Retro done right.

Shovel Knight, an action-platformer truly worthy of its NES roots, that delivers fun gameplay, great design, and a tide of memories in perfectly captured 8-bit style, is available on GOG.com for $14.99.

There has been way too many games recently aiming to cash in on our nostalgia without ever delivering what they promise: a real throwback to the classic gaming ideas and authentic retro feeling. Not this time! Here, even the story is perfectly nostalgic. The shovel-wielding hero has come to this land with two goals: to defeat the evil Enchantress and quest for his lost beloved. But, between Shovel Knight and his beloved stands a cadre of villainous knights. These terrible foes, known as The Order of No Quarter, have been dispatched to prevent the hero from reaching the Enchantress, and will pursue their mission at any cost. If you love games with perfect platforming, beautiful art, infectious music, crazy bosses, humor and levity, and real heart… this one is for you!

Shovel Knight is a sweeping classic action adventure game with awesome gameplay, memorable characters, and an 8-bit retro aesthetic. It's a hot mashup of new and old! You play as the eponymous Shovel Knight, a small knight with a huge quest. He wields a Shovel Blade: a multipurpose weapon whose techniques have now been lost to the ages. Always honest and helpful, Shovel Knight is a shining example of the code of Shovelry: Slash Mercilessly and Dig Tirelessly! With classic NES-era platforming gameplay, great humor, excellent level design, and perfectly captured graphical style of old, this amazing little gem offers to take you on a nostalgia trip you won't soon forget.

Prepare to jump, dig, dig-jump, and jump-dig in the amazing limited-palette realm of Shovel Knight, for $14.99 on GOG.com.

JudasIscariot: There is an NG+ mode and I have word that there will be more stuff added later on :)

Also, if you want a challenge, you can break the checkpoints to earn some loot as well :)
avatar
cyboff: Heh, I noticed checkpoints are quite shaking, when attacked, so they are even breakable? Great! A lot of cool ideas is in this game :D Also love the pixelart!
You can read all about the checkpoints here:

Pretty interesting to see the various versions of the checkpoint that were initially tried out :)

p.s. one think is bothering me - I think I have nearly broken D-pad on my Xbox controller already (have to send some thank you letter to Rogue Legacy devs :D), and will end up buying new controller soon - has PS3 or PS4 controller better D-pad?
I personally don't know about the D-pad on either of those but it has to be better than the Xbox one since you have a cross instead of the wheel like on the Xbox controller.

So which controller/gamepad you are using for the platformers then? (don't tell me you are playing Rogue Legacy with keyboard on your videos :P)

I use an Xbox 360 controller and trained myself to make the best possible use of the left analog stick :D

I would get a PS3/PS4 controller but I am not sure just how supported it is. I have also looked into getting a Logitech with DirectInput and Xinput support...

I have made some small research already and xbox and ps3/ps4 controllers should be supported well (also on Mac - ps3/ps4 needs remaping application, logitechs have some minor problems sometimes) ... but when it comes to my main question - "best d-pad" - can't find definitive answer :D

Bes thing to do would be to borrow one from a friend and try it out and see if you like it :)

I'd recommend a PS2 controller with a USB adapter (Alternate). It's a cheap solution, works well, PS2 controllers are durable as hell, and PS2 D-pads are great.

It's all a matter of preference really - excluding PC gamepads (because there are so many), my order would be Xbox 360 > PS4 > Wii U Pro Controller > Xbox One > PS3.

thx, it can be a winner:D But have to check first if it is supported on Mac too...

Heh, this is that case I was talking about - always ended up with opposite answers :D
Here's the link to last year's Kickstarter campaign for those who are interested in its development:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/yachtclubgames/shovel-knight?ref=nav_search

I backed for a copy that I could play on my Mac and have DRM-free, instead I'm stuck with a Steam Key for a game with as yet no fixed date for Mac release (as far as I could tell). (So I can apparently get it DRM-free through Steam? Not exactly what I thought I was getting...)

The GOG deal apparently came through just a week or two ago, but we backers aren't eligible for it here, and must buy our own copy separately.

While the game itself, I think, will fulfill all the promise of its Kickstarter campaign, the rollout of the game certainly has been a disappointment. And I'm not even talking about the fact that it was promised for September 2013 release - given computer games' record on Kickstarter (abyssal - only about a third have delivered their games TWO YEARS later).

gibbeynator: GOG really, REALLY needs to try and fight for actual extras in these indie games, or at least offer the same tiered purchases that Steam and Humble Store/Widget do.
avatar
fronzelneekburm: I'm with you here. I guess one of the things that might deter gog from doing that is that whenever they decide to go this road, the release threads are filled to the brim with complaints: "These extras should be free bonuses! Why do I have to PAY for extras?" One example that comes to mind would be "Ether One", some people seemed furious at the very idea of offering most of the bonus features in a $10 package (despite the fact that this package included the full soundtrack, which was seperately sold on bandcamp for almost the exact same amount).
Things like the soundtrack, art book, and even the manual were all added separately in higher pledge levels in the Kickstarter, so neither GOG nor Steam has the right to package those extras with the basic game, or you'd have at least 2,000 backers (if not all 15,000 of them) REALLY pissed off.

Wishlisted for now.

Sorry for the backers who didn't get entirely what was promised though. But it seems it's the norm with that kind of "financing".

tfishell: Definitely heard some pretty good things about this on r/games.

But next week, as the sale ends, personally I would like to see something released rival the commotion that SimCity 4 caused. The Neverhood has been supported by ScummVM for several months now (although I guess bugs are still being sorted out), so please keep hustling on bringing that.
DID Sim City 4 cause that much commotion? The only noise I remember was the complaints that it was twice as much as the Steam price for such an old game, that and people being weirded out that CS3000 had been skipped!

There's been a lot of cool 'hidden gem' releases recently like Sudeki, 7 Cities of Gold and Bad Mojo - I'd prefer you guys kept that up, unless there's going to be a batch of major publisher releases - especially Activision. those guys have been gone FAR too long!

Saying that, even though the sale will be over, it will still be the Summer slump so I'm not expecting TOO much...

gandalf.nho: I remember not backing the KS because the Nintendo-inspiration apparently envolved the high difficulty too. For the people already playing, is really Nintendo Hard?
Not at all. In fact it's a bit easy. Infinite lives (you lose money when you die but you can sometimes get it back) and checkpoints right before the boss make it very consumable. I would say that the levels are tailored to be enjoyed and played multiple times. You can, however, make it more difficult if you choose by destroying the checkpoints and they yield money. Each boss usually took me 2 times to beat. Once to see what their patterns were and once to try to deal with it. I assume there's a New Game + and I know there's the option to play through again as one of the bosses. (Spectre Knight I believe). So there's a lot of replayability and higher difficulties once the game is finished once.

Yacht Club Games has actually done a little write up about controllers here http://yachtclubgames.com/controllers/. tl;dr version PS4 is their favorite.

graspee: I've decided not to buy any new games from gog, only old finished ones, after finding out that several games I own on gog are unpatched compared to their steam versions.

There is no excuse for devs to delay patching their gog versions. Now I don't know if this dev would be on top of things or not, but I'd prefer not to risk it and get the game on steam instead.
avatar
IAmSinistar: I don't follow. How does punishing GOG for something out of their control encourage the devs to support GOG? Especially if you don't?
I'm not punishing GOG. I'm avoiding buying new games (as opposed to "old classics") on gog because a lot of new games are lagging behind steam patchwise.
