amok: besides online two-player? (original only had split-screen). Not really. There have been done some tweaks and optimisations to the economy system. Some say it is slightly easier now, I say it is more playable. But the changes are not to noticeable, to be honest.However, it just runs much smoother and faster, and I also found it more stable, last time I tried. The maps are also different.

The new graphical engine is the main selling point, but I think it is well worth it - it is an improvement. This is a much better version then original Settlers II.

benjiir: Hmm shame it wasn't an upgrade like the Stronghold titles for instance. But Bluebyte and GOG need to make money too. I'll not complain, but doubt I'll buy this version. I like S2 as it is, although the multiplayer could be fun.

Gonna put on my contemplating cap =)
They did not want to change anything except the graphics and only necessary tweaks. They were worried about doing anything which would change the game. This is settlers 2. Not remake. For that I am thankful.

I love this game, I loved the original and I love the remake.

Own them retail so little reason to buy here...

I too wish that they would have translated the Vikings expansion into english, that would have made this pack an auto-buy for me, since ive wanted to play it (properly, in actual 100% english) for a long time now...

Its not like it is unheard of for them, as far as I am aware there was no english retail version of the Knights and Merchants expansion until GOG.


Edit: and yes I do know of the aforemeantioned mod/patch to get vikings expansion working

Yes, this is Settlers II, but IMO much more playable. When you try this version, you just don't want to go back to the original.

I always felt like I was playing a twisted version of "AOE: The Smurfs" whenever I played this. Of course, I only ever played the demo. I'm sure the full game doesn't look quite so silly. :P

I know this was talked about above already but I still have a question about The Settlers II Gold Edition vs this new one.

It looks like the Gold Edition added some content and features to the original Settlers II, judging by the little described in the Gamespot review I was just looking at. I've had The Settlers II Gold Edition on my wish list for a long time now but hadn't gotten it yet.

Should I now just forget about the Gold Edition and get this one instead? Would I be missing anything by doing that? Thanks.

If you had not played s2 before tenth edition is for you.

Gold edition is just an extra map-pack, or two extra campaigns, added to the main game.

The maps between Settlers II Gold and Settlers II 10'th Ann. are different anyway, but yes, the inclusion of the extra maps/campaigns do make the Settlers II gold a little longer. However - both has the sandbox mode, so it all depends...

I would recommend getting this version first anyway - it is just better balanced and more playable.

and what about the multiplayer feature? Is it playable? I mean, I hope it does not need any Ubisoft server or something like this, right?

I like Settlers 2 too much and I want to try this. I never played it and I think it is a good reason to do it now :)
