Hawk52: What I love about Arcen is that in a gaming world where so many companies are afraid to try new things, or break new ground, Arcen gets an idea for a game and then they make that game. It doesn't matter how different the game is or what idea it is. Arcen doesn't make traditional games even when they tackle established genres. There's always something new, off, different about the games. Sure the games maybe could often be more polished or sometimes the design doesn't work 100%, and I'm not saying in anyway that I like every game they've made, but damned if I don't appreciate the effort and creativity they put into their games.

On Last Federation, I've only played for a couple minutes but it's definitely an interesting thing. Again, it's different and maybe that difference will work for some and won't work for others. But I'm pretty intrigued by the options, the lore, and how the games play out each time.

My first game I died because I assumed my ship was uber and challenged the Bolutus leader to a duel. I put up a decent fight but he smoked me in the end. And just like that, the game was over. Now I know next time don't do that.
The same thing happened to me. Tried to attack the ships in the begining instead off docking and the AI destroyed me :) - twice actually. Its possible to beat them but you really need to pull enemy ships away one by one and destroy them.

The game looks very interesting, does anyone know if there are already "bigger" tests and/or videos out there?

graspee: Since you seem to be here though looks like they didn't need to. I don't think it's fair to the other stores really.
A tad late, but do you feel the same when devs/ pubs put GOG last in line, either for new releases or updates?

There's only one star system, and every (non-destroyed) planet starts out already inhabited?
And somehow one of these other species, with no space travel ability, managed to blow up your entire home planet?
And you don't even get your own native ship -- you start out by stealing one of their prototypes (after crashlanding and apparently giving them your tech and then sitting on your ass doing nothing for years on end)?
And even though you're a giant monster you fit just fine in their prototype and have no problem operating the controls?
And even though your planet is blown up and at the start there is only one space-faring race, they've already gone through the trouble and expense of putting "space blockades" over other planets?

I've watched the first couple of let's play videos by Pewpewchewchew, but still can't tell whether or not I'd like the gameplay. Hopefully they gave the gameplay more consideration than they did the story line. I'll wait until better videos are up. (Pewpewchewchew's video kind of blunders around the game, so may not show it in the best light.)

The first GOG review starts out "If you've ever wanted to play inside a 4X universe", to which my answer would be "hell yes!". But then I look at the actual game and just get disappointed after reading that review. This game isn't a "4x universe" -- there's no universe - only one system, there's no exploration - all planets are populated and known to you (and in fact your planet used to rule them all), there's no expansion, so far I haven't seen any resources to exploit unless you count the civilizations themselves (and only if by "exploit" one means "provide them with technological advances"), and apparently rather than exterminate the main object is federation building -- so there's basically no 'x's and no universe in this alleged "4x universe". (I think Smugglers V is probably a good bit closer to what this reviewer claims Last Federation to be -- which reminds me that I've got that game but haven't gotten around to playing it yet.)

From the review: "If you've ever wanted to play inside a 4X universe, but instead of managing an empire, you get to be the shadowy figure running rampant [...]"

That second half of the sentence was very important. You're not an empire doing the classic 4X, you're the puppet-master manipulating all the other races that do it. The main goal may be to unite the races into a federation, but not every races has to live to see that day. Also, at first it might seems very limited to play in a single solar system, but in this case there's a LOT going on and you won't run out of things to do anytime soon.

I highly recommend you check out some other videos to see what the game really has to offer. It might not be the game for you, but it would be a shame to miss it if it is.

I understood the 2nd half. I didn't quote the whole thing, but "running rampant" as an individual in a 4x universe was what appealed to me when I read the review. The thing is, you don't get to do that -- there is no 4x universe.

And I don't think your assertion about those other races is right -- they're not in a 4x universe either. Take eXploration for instance -- one of them managed to blow up your whole planet. You think they don't know about the other planets in the system already? You think they're going to need to do a whole lot of exploring? I don't think so. (Even if they didn't have the information, you could just visit them and give them a map -- exploration done.)

Anyways, the dev's page says they'll have a demo "soon". Maybe I'll try that when it's available. (Kind of dumb not to have the demo ready at launch, because launch is when you have gamers' eyeballs and there's a good chance I'll just forget about this game before the demo shows up. First time I see it again may be when it gets a 50% off sale here on GOG.)

Well, that could be said of just about any game. I can only try so many of them (and for the past few weeks if not months that number has been 0 -- if I quit my day job to do full-time RPG development though, that would free up my weekends for some gaming, but for now I'll be getting back to trying to figure out why ntdll!LdrInitializeThunk is corrupting the heap when it tries to load the .exe my compiler generated).
@TheJadedOne: it's not exactly 4X, it's a different type of strategy game. From what I understand, the game involves being a central force in shaping relations, by any means necessary, between different parties; there's no exploration, but there certainly seems to be exploitation, expansion, and extermination. At any rate, this seems like a really cool game because of the central figure gameplay thingy. But yeah, I'd love to check out a demo, too.

I think he already watched those.
Nice looking release, wishlisted for the time being...
I'm absolutely in love with this game. There's so many systems, so much to do. It's not like any game I've ever played before and I've played a lot of 4x games.

That being said, I ran into a pretty nasty bug, or what I assume to be a bug. When I reloaded my normal save from last night, my shields and hull health had dropped significantly. That made the early encounters even harder then they were previously.

If that isn't a bug, it's certainly a weird feature. The game is already difficult to understand and get going without the game neutering you when you reload.
