A power too great for mortals to harness, a quest too great to pass upon.

Summoner, a brilliant console-style RPG that starts small and unfolds into an amazingly complex and exciting experience that just keeps on giving, is available 20% off on GOG.com. That's only $4.79 for the first week.

Summoners have toppled empires and challenged gods. They are venerated as saviours and feared as destroyers. With rings crafted by the ancient Khosani, the gifted can call forth demons, dragons, and elementals, but only the strongest can control the forces they unleash. Born with the mark of the Summoner, Joseph possesses a power greater than emperors and gods. As a child, he summoned a demon to save his village, and watched in horror as those he loved were destroyed. Nine years later, the armies of Orenia invade, and Joseph must confront the prophecy he was born to fulfill.

In Summoner, you traverse a beautiful, completely original world spanning two continents. You'll summon up to 16 different creatures, such as minotaurs, golems, dragons, and try to control them in combat. You'll be casting spectacular spells and wield an extensive arsenal of weapons and armor. With the large gameworld to explore, memorable NPCs to meet and befriend, an interesting combat system that adds some extra fun and strategy into battles, and--most importantly--a great story to tell, this 2000 classic game feels a lot like a great jRPGs, but comes in its own anime&grind-free flavor.

Fulfill the prophecy, reach for the ultimate power, and take a shot at vanquishing evil before you become a part of it in Summoner, for only $4.79 on GOG.com. The 20% off special release discount offer lasts until Tuesday, March 4, at 10:59AM GMT.
Looks great, hmmmm. How do the parties work in this one, are they easily manageable? Can you solo?
The only review up right now is actually a really thorough one from a reliable source, reaver. Thanks to him.

final_option: I'm quite sure that the DRM wasn't patched out of TQ Gold, as it still want's to have the CD while playing. (Exception is one of the Fanpatches that came with a No_CD .exe).
Ok, thanks. Well GG apparently talked them out of DRM, so I imagine GOG can too. As far as DRM goes, that shouldn't be a sticking point getting that game here.

So we meet again. Summoner was included with my Radeon 9800 (along with Comanche 4). Wasn't much of a fan of this kind of RPG back then so I gave up rather quickly and never gave it another try (also I have no idea where I put the CDs). Will probably give it another try soon thanks to this GOG release.
As on ArcaniA: let's say it is a hard fight with GOG on some of the older titles especially on some niche ones (and also their current prices) but you will see a release this week of a back cat franchise on which a previous part is already online on GOG (it is not ArcaniA) - so at least there are some positive developments on that point :) Still hoping for ArcaniA so that I will be able to convince GOG to take it somewhere in future :)

PS: ArcaniA would be DRM free, yes - that is not the discussion point ;)

RS1978: No, Arcania was never a steamworks title. And according to our appreciated ThomNG, Nordic Games offered Arcania a couple of times to GOG, but they rejected it. Hear ye, GOG? Here's a potential Arcania buyer!

gandalf.nho: Hum, I asked because at the release I remember other stores saying about Steam being necessary
Perhaps other stores did sell only a Steam key? At least in Germany the retail versions were available without Steam, only with online activation which was patched out by a honest JoWooD employee when JoWooD was bankrupt. The Steam version doesn't support any Steamworks features like Achievements, Cloud save or similar. You had to activate Steam version on release with a 3rd party DRM as well.

Easily manageable is relative. It is best if you pick one character to control - set the standard behavior patterns for the others and only jump between them if you want a specific action (backstab, spell, etc.) executed.

You are only really in control of the character you have in focus - can only do the attack chaining I have described in my other post with that character.

As far as solo is concerned - you can disable the option that the other characters follow the one you currently control. So you could leave them standing at the start of each area, but I don't know how viable that is in terms of difficulty and such. And I don't know if you have to get them if you want to leave the area.

This + enigmatic hint = The Guild 2 confirmed ;)

This is very good to hear, I hope, with the new regional pricing system it will be a lot easier for you to come to an agreement. Arcania may not be a real Gothic experience and its addon may be a little bit short, but I've bought both on Steam for full price and enjoyed them very much and would be happy to see them here on GOG. :)

And please: If you bring them, bring them with German language support (voice over was very good), and as well Titan Quest and - pretty pleaaaase - the german versions of your wonderful Spellforce franchise. :)

Damn, I was hoping for Titan Quest but you're certainly right. Not my cup of tea then but it's good to see GOG's catalogue of classics further growing. :)

Thank you, you guys rock! I hope one day it will be possible for Red Faction: Guerrillas to get a DRM-free release, I think that one will be a tough cookie due to GFWL, though.

This is a nice release, but I take it this isn't the one that was hinted at?

And what's the third game that's here today, the catalog says 703 games now?
avatar
JohnnyDollar: Yeah, including Titan Quest Gold and Supreme Commander Gold. And Cold War, and Darksiders, and...

RS1978: ...Arcania. ;)
I liked Arcania.

:P

I can imagine GOG having a hard time reaching an agreement with publishers considering their prices and policies. It has its pluses and apparently a few minuses from an end user perspective :P Thank you for sharing the info.

And thanks to the Nordic Games Team for bringing your games here, as well as you coming here and interacting with us on the GOG forums. :)

In theory it can also be a Painkiller or Panzer Elite Action one ;) However you will see soon.
