Puts the “fun” into “funtasy adventure game”!

[url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/the_book_of_unwritten_tales]The Book of Unwritten Tales, a wonderful and incredibly well-written point-and-click adventure game that spoofs almost every existing fantasy cliche, is now available on GOG.com 10% off for limited time. That’s only $17.99 until Tuesday, August 7 at 09:00 AM GMT.

The creators of The Book of Unwritten Tales are that masters of one very difficult but highly-valued genre of humor: parody. The game light-heartedly spoofs countless fantasy universes, drawing from books, movies, and games (although it focuses most of its punches on a certain popular MMORPG;)). Some of the characters are well aware of their predicament of being a part of a computer game, so expect the fourth wall to be shattered into small pieces before you reach the ending credits.

In The Book of Unwritten Tales you control the cast of unlikely (but very much likeable!) heroes using a classic point-and-click interface. They visit countless puzzle-packed locations--each beautifully presented in lush 3D graphics--that combine into a large and detailed gameworld. The adventure consists of five lengthy chapters interpersed with many top-notch cinematics, so the game guarantees hours of story-driven fun that will leave you craving for more.

The Book of Unwritten Tales--a splendid adventure with great voice-acting and heaps of witty punchlines will have you laughing out loud like a gleeful goblin for only $17.99 for the next 7 days.

G-Doc: Hey, look! A developer graced our humble forums. Quick, my goglings! Unleash the question-storm! ;-)

(Hopefully he'll return and answer at least some of them.)

ThomNG: I will probably let the mummy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUOIHRf8PII) answer your questions - hope you have enough patience. :P
In the meantime... does the game have (English) subtitles for the dialogs? I usually prefer enabling subtitles so that I don't have to crank up the volume too much to hear every word, and many times I understand written English better, especially if there is some heavy accent or a bit less familiar words used. This goes also to movies.

With the GOG Sam & Max games, the first thing for me was to find out how to enable the subtitles, and then watch the intro again, with the subtitles. Too bad in Sam&Max games you apparently have to set them up separately for each episode...

Great to see you again, Mortimer .. oh sorry ... subtitles are instantly enabled. However you can also disable them if you want.

tburger: Guess at some point I'll pick it - but for now I'll stick to oldies.
Should've been: "Guess at some point I'll click it".

Sorry.. =)
Hey, cool, I was just looking at this on Amazon. Not gonna buy immediately, but wishlisted.

Ok thanks. I presumed it has subtitles, but just wanted to make sure because I don't think I saw them in the youtube videos you provided. Or then I wasn't paying enough attention.

I really don't want to nitpick, but isn't Nordic the publisher? And not even the original publisher, I might add.
I usually would consider $20 much too expensive for a downloadable game as well (even a AAA title that has just been released), but that's usually when considering the DRM. I must say that I find the price totally okay for a DRM-free version, considering that the game is still relatively new. Yes, you can get it for cheaper in a boxed copy here in the German-speaking area, but probably not in foreign markets who would have to import it... not 100% fair, but on the other hand, usually it's the other way around and it's us who have to pay sometimes up to double the price that our US or UK friends have to pay for the exact same thing... =)

Ultimately though the lack of the German language is a dealbreaker for me as well. I can't imagine that GOG.com has less weight in these negotiations than dotEmu or GamersGate... and even if they'd have to pay for the extra languages (which they probably would, since it means content from more people and companies that need to be compensated), I can't see it being a bad business decision judging by how many people seem to miss the choice.

Bloodygoodgames: BTW, if you do want to see what the game is all about (and it does get excellent reviews), there's a downloadable demo at the developers website here:

My bad. Still - there's a good chance he'll offer some interesting facts :-)

Looks nice.

I noticed that the release date on the game card is "July 31, 2012", but this came out a few years ago...
It's not the Digital Deluxe Edition . :(

Not includes:

Making Of Booklet
Soundtrack (all mp3)
Making Of A Character Video
Ha ha, the first screenshot is a typical GOG highlight :) and I will admit that it made me want to get the game more.

So far what I've seen and read about this game gives me the impression that it is one that I will like a lot. A better follow up to Simon the Sorcerer than all the sequels it had? Of course I'm not expecting voice acting as great in that game, but if the voice acting is good that will be just fine since so many computer games that are fully voiced have rather mediocre or lousy acting.

I like what I've seen of the graphics too. I have some minor gripes like that in some scenes they try to use "every" colour in the spectrum and that the colours are way too saturated, especially in the forest scenes, but this is something you see in many games today and it is not as bad here as in some other games since there is more variation. The character design seem more like nice rather than awesome but this is not so important.

I like that the graphics have their own style. Most newer games look far too similar for my taste but this world do look interesting to explore. While unmistakably a 3d game, I can see the influences of old adventure games and book illustrations on the design and that is appreciated! There is a lot f attention t detail here, very good!

On the whole the graphics look great to me.

The description on the game page where it mentions fourth wall breaking and World of Warcraft parody did not make the game sound very attractive but I think this is much more similar to Simon the Sorcerer than all those awful fantasy-parody games the sell on Steam. I do not expect Germans to be as funny as Brits, but then again,I could be surprised.

I hope GOG get the Discworld games too. Just imagine what a great weekend promo they could make with those, this and Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2!
I was going to say this:
"To those that think this game is too expensive, what do you want? Should it be half the length of what it is? This is a new game after all."

But then I see that this game was made in 2009. Hmm, time sure do fly! Still I think 20 bucks are not expensive for a game that is 2-3 years old. I will admit that I'm a bit of a hypocrite on this since I will probably wait for a promo to buy this too. I just have so many other games that I have not played yet so buying it now does not seem like a rational thing to do. Unless I get the irrational urge to play just this particular game of course.
Wishlisted - game looks really great. I had not heard of it.
