A power too great for mortals to harness, a quest too great to pass upon.

Summoner, a brilliant console-style RPG that starts small and unfolds into an amazingly complex and exciting experience that just keeps on giving, is available 20% off on GOG.com. That's only $4.79 for the first week.

Summoners have toppled empires and challenged gods. They are venerated as saviours and feared as destroyers. With rings crafted by the ancient Khosani, the gifted can call forth demons, dragons, and elementals, but only the strongest can control the forces they unleash. Born with the mark of the Summoner, Joseph possesses a power greater than emperors and gods. As a child, he summoned a demon to save his village, and watched in horror as those he loved were destroyed. Nine years later, the armies of Orenia invade, and Joseph must confront the prophecy he was born to fulfill.

In Summoner, you traverse a beautiful, completely original world spanning two continents. You'll summon up to 16 different creatures, such as minotaurs, golems, dragons, and try to control them in combat. You'll be casting spectacular spells and wield an extensive arsenal of weapons and armor. With the large gameworld to explore, memorable NPCs to meet and befriend, an interesting combat system that adds some extra fun and strategy into battles, and--most importantly--a great story to tell, this 2000 classic game feels a lot like a great jRPGs, but comes in its own anime&grind-free flavor.

Fulfill the prophecy, reach for the ultimate power, and take a shot at vanquishing evil before you become a part of it in Summoner, for only $4.79 on GOG.com. The 20% off special release discount offer lasts until Tuesday, March 4, at 10:59AM GMT.

missgamer: Nice, I loved his game back on the ps2, any chance of us getting Summoner 2 as well?
I'd love to see Summoner 2 here, but from what I've been hearing there was never a PC release of it, just console.

That's correct :) Interesting sequel but completely different than its predecessor :)

Exactly. I've made that point in posts as well. It really seems like its own game, just put under the Summoner brand.

I really enjoy the diversity of things you get to do in the game. Such as the parts where citizens come to you with problems and you make judgements, which have real consequences.

True Summoner Fans try to not talk about the second Summoner game. ;)

(though in its defence it was nothing like as bad as the second Jade Cocoon game! :( )

I'm exempt then because I'm technically a Summoner 2 fan. :)

However, I did just buy Summoner on here, even though I still have it on CD. So I'm not exactly antithetical to the first game either.

J_Darnley: Is this the same "Summoner" that was on the PS2 with a sequel?
It's very similar. I originally played the PS2 version years and years ago and then I played the PC version for a little while right after and then I just played the PC version again about a year ago.

What I remember is that there are a few differences in locales. And load times are way shorter on PC (obviously with new tech running it).

Summer came with a multiplayer option and if I remember correctly, it's not going through the game co-op. But I think it had co-op-like things.

Also, combat works a bit differently. Summoner's combat is very, very similar to The Witcher (the first Witcher). The PS2 version had different buttons to press at different times to do chains, which was actually a little harder than Witcher-style clicking a button when a cursor changes.

I hope that helps.

Overall, it's a pretty decent game. if you're a die-hard RPG fan, it's great. I had fun with it, but it's nowhere near a great game.

I just pulled it out a year or two from my brother's attic. We had it on CD ages ago for the multiplayer, but it was crap.

The cover art was done by Kieth Parkinson (Everquest cover and lots of a Shannara books). It was an awesome box.

Many images (and interesting bio): http://wallpaperweb.org/wallpaper/fantasy/keith-parkinson.html

P.S. The image that GOG uses is from PS2. I don't know if they couldn't get the rights for the PC version cover. It was way better.

Thanks for the detailed answer. I've played The Witcher and liked it. I've also played a little of my bother's PS2 copy of Summoner 2 and thought it good. So I'll keep this game and your post in mind for when I'm next looking for an RPG to buy.

Who has the rights to Summoner 2/all Summoner franchise? My question is: would any of them be willing to port the PS2 version to the PC and sell it here?

Well, I know Nordic Games has the rights to the first game because umm well we released it here under their name but this could be just limited to distribution rights but, then again, I really have no idea :/

JudasIscariot:
Is there anyway to ask anyone? Having the full series here would be super cool. I never had the time to do any of the Search for Games Rights thread, but it's a shame that they never brought the PS2 version to PC (maybe Summoner on PC originally didn't perform well? so maybe sales now could nudge someone in the right direction?)
About summoner 2, any chances it can be emulated with pcsx2? Anyone tried that? Their compatibility list lists it as green, meaning playable. This potentially covers the gog team at some level i guess, haha :P

http://pcsx2.net/compatibility-list.html (need to type it in the search box on the left)

The legal gymnastics tho... getting the rights to a console game and selling it as a PC with the ps2 emulator... :)

I don't get the hate for Summoner 2, it was at least as good as the first one, if not better imo (I only played the PS version although I have the original disc PC version as well).

I don't get it either, I personally enjoyed Summoner 2 more then the original.
Any idea how to alt-tab in Summoner? It gets really angry and doesn't like Ctrl-Alt-Delete to circumvent it.

One of my dreams is that one day GOG will branch out into the console market in some form. Well emulated console games on PC would be utterly fantastic! Old Spryo and Medieval and Crash and more ^
