

If, those are thing you can stand or even like then I say, buy the game, due to it doing the story well, and you are not stuck with your 3 original random survivors, because raids and other people looking to live will come to your base/home, looking to hurt or help you respectively.

P1na: Survival... 20$... mid of a massive sale...

I hope the release goes better for them than what I'm thinking right now.
Yup. Best of luck to them with that choice.

I'm also unimpressed that the (barely reduced) pre-order was only available on one site.

Also, you can only scavenge in one location a night with only one person. (This with a change of more people joining your group and making you require more supplies... *facepalms*)

Oh, and one of the Dev pre-release information interviews/vids states that they're not passing judgement on the players... and yet your characters can commit suicide after falling into a deep depression when they kill someone?

Yeah... I'll be sticking to Zafehouse Diaries for the foreseeable future.

Quite hard for a game like this to be released within such an incredibly bombastic Sale---Well, I will go for it later on...

realkman666: I thought this one is getting fair pricing???

F4LL0UT: Some people don't seem to acknowledge the fair pricing package as fair. :p
Goddammit, are you serious? -___-

It does also not help that the developer is erasing negative reviews in the steam forums. Mostly people who can't get the game running.
Looks nice. If word of mouth is anything - seemingly mostly positive might be worth getting. Only thing is pricing for me...over $20AUD...
But... but I thought gog was against releasing games during (big) sales.

Wait, what? The developers can erase reviews? REALLY? I thought they only controlled the forum for the game, not the reviews, wtf is Valve thinking?

And seems to have to repeat it in every thread :~(

They can do that for years already on Steam. Didn't you know that. The worst offender was developer of Stardrive who deleted hundreds of negative threads. A I see you misunderstood - I meant negative reviews in the forums not on the gamepage.

I once hired a gypsy to read Gabe Newell's mind. All she picked up was:
"Cha-ching, cha-ching, cha-ching, cha-ching, food, cha-ching, cha-ching, cha-ching, cha-ching..."
She also saw plush headcrabs stuffed with dollar bills.

Nah, but seriously, developers have a disturbing amount of power over the community stuff there. It's insane.

Anyway, nice year for Polish indies. First Ethan Carter, now This War of Mine. Two of the most interesting releases this year coming from my hometown. I'm happy.
