Be a Goal-Scoring Superstar Hero!

Sensible World of Soccer, the ultimate installment of the 1990s favorite pixelated sports game, with in-depth management options and over 29 000 real-life players you can pick for your dream-team, is now available on GOG.com, for only $5.99.

This game occupies a unique place in history: considered Best Amiga Game of All Time (by Amiga Power) and included in Stanford University's list of "the ten most important video games of all time" alongside such groundbreaking titles as Space Wars, Tetris, SimCity and Doom, there is more to this sports game than you might think. So what makes it such an amazing title? It combines an elegant simplicity of gameplay--there are eight directions of travel and single key to pass, shoot, head, and interact with the game--with authenticity and a deep career mode, where you must manage an entire soccer club or team as well as play the games.

In Sensible World of Soccer the controls are simple, but don't think the game is easy; it realistically models all of the players who were active in the sport at the time, and while if your finger-twitching skills aren't up to snuff you can still watch your team's games unfold in Coach Mode, you'll find that the A.I. poses a respectable challenge regardless of whether you're playing on the field or managing your team in the league.

Don't be fooled by the fact that this football--erm, soccer--game lacks the features of the most recent FIFA games Sensible World of Soccer is a true gem, and one that clearly has inspired the entire genre of sports games. Get it now for only $5.99 on GOG.com.
They really named a soccer game sensible?

Ghorpm: Yeah, but that was a period when Amiga was actually a better computer than PC. It didn't last long though ;)
We're talking about a 1996 game here when PC gamers already got Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, Tomb Raider etc., hardly part of the era when the Amiga was the better system. :P

Sure, why not, their whole company is kinda sensible. I bet they considered putting that word into Cannon Fodder's title at some point also.

Yeah, you are right. I didn't check the release data and was thinking about Sensible Soccer which was released in 1992 (not 100% sure about it) and THEN Amiga was a better system ;)
Very nice. I was hoping this would show up here eventually. Still great fun. That intro video is somewhat odd though. *shrug*

Well, yeah... in some aspects at least.

Anyway, still wondering about the quality of this port. I really would have appreciated a trailer. :P

mystral: Edit: OK, I don't mean to complain, but you really need to give us an easy way of changing the control scheme that was present in the original (as explained at the beginning of the manual). The default one is serviceable, but far from ideal.

Densetsu: Run "INSTALL.EXE" in your game folder.

I did that and had no problems with resetting the buttons (Windows XP).
I'm on Win 7 64 bit and the Install.exe doesn't work, even in xp or Win 95 compatibility mode. Might want to flag this particular game as having compatibility problems with newer OS.
Awesome :) My favorite football game here in the GOG :) Instant buy .

tburger: Ahh.. I keep on the wishlist for later buy. As for this week: Larry wins.
Ditto. Hookers and boats take precedent over soccer any day. Maybe next month.

Question: Do Europeans get profoundly pissed off by the title of this game? As much as I love American football, it is a nasty Western bastardization (spell) of the term and I don't think anyone else should have to suffer for that.

INSTALL.EXE is a DOS program so needs to be run from within DOSBOX. If you start DOSBOX manually then you can mount your game directory and then run it. e.g. something like:

mount C "C:\GOG Games\Sensible World of Soccer 96-97\"
C:
INSTALL

Obviously you are messing around with the default setup from that point on!
From the gamecard: 'Sensible World of Soccer 96-97 edition is the best and last installment of the most popular soccer series.'

So even GOG is trying to pretend that that game listed under 'More games from this series' never happened.

Thanks for the help, it seems to work.
It doesn't really invalidate my point about having an easy way to change controls though.
What's so sensible about it?
Holy cow :O instabuy!!

It doesn't have any of this in it:
