It's a human ant colony!

The Settlers 4: Gold Edition, a charming civilization-building strategy classic true to its roots and full of micro-managing goodness, is available on GOG.com for only $9.99.

Looking at an anthill one can't help to admire the excellent workflow managment the little insects so effortlessly achieve. Something that's entirely out of reach for any human corporation, community, nor army comes absolutely natural to them. Every ant seems to know its exact place in the big scheme and in any given moment it does exactly what it's supposed to be doing. Now imagine, that it's not an anthill you're looking at, but a human settlement, and it's not the insect hive mind in control but you. Kind of makes you drunk with power, right? Well snap out of it, cause the ominous Dark Tribe is coming to obliterate everything that's good in your realm and it's up to you to lead the Romans, Mayans, Vikings, and Trojans in the struggle against the invader.

The Settlers 4: Gold Edition is everything you would expect from a Settlers game and more! The brilliant mechanics of managing and expanding your settlements by the hands of little virtual villagers are still there, as enjoyable as ever. This time, however, the game comes with a number of useful tweaks such as a seamless zoom feature giving you better overview of your realm. This installment offers higher resolution support so that game can be more detailed than ever. The Gold Edition comes with two expansions: The Trojans and the Elixir of Power, adding another playable nation and its campaign, and a Mission CD with a great selection of scenarios and a random map generator. With this edition, there can be no end to your fun with your tiny obedient subjects.

If you like the Settlers series you simply can't miss this title. If you're not familiar with it, The Settlers 4: Gold Edition is a perfect entry point to the Settlers universe, available for only $9.99 on GOG.com.
Ok I have a question that needs answering before I even consider buying this.

Does the multiplayer actually work over LAN without any issues?

This game had a tendency over LAN to not update and De-synch during multiplayer and cut off even after playing it in LAN mode over an hour. This made one player drop out of the game and pretty much end the game there. It kind of ruined the experience when playing, because if you spent a lot of time building and such, for the game to drop out in the middle of it was very disappointing.

So any big diffrence between this and the Third game?
Not bad. Still want to see the very first Settlers though.
I love that series!

Hah, yes it is... :-)

On the game page overview, it says "Just because of a little uprising, Morbus has been banished to earth by HIM, the highest god of all." Lacking a capital E on "earth".

Tranquil.Suit: You could say that S4 is the last real Settlers game.

hedwards: That's good to know, I have S5, and you're correct in implying that it's not a real Settlers game. If S4 can be made to run on Linux, I'll probably pick up a copy when it goes on sale.
I played through Settlers 6 (Rise of an empire) and loved it. It sure is different from the original formula in many ways (having played only Settlers 2 before, using the knights for the first time felt very different), but the fun factor is there. It plays right.

I hated Settlers 7 (Paths to a kingdom) though.

Not a speculation, a confirmation. Moment to dig it up.

keeveek: They did it again? Why on earth Settlers games have expansions only in foreign languages...
Foreign language? Blue Byte is (was) a German game studio, so the original and native language is indeed, German.

So I should ask the question to GOG.com: They did it again? They released a settler game without the original German language? *sigh* Nevermind, I was never a big fan of Settlers …
Looks nice but I wait for Settlers 1.

The reason why GOG wouldn't release a German only game is rather obvious.
Another really good release on GOG. Too bad I'm broke after all those sales lately :)
While I love the Settler's series, the whole resource distribution process always seemed to vex me at every corner. I wish they would make it a bit more user friendly. Nice release!

I still have the original on 3,5" diskettes. Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't the original game entitled "Serf city: Life is feudal?" I believe it was originally published by the long dead SSI. <sniff>

Congratulations to GOG for releasing their 600(-13)th game.

It's a special occasion. Throw a party.
This looks great.
