Shadow of Chernobyl + Clear Sky + Call of Pripyat up to 70% off!

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat, the phenomenally immersive FPS survival horror series set in the terrifyingly believable radioactive "Zone" surrounding the explosion site of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, is available up to 70% off on GOG.com. That's only $14.97 for the set of three for the next 72 hours.

Not many people truly understand what it means to be a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. We're Scavengers, Trespassers, Adventurers, Loners, Killers, Explorers, and Robbers. Basically, what each of us is, is a bit of a soldier, a bit of a thief, a bit of a hunter, a bit of a nutjob, and a full-time basterd. Imagine what's happening in our heads. The Zone is calling for us ahead, new locations and unknown threats, spatial holes and monsters hiding in the fog, pitch-black nights and saving rays of a rising sun. You try to avoid anomalies and hide from blowouts, discover the Zone and collect artifacts, cure radioactive irradiation and fight for any stalker faction you like! This is the life, right? If only it didn't end so promptly, ever so often.

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Series delivers one of the most immersive and enthralling experiences in the history of first-person shooters. Calling it a "shooter", however, might be a bit of a stretch. The games' focus leans mostly towards exploration and stealth. In most cases, it's best to avoid encounters rather than face the dangers head-on. The Chernobyl exclusion zone is full of things that could kill you in an eyeblink. Strange creatures, physics-defying phenomena, not to mention the other men bold or insane enough to venture into the heart of eastern-european Twilight Zone. The competition is ruthless, as the prizes are great--the fascinating artifacts found in the forbidden land yield unbelievable prizes on the black market. If you think you have what it takes to become one of the fabled S.T.A.L.K.E.R.s, the whole story of the Chernobyl Zone opens before you: the original Shadow of Chernobyl, the prequel Clear Sky, and the sequel Call of Pripyat. All three games come with high-quality soundtracks encoded in lossless FLAC format.

For the next 72 hours, that is until Sunday, February 9, at 10:59 GMT, you can get the entire S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Series 70% off, that is for only $14.97. Separately, the games come with 50% off discount for that time.

EDIT:
Now, that the release special offer has expired, the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games are priced at $19.99, $9.99, and $19.99 for Shadow of Chernobyl, Clear Sky, and Call of Pripyat respectively. A permanent 20% off series discount still applies, if you get all three at the same time.

Thespian*: For me, the Stalker film was too slow (even for a Russian film), but I endured it looking forward to the ending, at least. So, when I learned about it...
It is a long and at times laconic journey, typically of the Russian and French films of the period. I find that it makes me think more during these sequences, contemplating the characters and their own inner processes. The film is in some ways passive in order to make you active in response. Naturally this doesn't always succeed in films, and I find I have to be in a receptive mood for it to work on me.

But coming back to the ending, yes, it didn't quite equal the book's for me either. As I say, it is consistent and authentic within his reinterpretation of the story, but doesn't carry the same bite.

Thespian*: About the American Solaris, I had read Lem's book (as most of his other works) years before. I consider this movie one of the worst adaptations I've ever suffered. I can't judge about the Russian version, as I haven't watched it. ;)
I read Solaris and The Cyberiad back in college, but didn't see Tarkovsky's Solaris until much later. You may or may not enjoy it, it is visually an even bigger departure from the source than Stalker. But the story is very true to the book, and retains its impact. Just don't go expecting all the fantastical organic manifestations of the planet to appear.

I am basing my opinion of the American version of Solaris on reviews and other comments, because I refuse to see it myself. But I understand the ending butchered the story utterly, much in the same way the execrable adaptation of I Am Legend did.
Outstanding releases ! First, Banner Saga and now this trilogy..

MoP: This game is one of the rare examples of a great idea and execution of a localisation over here. Instead of dubbing each character, they left the original voices and used a professional movie voice-over artist (lektor) like in most local TV stations. Gave the game a quite unique, "old movie" feel, really added to the experience from what little I'd played.
Too bad this version isn't available here, cdp.pl has only Clear Sky right now, hopefully they'll get the rest of the series.
A thousand times this - polish localization of Stalker games was unique not just because it was voiced-over (instad of full-dub or subtitles) but mainly because it was done by one of those old-generation readers: Mirosław Utta man with exceptional skills... Have you seen movie: Zawód Lektor? Man, those guys are...great!
But truth to be told I don't think anyone except Poles would appreciate it.
Any other GOGers out there have a weird obsession with anything related to Chernobyl and/or nuclear disasters? Being able to explore the Exclusion Zone from the comfort of my armchair, heck yes.

Kunovski: so I just checked and I have all three games already on DVDs from gaming magazines, DRM-free...

sadly I won't buy it here
As do I and from the brutally painful patching process, coupled with the DRM of the Retail Disks, $14 for my time is a slam dunk.

DRM-free magazine package? Nice!

Well, if you don't already know, they have guided tours there now. Very guided, complete with Geiger counters, IIRC.

Reever: So, I liked the book they were based on. But I suck at shooters. But I hear the atmosphere (and the story?) are good. So, could I get through the fights (with lower difficulty, mods?) and still enjoy the game, or rather not?
I think you can. I for my part totally suck at FPS (and therefore don't like them), but I completed STALKER several times with great pleasure. First of all, it's not so much about shooting wildly (which I'm pretty bad at) but more about thinking before acting. There are some areas where you need to shoot your way through - and the endgame is pretty hard - but for those instances you can easily lower the difficulty.
Mods aren't even necessary for adjusting the difficulty: You can easily text-edit the games .ltx files to determine how much damage you suffer from the various damage types. The necessary changes are documented, try googling stalker, ltx, difficulty/damage or something similar.

yep, the Czech market is probably so small the prices for licences to have games bundled with magazines (we have two, both sell around 8000 copies a month) are reasonable...

I've tried the first stalker now with my old saves from 2011, and found two things:

1) it has Czech dubbing which is horrible (I used to play a *ehmpiratedcopy* and replaced it with a legal one back in the 2011)
2) I'm in Yantar when I need to get a scientist to some lab, zombies everywhere and I'm out of ammo, so I'm basically screwed... it's really hard to continue playing :(

Did not know that. Mind = blown.

*puts $35 saved from promo into jar*

This is one company (not sure how reputable it is myself, this is for example purposes) that does these tours:

That's quite interesting. Since it's a tourism attraction I assume safety isn't an issue, but maybe it's part of the experience. *shrug*

Probably there are disclaimers to sign. Don't feed the animals, don't take that radioactive rock that you found. :) Most difficult disclaimer would be my wife allowing me to go however.
That is an offer that I could not refuse.

Erm yeah... I'd rather explore that site from my PC... They may have all the Geiger counters in the world. No thanks.

HereForTheBeer: There is a STALKER benchmark, to give you some idea how it will run. http://downloads.guru3d.com/S.T.A.L.K.E.R-Call-of-Pripyat-benchmark-download-2433.html#download
Thanks, that's what I needed! +1

EDIT: ...and seems to run fine on my box.
