Here's to new beginnings!

Risen, a robust fantasy action-RPG from the Piranha Bytes studio, the developer behind the classic Gothic games, is now available 60% off on GOG.com. That's only $3.99 for the next 48 hours to start a new epic adventure!

It all begins on a mysterious volcanic island. The heavy tremors on the island bode ill for its inhabitants. Ancient temples have risen from the ground recently, bizarre creatures are terrorizing the area. Fear and terror is spreading among the population. Is it the end of all hope? A group of powerful men who call themselves "The Inquisitors" have taken it upon themselves to put an end to these events. They send an expedition to this remote island, but a storm takes hold of the ship and destroys it at sea. It was foretold that a hero will come, and the fate played its marked cards to set the events in motion. As if by a miracle, you survive the shipwreck and are stranded on the volcanic island alone. You find yourself amidst a chaos of rebellion, tyranny, and mystic rituals. It is up to you to decide to which side the pendulum of fate will swing.

In the epic world of Risen, filled with mysterious earthquakes, fearsome monsters, and unimaginable treasures, forge your path with the sword, learn the art of staff fighting, or become a powerful mage. Delve into a gritty, raw, and atmospheric fantasy world in which every action has a consequence. The game comes from the German Piranha Bytes studio, the team who brought us all three classic iterations in the fan-favorite Gothic Series. Do you want to see how the creators of one of the most acclaimed RPGs could do with the power of the modern gaming machines? Now you can, and with the 48-hour special launch offer you'll be amazed by the value you get for just $3.99 of your money.

With the addition of Risen to our DRM-Free catalog, we welcome a new publisher, Deep Silver, onboard GOG.com! There's no better way to start a new beautiful friendship, than with an epic RPG, especially when it comes with a 60% launch discount, that will be available until Saturday, April 5, at 9:59AM GMT.

ReptilePZ: So, Risen 3 on gog confirmed then? :P
Unlikely. I remember seeing an announcement somewhere that made a big point of it requiring Steam. I suspect the appearance of the first two games here may simply be a PR move by Deep Silver to try and entice GOG users to buy the third game on Steam.
welcome to gog, risen!
and the rest of deepsilver's catalogue ;)
Just realized it came with a launch discount. To my library it goes, then.

catpower1980: Deep Silver titles of interest :

- Sacred 2 & 3 (upcoming)
- Killer Is Dead (upcoming)
- Nail'd
- The Secret Files series
- Risen 1 & 2
- Saints Row 3 & 4
- Dead Island & DI Riptide
- Metro 2033 & Last Light

Quite an impressive catalogue of newer games...
I'd love to have the Saints row series over here, that's for sure.

Trilarion: DeepSilver seems to be one of the good guys. I'll buy more from them.
That wasn't always the case. If you remember The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav only made it here due to Daedalic's ability to self-publish here, despite the use of the DSA IP. Apparently it was at Deep Silver's insistence that all versions published by them be in the form of Steam keys only (including retail).

I dunno where the change of heart has come from, but the very extensive Humble Deep Silver Bundle last year tells me that their Steam sales probably aren't as stellar as they'd like them to be.

Very nice release. Have the boxed set, enjoyed the game. Glad to get the DRM-free backup at this price.
Ah, at last DRM-free Risen on GOG.com ! A value addition to the Gothic series and one of my favorite games. :)
Great release and a new publisher to boot.
Sure felt tricked when I bought this retail. My bad though for not checking, I just went with the fact that Gothic 3 had had TAGES patched out of it and since Risen was out for a while already then I didn't even check, only to find it laden with it. So good news to see it here...
If I ever get a new OS this is my first purchase.

Man, my short hairs stood on end just looking at those screen shots. I may have to have a Gothic 2 row to get me settled from this.

You know I was wondering when this game will finally release. Took awhile has it not?

Licurg: Not the best game ever made, but a nice treat for all Gothic fans .

Crosmando: It's OK, I never finished it, got bored as I remember. It's like a scaled-down Gothic I guess, not nearly as vast and long as any of the Gothics, but similar core gameplay. Understandable Piranha Bytes made it considering how the overly-ambitious Gothic 3 turned out.

Risen 2 I have heard from various accounts is the "Dragon Age 2" of the series and worth staying away from.
Can I ask is Risen's controls more "Standard for PC gaming today" than Gothic's Controls such as:

WASD to move and strafe+Mouse to Look?

Crosmando: Well, the developers of Gothic literally ran out of money/time part way through development and had to chuck the game out onto the market in an incomplete state, it wasn't until the Community Patch (which GOG includes) that the game was somewhat "fixed". It's also why outside Myrtana the game feels quite empty.

Still though, G3 is a true non-linear experience, it's an open-world RPG where you can kill any NPC and still be able to finish the game, you don't even really need to follow the story you can cut ahead right to the end. In some ways it's even more open than Morrowind, where if you kill quest-essential NPC like Vivec you create a dead-end.

For anyone who is interested, there's an unofficial patch for Risen which fixes some issues:

If GOG version is patched to 1.10 then it will work.
Our version is patched to version 1.11, which removes the last vestiges of DRM from the game AND it has the changes from version 1.10 as well :)

MasodikTiasma: As Fesin mentioned a few posts higher up, it also has a really great combat system, and that's a first for a Piranha Bytes game (or maybe for an RPG in general at that time).
It's actually quite similar to Gothic 1+2, though maybe a little bit more refined.

And yes, the game is pretty much as perfectly optimized as a PC game could ever hope to be. Which was surprising, considering previous Piranha Bytes games were notoriously bad optimized and always required really good hardware.

That's old news already. Deep Silver already announced that the retail version in at least the German-speaking countries is going to be DRM-free. No word on the international version though.

DS recently released a patch that removes all the DRM, so if you want you could just download that.
Neat! For $4 I grabbed it right away!

Ooooh, lovely. Sounds like the anti-Steam campaign with Risen 2 did have a definite impact on sales then for Deep Silver to take such a drastic turn. May have to consider this one then.

Do you have a link of some description?
