Current Mission: [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/silent_storm_gold]S2: Silent Storm Gold Edition
Availability: available now for $9.99
Operational Contact: GOG.com

Mission Briefing:
It is the year 1943. You need to put together a group of elite soldiers, penetrate the enemy infrastructure, obtain top-secret information, and blow everything the hell up. The complete assignment involves finishing two Allied and Axis campaigns, utilizing six separate player classes, and testing large number of maps, weapons, and items. Even though you may believe you’ve already completed such missions earlier, I can guarantee that S2: Silent Storm Gold Edition is something special in the tactical TBS genre: huge variety of gameplay possibilities with excellent 3D graphics and great physics make it one of the best team strategies ever.

Requirements:
Ability to think, click, and react required. Some basic military expertise beneficial but not required. If no previous training in this genre has been received, you will be trained.

Equipment:
An advanced Silent Storm engine, with completely destroyable environment and ragdoll physics, was created specifically to assist you on this mission. In addition to that you will receive the Silent Storm - Sentinels expansion, the soundtrack, manual, avatars, and , finally, wallpapers.

Extra Information:
Our intelligence reports show that the game has received a "E3 2003 Best of Show" award in the tactical genre. Later critic reviews and fan-reception proved that S2: Silent Storm is not a game that should be taken lightly. As one of the reports states: “Anybody who even kind of liked "Jagged Alliance" or its sequel should have already left by now for the store to pick up a copy.”

Mission Objective:
Destroy Everything!

Merchito: Having absolutely NO experience in this type of game, I would like to know if there is something of role-playing in its mechanics, like skills to chose/develop by spending experience points, and dices-rolls when attacking, critical hits or failure, etc.
Yeah, there are character classes, skills and perks. There may be die rolls but physics play a role i.e. bullet trajectory determines the point of impact (shots can even knock down some loose bricks). You can also make holes in most objects. My favourite use of that is finding an enemy hiding behind a wooden door and spraying it with sub-machine guns.
Sorry if it's been mentioned, but Is this purely mission-based or is there some sort of strategy & management part like in Jagged Alliance and X-Com?

Purebreed: This is an instant buy for sure and I already own hard copies of all three of them (hopefully Hammer and Sickle makes it's way to GoG as well).

THANK YOU, GOG!!!!

Bodkin: Now we only need Soldiers at War!
I have two hard copies of that game. One is a big box and the other is bundled with a bunch of other strategy games. Having said that, I would insta buy that is a second if it hits GoG!

S2: You should loot stuff, but that is really it
S3: You should loot and sell stuff. I vaguely recall there also being training (I spent most of my time on S2)

So, for all intents and purposes: no metagame, just the combat.

Yeah, the thing is that looting in S2 is not difficult. It's not like there is a lack of available dropped swag. *Everyone* drops something. With the limited carrying capabilities of your team, you will literally leave several hundred items strewn across each map you visit, depending on the map size. Plus, there are unlimited random encounter scenarios that you can participate in at any point of the game. Truly, the focus is squarely on tactical combat.
Never played before. It seems good.
Now I will love You forever GOG!!!!!! I've been waiting a long time for this one.... I even wanted to spend more than $50 for this one to get it from ebay USA, but then I was told the game wouldn't run under Windows 7 anyway... So thanks heaps for making my day and making one of my dreams come true!!

FOREVER YOURS!!
YES! INSTA-BUY! thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm usually one of the cheap bastards who waits for sales, but I've wanted to play this game for well over two years and could never find it for sale without paying redonkerous sums.

I think I'll pick this one up as is.
Hopefully The GOG version works with a lot of the mods, since there is an active Mod community for the game.
Probably the most controversial thing about the game was the last part,Until then it took place in fairly realistic WW2 section, but then it swings into Science Fiction. A lot of the gamers who are WW2 buffs did not like that..myself among them. Luckily there is a mod that replaces the infamous Kliene Panzers with a more realistic set of end game foes.
What makes this releaes even more awesome, is the fact that the game was also very hard to get as pirate/abandonware. I just hope that Hammer & Sickle is around the corner, that is even more obscure.

I hear it's not as good though. Have you played it?

Only the demo. The biggest gripe I've read about was the "guide dang it" structure of the campaign. But the tactical gameplay was, again, very good.

I've got the boxed version at home, but never got it to run. I heavily disliked the Science Fiction elements of the original, so that looked very interesting to me.

Thanks for the answers.

I just found the demo version and will give it a try.
