Like to get medieval on your foes? Now you can do it in HD!

Stronghold HD and Stronghold Crusader HD, two memorable medieval RTS games simulating pre-firearm warfare, newly upgraded with High Definition graphics, are now available on GOG.com, 20% off! That's only $4.79 for Stronghold HD and $7.99 for Stronghold Crusader HD, until Thursday, November 7, at 10:59 AM GMT.

Stronghold, a 2001 real time strategy game, with managerial and simulation elements, was welcomed enthusiastically both by the gamers and the media. It presented an opportunity to become a medieval warlord in charge of a small army, a piece of land, and high ambitions. Up to this day, the game supports quite a large community of fans creating new maps and modifications, that boost the playtime indefinitely. Stronghold Crusader graced the PCs of strategy fans in 2002. It took the multi-layered gameplay of its predecessor and placed it in the setting of the Middle East in the time of Crusades. With great range of things the player had to take care of--including establishing a sustainable economy, erecting a keep and defending it from enemy raids, and finally conquering neighbouring estates--both games presented a worthwhile challenge to strategy fans.

Stronghold HD and Stronghold Crusader HD are the High Definition editions of these two "castle sim" classics. Adjusted to modern displays they allow for much better control of the playfield and deliver awe-inspiring view of life-like medieval landscape. The HD versions will replace the classic editions (Stronghold Crusader HD is also upgraded to the "Extreme" version) and if you already own one or both of them, you now get a free update! If, for whatever reason, you prefer the classic Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader, you can still download them from your shelf. If you didn't have the pleasure to get acquainted with the series, you have no more excuse not to do so, as we offer you each game with a 20% discount!

Did you ever wanted to be adressed as "Sire"? Here's your chance to become a medieval lord! Grab Stronghold HD for only $4.79 and Stronghold Crusader HD for only $7.99.

Before you rush off to get those strategy classics, or if you're already back after buying them, take a moment to listen to the games' developer!
This is why I love you folks a GOG.com. Release an updated version of a game I have and I get the game without having to buy it again.

Just for that, I'm picking up a couple of titles from my wish list this week.

Thank you.

Roman5: other people might disagree with me on this one but...

I always start from the first game in the series, I would advise you to do the same
Exactly as Roman5 said; that should go for every series of games.
Thanks GOG and especially to FireFly Studios for releasing the HD patches to everyone who already owns the game.

Glad I can patch my physical copies, too! :D

cpc464: I haven't bought any new releases on gog lately but why did they change the default path for games.

why wont it let me install to C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Stronghold HD

it complains about characters ( ) .

Seems like a weird thing to change can use C:\progra~2\GOG.com\Stronghold HD to get past the () but I'd have to create a symbolic link to get past the . i guess.

Its not really much to complain about but I prefer it to all be in one place: )
Some games cannot install in folders with special characters (like DK2 for example) so they just applied it to the installer.

That, and it's generally not recommended to install in Program Files, so it's good they fixed that :P

Hm thanks guys. I tend to go for the first one in a series too but here I wasn't sure. But I shall go buy the first one right away :D
Thank you GOG for the free upgrade! This is a very nice surprise!

jimbob0i0: hmm that's odd - my shelf didn't have an 'updated games' flag on it ...

JudasIscariot: We got you a nice, descriptive news post about the upgrade instead :D
Not good enough. If I'm on a month's vacation, I shouldn't have to go through all the news posts to find out which of my 400+ games have been updated. Furthermore, some news updates disappear from the home page after some time.

For example, how am I to know that Divine Divinity and Beyond Divinity have been updated recently? I did not receive an updated games flag about it and the Divinity Promo news post is no longer on the home page.
Awesome. I still have mine on disc, but the HD version is tempting.

Ooh, didn't see this before!

edit: what, no Stronghold Legends? :-)

There are exceptions. I'd always recommend starting with HOMM3 over 1 or 2. I'd also recommend Worms 2 (or preferably Armageddon or World Party) over 1 (or United). In the M&M series, I'd discourage people from started with 1 or even 2 and going with 3 first (if not 4 & 5/World Of Xeen). While still good, many people might also question whether newcomers should start with the first games in some of the Sierra adventure games, KQ 1's interface could discourage many a newcomer from trying the sequels, whereupon they could miss the brilliance that is KQ 6. And who wouldn't recommend Duke Nukem 3D over starting with the first two platformers?

Then play it? :)

The HD version is a patch released for everyone that owns the game, not some special separate version that you would have had to buy but are getting for free ,which a lot of people here seem to think given all the praise GOG is getting for simply keeping the game up-to-date.

Edit: Nvm, seems you found it already :)

Whoa, a free upgrade, and it doesn't even "overwrite" the legacy version? Awesome! Thanks, GOG!
Thank you for not removing the non-HD versions!

Which one will be more to your liking depends on what you prefer.
Stronghold has a campaign and a free build mode (where you can even invoke invading armies fully configured by yourself).
Stronghold Crusader is a pure skirmish game: even its "campaign" mode is a series of skirmish battles without story.
So is the Stronghold HD version HD only? My screen resolution is 1280x800 and I can't see most of the game screen because the game starts in some higher res than mine.
Can I change it somehow or should I return to the classic edition?

Edit: Nevermind. It turns out the game started in 1280x720 which my screen doesn't like, but I managed to position my mouse on the options menu and get it down to 1024x768.

I understand what you are saying but I suppose it's in my "Completionist" nature to do this, I'm sure many people share this view as well

And besides, if you play the first Duke Nukem games first, you know why Duke 3D starts off with "Damn, those alien bastards are gonna pay for shooting up my ride" ;)
