Here's to new beginnings!

Risen, a robust fantasy action-RPG from the Piranha Bytes studio, the developer behind the classic Gothic games, is now available 60% off on GOG.com. That's only $3.99 for the next 48 hours to start a new epic adventure!

It all begins on a mysterious volcanic island. The heavy tremors on the island bode ill for its inhabitants. Ancient temples have risen from the ground recently, bizarre creatures are terrorizing the area. Fear and terror is spreading among the population. Is it the end of all hope? A group of powerful men who call themselves "The Inquisitors" have taken it upon themselves to put an end to these events. They send an expedition to this remote island, but a storm takes hold of the ship and destroys it at sea. It was foretold that a hero will come, and the fate played its marked cards to set the events in motion. As if by a miracle, you survive the shipwreck and are stranded on the volcanic island alone. You find yourself amidst a chaos of rebellion, tyranny, and mystic rituals. It is up to you to decide to which side the pendulum of fate will swing.

In the epic world of Risen, filled with mysterious earthquakes, fearsome monsters, and unimaginable treasures, forge your path with the sword, learn the art of staff fighting, or become a powerful mage. Delve into a gritty, raw, and atmospheric fantasy world in which every action has a consequence. The game comes from the German Piranha Bytes studio, the team who brought us all three classic iterations in the fan-favorite Gothic Series. Do you want to see how the creators of one of the most acclaimed RPGs could do with the power of the modern gaming machines? Now you can, and with the 48-hour special launch offer you'll be amazed by the value you get for just $3.99 of your money.

With the addition of Risen to our DRM-Free catalog, we welcome a new publisher, Deep Silver, onboard GOG.com! There's no better way to start a new beautiful friendship, than with an epic RPG, especially when it comes with a 60% launch discount, that will be available until Saturday, April 5, at 9:59AM GMT.

tburger: I told ya it will be newer game. OK, what else does Deep Silver have?

Grargar: Metro, Sacred 2, Saints Row and Dead Island.
Metro... Man, I got burned on that one. Bought the physical copy, carefully checked it over before purchase to make sure it didn't have some stupid online-activation or steam, and it looked clean. Got it home, read the manual, nothing about protection or online requirements.

FIre it up and.... STEAM! Dammit!

Yet another layer of trust broken. Why the hell should I have to research something like this before I buy it? What's next, I'll be expected to take every meal to a lab to make sure it doesn't have rat poison in it?

Didn't it have this?

Anyway, nowadays the customer is supposed to have a Steam account if he is to buy a retail game.

We are supposed to have Steam account if we are buying retail games? Not true and if they make it look like so it is like prioritizing one retailer over another.

You see, that´s why I like DRM free games.

phaolo: ... Do you know if there are mods on pc that fix such problems?
Well, not really mods but there are cheats. So if the game is too brutal, you can further ease the play by instant killing of the target for example or by resurrection of enemies or by more experience or money. Of course too much of it kind of takes the fun away.

But in the final combat after 10 or so tries I just killed the enemy by cheat, just to see the end sequence. Turns out there isn't much of an end sequence, so I should have stopped playing earlier.

However discovering the island and the port city is indeed lovely. Risen is a good 4 star rating game.

edit: Bought it again from here now, can finally throw away (resell, put on shelf, ...) the disc. And bought a couple of copies more (thanks GOG that multiple gifting is still a bit of pain in the ass) and send them to people who announced in this thread that they are waiting to buy this game. No need to wait.

True reason is to convince Deepsilver by profitable sales here that Risen 3 should come to GOG rather sooner than later!

the price is real steal for AA+ game. its a pity i use only old pc for net and old games 'cause the price is purely and simply crazy :-)
Great release!
This really fell off my radar with PB/DS insisting on Steam, though I meant to pick up a retail copy eventually. Now I have it on GOG, next best thing.

Thanks to the team and the untiring critics that have given PB hell for this DRM nonsense.

Well, taking a look at my closest retail store, about 4/5 of the games there demand Steam. Anything that doesn't, is either old or a freak occurrence. The companies think that consumers will have Steam anyway, so it won't really bother them. It is also why I have almost completely stopped buying retail games nowadays, because they are nothing more than glorified Steam keys.

Thank you guys.
For me, the ending chapters are very important, so I think I'll skip this game for now.
Maybe the next Risen 3 will be best of the trilogy...? : )
Bought it instantly even though i already own preordered retail copy. Amazing value for money. Absolutely beautiful game.
I played through it twice and looking forward to another playthrough. For anyone interested i recommend to play as an archer. With 200 dex you're unstopable.

Interesting, definitely something I'll end up trying. That or magic...

I can't help but expect this will feel a lot like Morrowind's system, thankfully I don't know any of the quests and haven't sunken 300+ hours in this yet so I won't feel like I'm hurrying to finish old quests for a new game...

Reminds me, a few years ago before I had a machine strong enough to handle it, my GF got me Skyrim. On the back it's quite clear it needs steam to activate/play, and for that I utterly hated that fact (in fact I hate it now), being forced to sign up to steam to activate a game to be able to play it, afterwards I can't give the disc to anyone because they need to activate the game through steam as well in order for it to play, so the only advantage of having the disc is saving you 4-8 Gigs of downloading, but you still gotta get 200Mb+ download for the updates/patches.

Honestly I've given up on Steam (especially recently with all the shovel-ware being dumped on it), I might try and see if I can get a full refund on everything (except for like 3 games because they work outside of steam or I finished them).

Leroux: ... You're not seriously trying to defend the use of the non-word "Rollenspielepiele" though? It's clearly a typo, no reputable journalist would invent such a silly word with the excuse of translating 1:1 from English. :D
avatar
Trilarion: But even in english they use "playing game". What do they think a game is made for? Eating. Of course it is playing. So role game (RG) should be sufficient in principle.

Yes it is silly, but grammatically correct. I wouldn't use it but I'm very tolerant about others using language in a way they see fit.

So if they want, let them and don't insist on it being a typo.
My educated guess is this is a kind of typo - you know, the sort, where you have written a word (let's say "Spiele" and then decide to rewrite it and to save some work, you delete only the first part of said word (here: "S" and then write it anew and (as that's the way our brain works) you don't stop after the first part, and instead write the full word again ("Rollenspiele"), only there is still the "piele" from your first try and so it ends up as "Rollenspielepiele".

It makes sense, if you think about it:

In the linked article, that original first sentence could have been: "Die Piranha Bytes Spiele Risen und Risen 2 ..."

Then the author decided to make it clear to which genre the games belong, so s/he deleted the capital "S" and wrote "Rollenspiele", where "Rollens" would have been enough.

It's an error, I often make.

Though, usually, I do notice it, when I proofread my writing. An ability, most professional writers obviously don't own.
Great release. Already have it elsewhere, but if not, would have bought it at this price, it's a very good game.

Nope, my box looks different. It looks like this. The only difference between those photos and mine is that the cover of my box has an "Exclusif Xbox 360 et Windows" text on the front next to the "PC DVD" logo in the top-right. This is the Canadian version, hence the French on it.

That sucks. Maybe Canada doesn't have a law that requires companies to write it on the game if it requires internet?

Pretty much every other game I've seen that requires an Internet connection does state so on the box. This seems to be an exception to the case. Excessively annoying though, as I refuse to install the steam client on my computer.
