A 2014 digital release of the 1993 remake of the 1984 classic!

Seven Cities of Gold: Commemorative Edition, a robust classic historical sim/strategy game about the expeditions to the New World, is available for only $5.99 on GOG.com.

As a fledgling 15th century explorer you have been given a mandate by the Spanish Crown to set sail for the New World and establish new settlements for the fortune and glory of Spain. You will have complete control over every aspect of your expedition - from the initial provisioning of your voyage, to the construction of forts and missions on newly discovered continents. Key to your survival will be how you interact with the native population of the New World - negotiate with a tribe’s Chief to establish peaceful trade ties or wipe out entire villages and plunder their resources.

Seven Cities of Gold: Commemorative Edition lets you step into the role of Christopher Columbus and chart a course to an unknown world of discovery, exploration, and conquest! The Commemorative Edition of Seven Cities of Gold is a remake of the 1984 classic, featuring enhanced graphics and sound. Choose to explore a historically accurate map of the Americas in the 15th century or a randomly generated New World. Hire men for your journey and equip your ship with food, animals, arms, and other items for trading. Command a series of daring expeditions to the New World - take control of mapping uncharted wilderness, building far-flung outposts, and establishing trade relations with over 8 different indigenous tribes.

Fill up your coffers as you trade, loot, or mine your way to new resources and treasures in Seven Cities of Gold: Commemorative Edition, for only $5.99 on GOG.com!

TurnipSlayerr: Big thanks to IAmSinistar for his help in getting in touch with the rights holder! Your efforts are very much appreciated by myself and everyone here at GOG and we wouldn’t be having this release today if it wasn’t for you! :)
Very glad to do it, and I am delighted that the game made it here! Solid gaming gold for us old-timers to enjoy again and for new-comers to experience the pleasure of for the first time. That's a big part of what makes GOG so great!
Excellent release, and thank you IAmSininstar for your part in bringing this classic here!
Thanks for the efforts, IAmSinistar

7CoG is, along with Colonization, one of the best games to depict the "exploration of the new world" setting.

Fever_Discordia: How come you guys didn't just assume this one was held by EA and, therefore, leave it alone though?
When I am really interested in a game I triple-check stuff, and was delighted to find that rights to this reside with Dan Bunten's children. I already knew of their efforts to bring back M.U.L.E. as a tablet game (M.U.L.E. Returns), so I figured they were interested in keeping their father's properties alive and available. I got in touch with Melanie Bunten, as well as GOG to see if they had interest, and once I had sounded both sides out I put them together. The rest is all GOG's and Ozark's efforts.

By the way, I'm really looking forward to the release of M.U.L.E. Returns for Android later this year. The original is truly a genre-making game.
Very nice to see this one come back to the public eye.
Will have to pick it up when I've crushed my backlog (which isn't as insurmountable a task as it was a few months ago).

Congrats to IAmSinistar for being the boss.

Methinks this calls for a giveaway.

IAmSinistar: snip
+1, and thank you for this awesomeness.
Outstanding release. I haven't played the remake, but the original version is one of my all-time favorites.
Since my supply of strategy and economic games to purchase on GOG is dwindling, as in nearly non-existent, I feel the urge to instabuy this...I'll sit on that thought for a few hours ;D

M.U.L.E. are you kidding....damn, I now have a reason to get a tablet!! That game was way ahead of it's time!
Oh no, not another mouldy oldie. I want more pixilated indy platformers!

Now, seriously - very good work IAmSinistar and GOG. Awesome release!
Great! I played the original game on my C64 when I was a kid.

@GOG
I hope you give IAmSinistar at least a free copy for his efforts.

tfishell: Nice going IAmSinistar! +1 Shoutout to the other rights' researchers, too.

zeffyr: Please share the clues for beginners with the community, we'd like to help as well! :)
This thread should be your starting place for any research attempt. You'll almost always find someone who has additional information on the title you're interested in, whether it's about the publisher or the ownership chain or whether there is a suitable edition for GOG. The amount of encyclopedic knowledge on tap there is frankly astounding. :)

Many hands make light work!
