This is what an actual saga looks like.

The Banner Saga, a unique Viking-themed role-playing game with solid tactical combat mechanics, beautiful 2D graphics that look nothing like any other modern title, and a captivating heart-touching story, is now available 10% off DRM-Free on GOG.com, for Windows and Mac OS X. That's only $22.49 for the first week.

The Banner Saga invites you to live through an epic role-playing Viking saga where your strategic choices directly affect your personal journey. Make allies as you travel with your caravan across this stunning yet harsh landscape. Carefully choose those who will help fight a new threat that jeopardizes an entire civilization. Every decision you make in travel, conversation and combat has a meaningful effect on the outcome as your story unfolds. Not everyone will survive, but they will be remembered. The game offers you with a variety of over 25 playable characters from 2 different races, human and varl, the horned giants, and your choices in combat will have consequences for all whomever you choose to lead into battle. With the beautifully hand drawn combat sequences and animations, accompanied by an evocative score from Grammy-nominated composer Austin Wintory, the game will immerse you into a fantasy realm inspired by Norse mythology. Make sure to pick this one up, as there are very few modern games as original and engrossing as this one.

Embark on one of the most awe-inspiring journeys that modern gaming has to offer, and take a plunge into the beautiful snowy landscape of The Banner Saga, for only $22.49 on GOG.com. The 10% off release discount offer lasts until Tuesday, February 12, at 10:59AM GMT.
The game's wonderful, though a slow burner.

At first the panning of void text got to me and I was frustrated, but after a while the world and the journey really pulled me in. The characters and the different variable happenings and choices really make the game worthwhile story-wise. Plus, it's one of the best turn-based strategy games I've ever played, in game-play.

Of course the strong points are the soundtrack and the art. But you mustn't overlook the characters and the overall gameplay. From half game onwards I felt the game was a surefire favorite. The automatic saving system helps, as I actually wasn't trying to reload "bad" decisions this way. Really smart way of implementing it. (only other good game that did an autosave well was EYE - Divine Cybermancy, for me... Shadowrun was pretty much always disappointing in that regard and much inferior to the Saga).
Glad to see the game is finally here, it deserves all the attention it can get ^^

Crosmando: Does this use Unity?

Niggles: Why do so many indie games use unity? Only cause its free?.
Well the pro version isn't free and I assume that allows making commercially licenced games. It only costs 1500$ thought compared to most engines going from 100,000$ to millions of $.

Why use it?
* It's cheap
* It's extendable to meet most needs
* It's widely used and tested
* It offers great portability (All major PC and phone operating systems)
* No need to reinvent the wheel (game engine, scripting engine, renderer etc.) means faster and cheaper development cycle

As for Banner Saga, at least the game wiki page states the engine is custom and I could not find any mention of Unity in anything related to the game.

Ah! There was a rumor floating around here on GOG of an employee annoying the staff (except for Judas) for playing this song on a continuous loop. I suspect that was you. No wonder you are excited with this release!

:D

gog.com - I come for the games, I stay for the fancy vocabulary!

At least I already knew what Gehenna means. Thanks, Chris Carter!
All I really know about Banner Saga is the whole delay for a DRM-less version.

Someone sell this to me. If I liked the tactics in Blackguards, will I like this/what would you compare it to?
This is great!

Ill have to play it to get my own impression, but looks like most are impressed with the artwork in particular & the music. The story apparently is ok, some have said the combat is a bit grindy.....
