Christ, if you'd suggested to me about two years ago that System Shock 2 would ever get out of rights/lawyer hell, I would have laughed until I cried. And yet here we are.
from my understanding you can thank EA for never bothering to renew their trademarks and copyrights to their share of System shock 2 which allowed Star and Meadowbrook insurance to swoop in a nab it themselves, thus making them according to a attorney representing them full owners of the game. This of course is based on a web article Time magazine posted about the return of SS2.

So it was probley just a matter of working a deal with Star and Meadowbroke to be able to sell the game digitally. I could be wrong since I'm basing this on the word of the rep from S&M and the trademark registration they filed last year.

But I thought it, tragically WASN'T a smash hit and was cruely overlooked on first realese, which is why Looking Glass went to the wall, why the licensing is in such a mess and why so many people want it now becuase they are all face-palming at having missed it and want to rectify that, unlike other huge games like Doom and Quake that arn't here but no-one's that fussed about because they already have 12 copies each!

Unless you mean that it's ABOUT to be a smash hit for GOG with this re-release, which is an absolute certainty, yes!
YES!
yeah it tanked in sales but it wasn't what did Looking Glass in that was Thief 2, yeah Thief 2 killed Looking Glass you see they ended up banking on the sales from Thief 2 to keep them going sadly the residuals from the sales took much longer then expected and they were broke or so the story goes.
Thanks GOG.com & Night Dive, it's great to finally see this here :)

It's also a very nice surprise to see the soundtrack provided in FLAC format - is there any chance we can get the soundtracks for other games in FLAC format too please?

Dammit, I have a date today... :(
Yup, this works flawlessly out of the box in WINE on my Mac. Even this old GMA 950 MacBook running Snow Leopard. Awesome.
I'm not gonna make it easy for you guys.. or rather for your servers. Bought it on the spot and will immediately download XD

FAButzke: "Kick: Bioshock was definitely more approachable for console gamers, and I think if they had made the game as challenging as System Shock it would have alienated that market. It’s difficult to keep everyone happy these days when the success of a game is determined by units sold or a Metacritic score. Ultimately, I hope that introducing SS2 to new gamers will inspire them to expect more from their gaming experiences."
actually, this is quite strange - I'm quite old so my gaming skills aren't what they used to be, but SS2 is easier for me than Bioshock... probably because the enemies were a lot slower in SS2. so basically my hand is just slow and clumsy, but I have no problems with my brain :D

Huh, fascinating. I guess EA's laziness is not entirely detrimental to gamers, then! :P
Bought instantly, of course. I must admit, I never thought this day would come. They just don't make 'em like this anymore.
Finally.

Nice work, GOG. Nice work.
