OddDreams101: Anyone know how to fix the wacky color bug? Compatibility mode didn't help any nor did running in 256 colors, and I can't seem to find the .ini files
Which Windows version are you using and which game do you mean in particular? Frankly I'm not having the color bug.

Anyway, a good start should be this:
Outside of a mission (like during a cutscene or at the base) press Escape. The options menu opens, select "Flight Options". The entry to the top is for selecting the screen resolution. Select a resolution that says "hardware". With this selected you at least shouldn't have any wacky colors during missions.

PatTheMav: but from your post it seems that it's just the old floppy version with the floppy variants of the expansions.
Yeah, it's what the guys over at the X-Wing sub forums said. I thought that they just couldn't tell the versions apart but it seems that they were right. It's just the floppy version with addons. An indicator for this is also the amount of "top ace" profiles you start with. CD-ROM version has only one for me, GOG version starts with two. But the most obvious difference is the lack of voice overs during briefings.

Also IIRC floppy version of X-Wing has permadeath and your profile becomes inaccessible after you die while in the CD-ROM version you get a message that says "pilot restored" or something without any penalty. Tie-Fighter IIRC never had permadeath (but I'm not sure, I've mostly played the Collector's CD-ROMs).

I'm running Windows 7 trying to run the Special Editions of both games (bug is present in both).

I'll see if switching the rez helps, but it makes it nearly impossible to see anything on the menus in TIE, and X Wing isn't much better.

There's a rather universal fix for issues like these (you can read about it here). I created some registry files so you don't have to go through the whole process yourself:
LINK

Just run the corresponding registry files (depending on whether your Windows is 32 or 64 bit). Running the wrong one won't do any harm, though, just add a tiny bit of unnecessary data to the registry. Anyway, that's a common fix for older games suffering from screwed up colors on Windows 7, it *might* help. Chances are, though, that GOG already did the same thing and the fix just doesn't work on your system for some reason. Please report whether the fix worked.

Btw, if you feel uneasy about running registry files from somewhere on the web you can open them with a text editor and see for yourself that they only add the stuff that was also mentioned in the thread I linked to.

So I've been meaning to get a good joystick for a long time and now with these games out is a good enough time.

Can I get some suggestions for joysticks people use? I'm not looking for an expensive one but I do have some cash to drop, say 40-50 pounds.

I can only tell you to STAY AWAY from the Speedlink Wasp² and Gembird JSK420. Especially the latter (which I bought just a week or two ago) was an utter waste of money. Its huge deadzone and crappy sensitivity curve makes it pretty much useless for anything.

I've been told that the Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X Joystick is great, though. It's the next one I'm going to buy and it's perfectly within your price range. Apparently you can even detach the thrust thingy if you don't need it and want to save some space.

Another vote for the Mac version...played the heck out of these games when it came in a box set with Fate of Atlantis, Sam & Max Hit the Road, Day of the Tentacle, Rebel Assault II...I wonder what else was in that set I don't remember.
Straw Poll time! Which of the 2 games do you prefer, X-Wing or Tie Fighter? Do you side with the Rebel Alliance, or the Evil Empire? Vote now!

Installed new ATI drivers myself - fixed the crazy colors.

Can't get the mouse to work though... constantly moving down and right (x-wing '93).

Will I get that same experiacne with these older games?

Cool, looks good and has some good reviews. Thanks for the feedback!

I prefer the empire because they are all about maintaining peace and order. The rebels are just an evil violent bunch. We gave them universal health care, they didn't want to pay the taxes and now they attack the authorities. Plus, the emperor is the rightful ruler of the galaxy! The senate actually elected him, dammit! Friggin' rebel scum...

Try opening dosbox_xwing.conf in the game's folder and setting "josticktype" to "none". Maybe the game is constantly registering some sort of joystick input for some reason.
