Here's to new beginnings!

Risen, a robust fantasy action-RPG from the Piranha Bytes studio, the developer behind the classic Gothic games, is now available 60% off on GOG.com. That's only $3.99 for the next 48 hours to start a new epic adventure!

It all begins on a mysterious volcanic island. The heavy tremors on the island bode ill for its inhabitants. Ancient temples have risen from the ground recently, bizarre creatures are terrorizing the area. Fear and terror is spreading among the population. Is it the end of all hope? A group of powerful men who call themselves "The Inquisitors" have taken it upon themselves to put an end to these events. They send an expedition to this remote island, but a storm takes hold of the ship and destroys it at sea. It was foretold that a hero will come, and the fate played its marked cards to set the events in motion. As if by a miracle, you survive the shipwreck and are stranded on the volcanic island alone. You find yourself amidst a chaos of rebellion, tyranny, and mystic rituals. It is up to you to decide to which side the pendulum of fate will swing.

In the epic world of Risen, filled with mysterious earthquakes, fearsome monsters, and unimaginable treasures, forge your path with the sword, learn the art of staff fighting, or become a powerful mage. Delve into a gritty, raw, and atmospheric fantasy world in which every action has a consequence. The game comes from the German Piranha Bytes studio, the team who brought us all three classic iterations in the fan-favorite Gothic Series. Do you want to see how the creators of one of the most acclaimed RPGs could do with the power of the modern gaming machines? Now you can, and with the 48-hour special launch offer you'll be amazed by the value you get for just $3.99 of your money.

With the addition of Risen to our DRM-Free catalog, we welcome a new publisher, Deep Silver, onboard GOG.com! There's no better way to start a new beautiful friendship, than with an epic RPG, especially when it comes with a 60% launch discount, that will be available until Saturday, April 5, at 9:59AM GMT.
Well, the developers of Gothic literally ran out of money/time part way through development and had to chuck the game out onto the market in an incomplete state, it wasn't until the Community Patch (which GOG includes) that the game was somewhat "fixed". It's also why outside Myrtana the game feels quite empty.

Still though, G3 is a true non-linear experience, it's an open-world RPG where you can kill any NPC and still be able to finish the game, you don't even really need to follow the story you can cut ahead right to the end. In some ways it's even more open than Morrowind, where if you kill quest-essential NPC like Vivec you create a dead-end.

For anyone who is interested, there's an unofficial patch for Risen which fixes some issues:

If GOG version is patched to 1.10 then it will work.

Fantastic, great release. I think the 60h of gameplay is overstating it though, the game is very, very short in comparison to Gothic II, for example. I would say 20-30h is more appropriate.
This is one of the times I hate gog... I have the boxed collectors edition.. but having it drm free here would be nice... damn :D

catpower1980: Deep Silver titles of interest :

- Killer Is Dead (upcoming)

Quite an impressive catalogue of newer games...
WOW I'd not heard that the PC was getting a port of this!
SWEET!
I've heard a lot about Suda 51 and how crazy his games are - more Suda 51 titles to follow?

nice release.
Finally!

I'm so happy right now, that's an insta-buy and almost-insta-(re)play for me.
I don't know what excites me more - having Risen finally here on GOG.com, or having Deep Silver as a publisher and getting all there other games I could never play thanks to Steam (Metro, pretty please?).

Regarding Risen, it definitely has it's flaws - the late game is pretty tedious and lore, story, background information etc. leaves much to be desired.
On the other hand, it does a lot of stuff really good: an awesome fighting system, a beautiful, handcrafted (although admittedly kinda small) world - better than what you're going to see in most RPGs, if not games in general (Piranha Bytes are imo one of the best developers in the world regarding level design).
And it also has one of the best quest (series) in any Piranha Bytes game.

I couldn't agree more, it was an impressive game in a number of ways - in retrospect, the only thing I truly despised about G3 was its main quest (or lack thereof). Totally unengaging, devoid of interesting characters/memorable dialogue or compelling chain of events in general, such a huge step backwards compared to G1&2.

Lovely release, although superfluous for me, as I already have it DRM-free on disc and on Steam from a bundle. Still, when Risen 2 inevitably arrives here (already announced as I recall by Deep Silver), that will be a day-one purchase for me, provided that the price isn't too high.

The most recent patch for the retail version removes the disc-based copy protection from the European versions and the online DRM from the US version.
Great. Although I have it on disc I'll buy it again here just to have a backup. And there is no regional pricing as I feared, so I like it even more. DeepSilver seems to be one of the good guys. I'll buy more from them.

Btw. when is part 2 coming?
Already own this on steam from a sale but it just refused to work on my Win 7 installation so picking it up here since I'm confident GOG did thorough testing that it works :)

MasodikTiasma: This game feels almost like a Gothic 2 HD remix. Nothing wrong with that, Gothic 2 is a masterpiece.

I have one big complaint about it, though: the entire world is explored and all side-quests are possible to finish way too early. By the half of the game you'll have nothing but the main quest left, and it's not very exciting. It would be better if there were new side quests appearing in the later chapters of the game.
That reminds me a lot of the original Gothic. Most of the side quests could be completed within the first chapter...in fact, you kind of had to, since quests were the only reliable way to gain EXP while you were low level. It helps (or doesn't, depending on how you look at it) that the game is quite buggy even after applying the last patch, so it's possible to complete even side quests you technically shouldn't be able to that early in the game. But once you've finished them, there is only like one or two side quests that are only available in later chapters; after that, you're got nothing else to do but explore and do the main quest.

Anyway, Angry Joe slammed this game when he reviewed it, but he reviewed the Xbox 360 version. How does the PC version fare? While I still have Gothic games to play, once I've done that, I would be interested in a Gothic-like game.

Regardless, it's great to have Deep Silver on GOG.
So, Risen 3 on gog confirmed then? :P
Welcome Deep Silver and may we have a great run with your games here on GOG.

Straight to the wishlist this game goes, if for no other reason than I'm afraid if my backlog grows even more it will collapse on itself and turn into a black hole.

About the game itself I find it funny on one screenshot your clothes are tattered and torn - probably the sames you had on the shipwreck - and one girl says "You look like you've got deep pockets."
YES madam! In fact they're torn, so I suppose they're so deep I can't even reach their bottom.

I heard the 360 version was awfully optimised and really ugly, but not so on PC, not at all. It ran very well, I didn't encounter any bugs (I'm not saying there aren't any, maybe I just got lucky), the graphics were high quality for 2009 and the environments absolutely gorgeous. The NPC not so much on the other hand, you can see that in the screenshots...

As Fesin mentioned a few posts higher up, it also has a really great combat system, and that's a first for a Piranha Bytes game (or maybe for an RPG in general at that time).

EDIT: Just to give you an impression of the hardware requirements: the PC I ran this game on in 2009 was brand new at the time, medium range hardware of those days (Radeon 5770, I7 processor, 4GB ram), and it ran flawlessy.

Instabuy. :)

I have it also on Steam already, but oh well. At least I know now not to buy the missing DLCs for Risen 2. I'll wait for the GOG release instead (hopefully including the DLCs).
