A 2014 digital release of the 1993 remake of the 1984 classic!

Seven Cities of Gold: Commemorative Edition, a robust classic historical sim/strategy game about the expeditions to the New World, is available for only $5.99 on GOG.com.

As a fledgling 15th century explorer you have been given a mandate by the Spanish Crown to set sail for the New World and establish new settlements for the fortune and glory of Spain. You will have complete control over every aspect of your expedition - from the initial provisioning of your voyage, to the construction of forts and missions on newly discovered continents. Key to your survival will be how you interact with the native population of the New World - negotiate with a tribe’s Chief to establish peaceful trade ties or wipe out entire villages and plunder their resources.

Seven Cities of Gold: Commemorative Edition lets you step into the role of Christopher Columbus and chart a course to an unknown world of discovery, exploration, and conquest! The Commemorative Edition of Seven Cities of Gold is a remake of the 1984 classic, featuring enhanced graphics and sound. Choose to explore a historically accurate map of the Americas in the 15th century or a randomly generated New World. Hire men for your journey and equip your ship with food, animals, arms, and other items for trading. Command a series of daring expeditions to the New World - take control of mapping uncharted wilderness, building far-flung outposts, and establishing trade relations with over 8 different indigenous tribes.

Fill up your coffers as you trade, loot, or mine your way to new resources and treasures in Seven Cities of Gold: Commemorative Edition, for only $5.99 on GOG.com!

The GOG.com crew would like to heartily thank our user IAmSinistar for making this release possible! This is yet another game that made its way into our classic catalog with the help of our fantastic community.
I feel really old reading this thread.

Thank you IAmSinistar.
pong? :P
Ooh Murder on the Zinderneuf was missing from my list of missing IP for EA - corrected that
Sounds like an old-timey 'Consortium' in both setting and in that its from ages ago!

Was Jumpman REALLY published by IBM or was putting the IBM logo on your box like back then like putting the Windows logo on your box today?

Great game, almost a procedural detective mystery the way that it would generate the storyline. I'd love to see it become available again.

Jumpman was original all Epyx, from development to publication. (Well, the game itself was all Randy Glover, but you know what I mean.) So yes, very probably IBM wrapped it in PC Booter and published just that version.

Fever_Discordia: OMG no wonder I couldn't google it! I knew what it was but I always read it as Booster!
But DOSBox CAN do bootable floppies - right?
I'm pretty sure quite a few old games on GOG must be listed as PC booter on Mobygames...
My guess is that it depends on the game itself whether it can be run on DOSBox or not.
Consider a PC Booter disk with an OS that tells it to read every 4th track of the disk, until it reaches track 48, then move to track 2 and read every 3rd track. That means that while the disk when booted is quite readable, and does what it should do, any attempts to read it otherwise will result in quite weird results.
So even if DOSBox can run from bootable disks (which I'm really not sure about), that doesn't mean that all PC Booter games can be ported over.

Fever_Discordia: How come you guys didn't just assume this one was held by EA and, therefore, leave it alone though?

IAmSinistar: When I am really interested in a game I triple-check stuff, and was delighted to find that rights to this reside with Dan Bunten's children. I already knew of their efforts to bring back M.U.L.E. as a tablet game (M.U.L.E. Returns), so I figured they were interested in keeping their father's properties alive and available. I got in touch with Melanie Bunten, as well as GOG to see if they had interest, and once I had sounded both sides out I put them together. The rest is all GOG's and Ozark's efforts.

By the way, I'm really looking forward to the release of M.U.L.E. Returns for Android later this year. The original is truly a genre-making game.

Wow, what a life story
Never hear of it, but looks pretty good :)

Thanks to IAmSinistar for helping GOG to get this title here! Hope they rewarded your effort accordingly :)
Indeed, a pioneer in many ways. And certainly seemed to always be leading the edge in what was coming next, especially in multiplayer. Another good article, by the way.
Well, take note monopolistic mega-corporation Publishers, this is the positive side of an appreciative and respected customer base!

Anyway,
Let's colonize the New World in Name of IAmSinistar and gog!!!

You both rule and let's butcher some natives (pixels) in your name!

Ah yeah, I hadn't considered that PC Booter could also be a copy protection / encryption scheme as well as a way of ensuring the game got its hands on all possible PC resources - damn DRM!

Khadgar42: let's butcher some natives (pixels) in your name!
No, don't. I did miss a promotion because a village attacked me and I obliterated it, then the king and queen complained that they are trying to establish trade relations, not butcher them all. Makes me wonder what country my captain comes from...
Beware Cowards - IAmSinistar and GOG delivered! ;-)

Never owned a C64, so never played it, but I dig the graphics.

I assume you can't play as the natives, or can you?

HypersomniacLive: I assume you can't play as the natives, or can you?
No, you are always the explorer in this game. For the game to work as a native you'd either have to be in an expansionist tribe which does the exploring, or have the game be more of a diplomacy simulator where you make pacts with certain colonial powers and play them against each other. Both could make for interesting games, however.
Excellent release, have fond memories of playing this 'remade' SCoG back in the early '90s. Slightly too young to have experienced the 1984 original version, but judging from screenshots and descriptions it seems to have been far ahead of its time.

Thank you GOG and IAmSinistar!
