Lurking at the Threshold.

The Last Door: Collector's Edition, an atmospheric horror adventure game presenting a chilling story worthy of H.P. Lovecraft, 8-bit (ish) graphical style, and sensational audio tracks, is available for Windows and Mac OS X on GOG.com for $9.99.

Feel what it's truly like to be alone in the dark with this low-res, high-suspense point-and-click horror adventure, winner of multiple Best Games of the Year awards. Set in Victorian England, when Jeremiah Devitt receives a letter from his old schoolmate Anthony Beechworth with a hidden, cryptic message, he knows something is wrong. His journey to an abandoned manor is only the beginning as he starts to remember a long-buried secret from his youth, discovering things man was not meant to know, and opening doors that should have remained closed…

The Last Door: Collector's Edition contains all four terrifying episodes (complete first season) of The Last Door, a game of occult and otherworldly horror. Featuring new scenes and puzzles, enhanced graphics, unlockable bonuses, and remastered sound. Explore ancient manors, decaying tenements, and twisting underground warrens with little but a lamp and magnifying glass to guide you.

Will you dare to open The Last Door: Collector's Edition and throw yourself head-first into the pixelated world of horrors originating beyond time and space, for $9.99 on GOG.com?

Smannesman: Well one of the most heard of complaints for adventure games is the 'pixel hunting'.. that's not so much of a problem with this one.
avatar
Nicole28: Haha, totally yeah!

Erich_Zann: What ? Was Crysis your first game ?
avatar
Nicole28: Certainly not. I do think the style has it's charm, which Wadjet's Eye modern adventure iterations does well. And graphics are a partial back-burner, to what I'd consider a fantastic game in my books. But seriously, for this, I'm hoping they aren't making you hunt for a coin on these grounds .

However, it doesn't mean that The Last Door is bad in any way!
No, the graphic never interfere with the gameplay, you won't need to buy new glasses :)

Johnmourby: But yeah The more I think about it the more I like these graphics. Lovecraft's prose while verbose and overblown is quite minimalistic in his own way. Only ever telling you the things you need to know at quite vaguely at that (But still overblown),
Yeah, I guess that a stylistically faithful adapttion of Lovecraft would have these graphics, PLUS a series of arrows pointing at them with labels such as "hideous", "truly horrible" and "in fact very scary you know".

It's the reason why Lovecraft doesn't transcribe well to the big screen, The more precise the image, the more awkward and funny the result. His descriptions shouldn't be processed too much. It's not a universe for visual media.

I don't think that the choice of awful pixelisation is so terribly dishonest, here...

I really have to object here. There are the Darkness Within games ("In Pursuit of Loath Nolder" and "The Dark Lineage") that were Lovecraftian to the core and functioned very well as games, at least in my opinion (and I know I'm not the only one to think so).

I strongly advise all who have not done so already to play these two wonderful games.

A gold coin would definitely stand out, as a yellow pixel, on such a screen. A worn leather pouch, on the other hand...
Looks like my kind of pixel art horror game.. Half price and I will get it! :)
The game card claims "The Collector's Edition features exclusive new locations, scenes, puzzles, stories, and more." Is there referring to the 5th episode, or have episodes 1-4 been improved/tweaked versus the flash version?

The latter, they apparently had to rework and update the earlier chapters quite a bit to combine them into one game.
The next, 5th episode will be the opener to Season 2.
How does the first review even make sense?

The three stars are not for the game quality, but a half indication that you can play it for free.
There comes a point when 'retro graphics' is just a cover for 'lazy art design'.
Regarding pixel graphics, it seems like a contradiction for there to be an atmospheric horror adventure game (especialy one "Lovecraft inspired") with "scary details" that is composed of "lazy art." I haven't played it yet, but the focus seems to be on discovery and uncovering story details... which would require great attention to structure and visual elements (even if they are pixel). I suspect people should give the game a playthrough before taking a gut reaction of criticising the artwork. It's sort of a shame people rush to poop on developer's stuff based on some screenshot especially when there is a readily available free edition.

I'm excited to try The Last Door.

I do wonder what GOG is pulling here though, and hope it's not a precedent. I don't mind paying for shareware or freeware if that software would be unplayable on modern systems if not for some tweaking by GOG or whoever sells it through them, but today's release doesn't excite me in the least. They already did something similar with Race the Sun, which I bought before knowing you could play it for free online, and was a bit annoyed to find that out.

At the very least they should be clear (precise, meaning no marketing) as to what exactly it is that's offered extra in comparison to the free version(s).
Played the first episode:

- no pixel hunting so far
- everything is pretty much telegraphed
- great atmosphere by ways of moody light and a score that is nice and chilly

So far I like it a lot more than "Shadow of the comet", the only other lovecraftian point-and-click adventure I have played.

About the price-tag etc.
I don't know. GoG sell games, so they don't exactly tell you that you can play this game elsewhere for free, because... they want to SELL it. I find it hard to blame them for the omission.. I mean the description DOES go on about the extra content etc.
Jeez, it´s only 10 bucks anyway...

Great, looked like a really odd "Collector's Edition" without it ;-)
Plus, one less new release to add to our long-long list of Missing Soundtracks.

Cheers!
Sounds great to me, will be getting this soon I suspect. Thanks GOG!
