Micromanagement heaven!

The Settlers 3: Ultimate Collection, an all-time favorite civilization-building strategy bundled with the Quest of Amazons and Mission CD add-ons, is available on GOG.com, for only $9.99

Only a true regent will recognize this sound. It's a little like the ticking of a clockwork mechanism, with all the cogs and sprockets placed carefully, but firmly, in their places. Or like the humming of the bees, flying about in a seemingly chaotic manner but unified by a common purpose ever-present in their hive-mind. There's also a hint of children's laughter and a distant sound of farm animals. A distinctive note of golden coins jingling against each other in the treasury. Finally, an ominous, almost inaudible distant uproar of armed men gathering near the borders. All this, in a perfect unison, is the sound of a living kingdom, and can only be heard from the top of the highest tower of the royal castle. You know this sound quite well, don't you?

In The Settlers 3: Ultimate Collection your goal is to lead a nation to power and glory and your work begins at the very basics. There are many factors and details you need to take into account while you try to establish a working economy and provide your tiny subjects with a superb infrastructure that will allow the state to flourish. The third installment of this cult series no longer requires you to build roads and gives you direct control over your military units. This makes the gameplay a little bit different, but just one look at your tiny loyal settlers going about their tasks and building all those nice little structures will make you feel right at home. The Ultimate Collection comes with the Quest of the Amazons expansion and the Mission CD add-on.

Become the regent supreme and indulge in all the joys of royal micromanagment in The Settlers 3: Ultimate Collection, for only $9.99 on GOG.com.
Hmm, I don't know how I feel about this. I loved the Settlers 1+2 and got this for a christmas present.
Never liked it that much, it was the point at which I stopped following the series closely, and I think the last one I played. I never liked that you had direct control over you soldiers in this, it felt liked shoehorning an RTS into the game to me. But I haven't played this since 1999, and I would give it a try if it were on German on GOG. I play almost all games in English, but I want to play german games in German. Oh and play give us german versions of the previous Settler games and Battle Isle while you're at it ;)

P1na: Target market be damned, when the OV is the one you originally played you'll certainly miss it if you can not get it on the re-release. OV is superior 95% of the time, and if you couple that to the nostalgia factor it's unbeatable.
This.
You couldn't pay me to play Little Big Adventure autrement qu'en Français. Und Gothic würde ich nicht auf Englisch spielen.

Moreover, for games with voice-overs... subtitles were invented for a fucking reason. And the text-only X-Com : Enemy Unknown was offered in half a dozen languages by default, to name only one instance.

htown1980: please talk about how great LucasArts games are next Wednesday...
I too have money waiting for day one LucasArts releases, but we all know it will be Microsoft games coming here next as they try to re-establish a friendly connection with the gaming market they know they have alienated and otherwise will soon loose to the competition.

When we all go to Linux (already working on), Mac or 'outdated' MS products they need us as friends. It is us who buy new computers with their broken OS. Businesses tend to keep with Win XP and 2008, so they need us for their bottom line, we do not need them. So I think MS is the next one of the big 5, yay for Hover!

True, but just as we gamers do look more on games rather than OS-es these games were made for, I´d vote for LucasArts :)

ZivilSword: But anyway, as GOG published the English version only, it doesn’t really matter (and I’m not interested in buying this for such a thoroughly German game in gamestyle and humor) …
Is there even any text in the game? I only played 1 and 2, but 1 had no text or voice at all, so why does it matter?
Finally! Also, one step closer to 6 and 7. ;)

Hm I think there is at least text, and for a 1998 game, there will be probalby some voice acting or unit selection samples. It’s not that I cannot understand an English game, but it just doesn’t feel right to offer an original German game only in its translated English version. Even more because it is no adventure or so with difficult localization – just an economy RTS, some texts and some voice samples I presume, the translation work is nothing and they could just offer Settlers in two or more languages.

You may say, it’s the publisher’s decision, but Ubisoft also offers Beyond Good and Evil here with full EFGIS localization, and that was much more work for sure.

Ah, hell. I bit just because I was quite curious to see how much different it is to the second game. Never played this one before.

Aside from that god-awful intro resembling a really bad early 90s cartoon, I'm liking the changes quite a lot so far:
-no roads, stockpiling resources at the production site, and direct transport of resources from the closest source makes ferrying around goods a lot less tedious
-being able to set work areas for the likes of woodcutter, farmer, etc. works beautifully, especially when you don't have to worry about roads cutting into the latter's fields
-on that note: being able to combine two farmers' fields into one bigger patch is great
-having more direct control over what's exactly produced weapons/tool-wise (not just setting a vague priority) is very nice.
-being able to lead a skirmish directly into enemy territory without having to border your opponent's land makes fighting easier as well as more fun

That said, I've only just played through the tutorial and the first Roman mission, but at this rate it looks like this may easily replace Settlers 2 as my favorite in the franchise. I sure like the greater freedom the game gives me. While I definitely haven't seen everything the game has to offer yet, I'd be surprised if I was going to change my opinion on it.

The fact that the game comes with so many missions and an RMG on top of that should definitely leave no one wanting.

Yay, Settlers 7 would be something. I won’t buy it until I can confirm not to get a version that needs online connection or any kind of DRM (in context of the current SimCity 5 desaster …)

They recently disabled that persistent connection requirement. S7 was the game that introduced it, and the last game to have it disabled, it still requires theUPlay activation thing. I don't like my games leased nor connected to some extra service, so yeah, i'm also waiting... patiently. ;)
For the topic... Although a good game, this is not as good as Settlers 2 for me, so no wishlist this time.

Tarhiel: [Cut my rant]
True, but just as we gamers do look more on games rather than OS-es these games were made for, I´d vote for LucasArts :)
I know gamers just want the games to work and are more interested in a good game then the OS that run it. I would love it if Take-Two and/or LucasArts brought their games here, also Microsoft will be good with their back catalog.

The thing is I know more people have been playing and testing out Linux after the announcement by Steam, and even Mac OS to see how they feel, as people appear to be unhappy with the drastic changes of Win8 to make PC's into tablets.
It is unfortunate for MS, but you are right, people just want the OS to work in the background and let them choose what to do. Gamers tend to fall into this category as do office workers as they have better things to do with their time then spend ten minuets trying to just get to their activities.
Win8 seems to annoy people both home users and professionals, just look over YouTube for rants. I have no personal experience with it beyond a quick play and I found it had a learning curve I was uninterested in going through (like a bad game), so I just installed Ubuntu on the machine. The world is changing as we speak, and Microsoft know they no longer hold the home market so tightly, maybe they will begin listening before they do their very own Gorge Lucas tribute of annoying the people giving them money.

Alfie3000: Technical Question: Does the music loop?
I'll answer my own question:

NO!

http://www.gog.com/forum/the_settlers_series/settlers_3_music_stops_playing_after_one_track

It's an old issue with the game. Uses an outdated way of cueing the tracks so it won't loop anymore.

Shame that. I'll keep using my discs for now.
Nice release.

And to 4, which IMO was inferior but had the nice decorations.
I like to see Settlers saga on GOG.
