Retro done right.

Shovel Knight, an action-platformer truly worthy of its NES roots, that delivers fun gameplay, great design, and a tide of memories in perfectly captured 8-bit style, is available on GOG.com for $14.99.

There has been way too many games recently aiming to cash in on our nostalgia without ever delivering what they promise: a real throwback to the classic gaming ideas and authentic retro feeling. Not this time! Here, even the story is perfectly nostalgic. The shovel-wielding hero has come to this land with two goals: to defeat the evil Enchantress and quest for his lost beloved. But, between Shovel Knight and his beloved stands a cadre of villainous knights. These terrible foes, known as The Order of No Quarter, have been dispatched to prevent the hero from reaching the Enchantress, and will pursue their mission at any cost. If you love games with perfect platforming, beautiful art, infectious music, crazy bosses, humor and levity, and real heart… this one is for you!

Shovel Knight is a sweeping classic action adventure game with awesome gameplay, memorable characters, and an 8-bit retro aesthetic. It's a hot mashup of new and old! You play as the eponymous Shovel Knight, a small knight with a huge quest. He wields a Shovel Blade: a multipurpose weapon whose techniques have now been lost to the ages. Always honest and helpful, Shovel Knight is a shining example of the code of Shovelry: Slash Mercilessly and Dig Tirelessly! With classic NES-era platforming gameplay, great humor, excellent level design, and perfectly captured graphical style of old, this amazing little gem offers to take you on a nostalgia trip you won't soon forget.

Prepare to jump, dig, dig-jump, and jump-dig in the amazing limited-palette realm of Shovel Knight, for $14.99 on GOG.com.
Nice looking game but this retro style gives me a headache. Might save the cash for Divinity.
I've decided not to buy any new games from gog, only old finished ones, after finding out that several games I own on gog are unpatched compared to their steam versions.

There is no excuse for devs to delay patching their gog versions. Now I don't know if this dev would be on top of things or not, but I'd prefer not to risk it and get the game on steam instead.
Hrrmm. Sooo tempting.... after checking out this gameplay video with no grating LP commentary. Hooray! Further down on that page there's also a secondary video in which they talk about some of the basics of the game.

[grouchy_mode] And why does every game that is even remotely challenging have to do bring up a commentary on Dark Souls? Why? Fucking pussification of the modern gamer. Just saying. [/grouchy_mode]

I get pretty sick of hearing people treat the respectable challenge of Dark Souls as some sort of divine revelation. Dark Souls does a quality job of melding modern gameplay with old-school design, but so many people act like they've never experienced a game that doesn't play itself. Maybe they haven't.

Tangent: Dark Souls and other tough-but-fair games do not "hate you," as the underthought journalistic meme goes. They respect you. Big difference. "Here's the next level," says the game. "It's a tough one, but I'm sure you can handle it."
The game looks amazing! The trailer really made me want to play it, I'll add it to my wishlist and I'll try to buy it soon. Thanks, GOG, for this great release.

I don't follow. How does punishing GOG for something out of their control encourage the devs to support GOG? Especially if you don't?
Looks like my kind of game. I'll give a deeper look.
Bought this and played for about an hour. Game is pretty fun, but really easy so far. Beat the first two castles without much trouble. Hopefully it gets more challenging.

I really wouldn't put it past today's majority not playing a game that doesn't play itself. (Does that make sense? LOL) Kinda sad really that the meaning of a game is being blurred with 'cinematic experience' more and more.
Wishlisted, will definitely have to pick this up, just not now as I have already overspent my allocated game-buying moneys on the summer sale. Thanks for the release!

There is an NG+ mode and I have word that there will be more stuff added later on :)

Also, if you want a challenge, you can break the checkpoints to earn some loot as well :)

Looks fantastic. If I hadn't just purchased so many games from the sale, I'd be all over it. Wishlisted for later.
I love these kind of games because they actually look almost identical to an 8-bit NES game. Many indie games claim to be retro, but few actually manage to replicate the art and color palette exactly.

Heh, I noticed checkpoints are quite shaking, when attacked, so they are even breakable? Great! A lot of cool ideas is in this game :D Also love the pixelart!

p.s. one think is bothering me - I think I have nearly broken D-pad on my Xbox controller already (have to send some thank you letter to Rogue Legacy devs :D), and will end up buying new controller soon - has PS3 or PS4 controller better D-pad?
