Like to get medieval on your foes? Now you can do it in HD!

Stronghold HD and Stronghold Crusader HD, two memorable medieval RTS games simulating pre-firearm warfare, newly upgraded with High Definition graphics, are now available on GOG.com, 20% off! That's only $4.79 for Stronghold HD and $7.99 for Stronghold Crusader HD, until Thursday, November 7, at 10:59 AM GMT.

Stronghold, a 2001 real time strategy game, with managerial and simulation elements, was welcomed enthusiastically both by the gamers and the media. It presented an opportunity to become a medieval warlord in charge of a small army, a piece of land, and high ambitions. Up to this day, the game supports quite a large community of fans creating new maps and modifications, that boost the playtime indefinitely. Stronghold Crusader graced the PCs of strategy fans in 2002. It took the multi-layered gameplay of its predecessor and placed it in the setting of the Middle East in the time of Crusades. With great range of things the player had to take care of--including establishing a sustainable economy, erecting a keep and defending it from enemy raids, and finally conquering neighbouring estates--both games presented a worthwhile challenge to strategy fans.

Stronghold HD and Stronghold Crusader HD are the High Definition editions of these two "castle sim" classics. Adjusted to modern displays they allow for much better control of the playfield and deliver awe-inspiring view of life-like medieval landscape. The HD versions will replace the classic editions (Stronghold Crusader HD is also upgraded to the "Extreme" version) and if you already own one or both of them, you now get a free update! If, for whatever reason, you prefer the classic Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader, you can still download them from your shelf. If you didn't have the pleasure to get acquainted with the series, you have no more excuse not to do so, as we offer you each game with a 20% discount!

Did you ever wanted to be adressed as "Sire"? Here's your chance to become a medieval lord! Grab Stronghold HD for only $4.79 and Stronghold Crusader HD for only $7.99.

Before you rush off to get those strategy classics, or if you're already back after buying them, take a moment to listen to the games' developer!

SovietSharkey: If only it was released on Steam also today
Or I wasn't tempted by the fairly cheap pack with 2 and Legends
From the Patch site:

"We're currently in talks with Steam about adding the HD versions and updating the Stronghold Collection versions of the games. We just need to wait for Steam to give us the green light and we will be sure to let you all know when they do. "

So I wouldn't expect it to be released till they get that done.
HD and Crusader Extreme updates for free, and optional too! A great gift. Thanks to GOG and Firefly Studios!
I would think that the Stronghold games would benefit from a larger resolution, especially for those who have large monitors.

I have got to get around to playing these games because they seem like they would be right up my alley.

For anyone who is still on the fence I will post a motivating link to a real crusader song with lyrics. First in old French and then in English translation:

Chevalier, mult estes guariz
"Knights, salvation is guaranteed"

Chevalier, mult estes guariz,
Quant Deu a vus fait sa clamur
Des Turs e des Amoraviz
Ki li unt fait tels deshenors;
Cher a tort unt cez fieuz saiziz;
Bien en devums aveir dolur,
Cher la fud Deu primes servi
E reconuu pur segnuur.

Ki ore irat od Loovis,
Ja mar d'enfern avrat pou-ur,
Char s'alme en iert en pareis,
Od les angles nostre Seg-nor

Pris est Rohais, ben le savez,
Dunt crestiens sunt esmaiez,
Les mustiers ars e desertez:
Deus n'i est mais sacrifiez.
Chivalers, cher vus purpensez,
Vus ki d'armes estes preisez;
A celui voz cors presentez
Ki pur vus fut en cruiz drecez.

Ki ore irat od Loovis,
Ja mar d'enfern avrat pou-ur,
Char s'alme en iert en pareis,
Od les angles nostre Seg-nor

Alurn conquere Moïsès,
Ki gist el munt de Sinaï;
A Saragins nel laisum mais,
Ne la verge duot il partid
La Roge mer tut ad uo fais,
Quant le grant pople le seguit;
E Pharaon revint après:
11 e li suon furent perit.

Ki ore irat od Loovis,
Ja mar d'enfern avrat pou-ur,
Char s'alme en iert en pareis,
Od les angles nostre Seg-nor

In English:

Salvation, good knights, you are assured,
since thanks to you the Almoravids and Turks
will answer to God in battle,
whom they have greatly offended
by wrongfully seizing His lands.
We have good cause to be dismayed,
for there it was that God was served
and first avowed as Lord.

He who goes with Louis
need have no fear of hell,
For his soul will be in Paradise,
With our Lord's angels.

Edessa has fallen, as well you know,
which grieves all Christians to the core;
our churches are burned and ruined,
and God's Mass is said no more.
Good knights, consider this:
you, who are skilled in the use of arms,
offer your bodies and your lives
to Him who for your sake was crucified!

He who goes with Louis
need have no fear of hell,
For his soul will be in Paradise,
With our Lord's angels.

Let us go and reclaim Moses
who camped on Mount Sinai;
Let Saracen hands not grasp the rod
that smote and parted the Red Sea's waves,
as he led his people clean away.
Pursuing them, the Pharaoh and his host
all perished in a watery grave.

He who goes with Louis
need have no fear of hell,
For his soul will be in Paradise,
With our Lord's angels.

I'm not amused by the new installer. The old one worked perfectly in Wine, but this new one throws an Access Violation error about some gdiplus.dll

Running Winetricks gdiplus gets the installer running again, but it would be nice of the developers if they could do something to get rid of that dependency so I don't need to run that winetrick for each wrapper (I'm using Wineskin on Mac OS X). I tried Wine 1.4.1 and Crossover 11.2 and they both gave the same error.

GOG.com: ...and if you already own one or both of them, you now get a free update!
This.

This is why I love GOG! Taking care of the folks who already purchased the game.... in this modern era of poor customer service and nickel and diming the consumer GOG is setting a great example of how to do business while treating their customers like real people.

Long live GOG.
Free for the users who own it already...? This is amazing!
An interesting idea as well. I approve!
This indeed was a nice surprise. Stronghold is a great game.

Fred_DM: i find it startling that people don't realise that EVERYBODY who already owns the standard edition of these games gets the HD upgrade for free. this doesn't have anything to do with GOG. it's a free service provided by Firefly themselves.
You see the same thing happen with DRM-free. A game gets released on GOG and you get scores of people praising GOG for it being available DRM free now, even in cases where the game was already available DRM-free long before it came here.

Can't really blame people for not being aware of it I imagine, but it does look a bit silly to those that know better :)

(I'm sure I'm among the people on the ignorant side plenty of times xD)

Sargon: Besides, it isn't free for GOG to devote manpower to update their releases and post a news item about it. GOG is different from the other digital game stores that I know of in that they care about things like this and I think they deserve credit for it.
*facepalm* it's a free patch ffs. i think that's the least you can expect from a digital distributor.

If you expect too much of people you will just get bitter and grumpy, then again some people like being bitter and grumpy so who I'm I to tell them what to do.

Why could't firefly sell the game apart from the SD version?
Thank goodness for this, I looked into this on WSGF a while ago because SH and Crusader would be great to play in widescreen resolution, but apparently the resolution settings for the game were built into the source-code of the game, so no easy config text files (cfg, ini) in the directory to edit, as well as no way to even hex-edit the executable (as the resolution was written into the code, and not in the exe).

Awesome stuff
Can i play Stronghold in 1366x768 ?
Or is this resolution not supported ?

With this new update that won't be a problem. Works like a charm on my lappie, which has exactly the same resolution. ;)
This rocks! Thanks a lot to both GOG and the developer for making the upgrade free on my Stronghold Crusader owned on GOG. I've been meaning to pick up the original Stronghold as well for some time. Looks like now is the time!
