Here's to new beginnings!

Risen, a robust fantasy action-RPG from the Piranha Bytes studio, the developer behind the classic Gothic games, is now available 60% off on GOG.com. That's only $3.99 for the next 48 hours to start a new epic adventure!

It all begins on a mysterious volcanic island. The heavy tremors on the island bode ill for its inhabitants. Ancient temples have risen from the ground recently, bizarre creatures are terrorizing the area. Fear and terror is spreading among the population. Is it the end of all hope? A group of powerful men who call themselves "The Inquisitors" have taken it upon themselves to put an end to these events. They send an expedition to this remote island, but a storm takes hold of the ship and destroys it at sea. It was foretold that a hero will come, and the fate played its marked cards to set the events in motion. As if by a miracle, you survive the shipwreck and are stranded on the volcanic island alone. You find yourself amidst a chaos of rebellion, tyranny, and mystic rituals. It is up to you to decide to which side the pendulum of fate will swing.

In the epic world of Risen, filled with mysterious earthquakes, fearsome monsters, and unimaginable treasures, forge your path with the sword, learn the art of staff fighting, or become a powerful mage. Delve into a gritty, raw, and atmospheric fantasy world in which every action has a consequence. The game comes from the German Piranha Bytes studio, the team who brought us all three classic iterations in the fan-favorite Gothic Series. Do you want to see how the creators of one of the most acclaimed RPGs could do with the power of the modern gaming machines? Now you can, and with the 48-hour special launch offer you'll be amazed by the value you get for just $3.99 of your money.

With the addition of Risen to our DRM-Free catalog, we welcome a new publisher, Deep Silver, onboard GOG.com! There's no better way to start a new beautiful friendship, than with an epic RPG, especially when it comes with a 60% launch discount, that will be available until Saturday, April 5, at 9:59AM GMT.

Tarhiel: Instabuy - do you even have to ask this?
Well I do as I have neither played this nor any other game by Piranha Bytes before. According to most of the reviews I've read the narrative of Risen is rather bland and I happen to prefer RPG's with strong narratives.
Already had this from a pack. Bought it anyway to support DRM free games and GOG in particular.
Keep up the good work and welcome aboard Deep Silver

Cavalary: Hmm... So what's the character limit on reviews (and why is there one)? Tried to submit the one I wrote back when I played it, minus the parts about TAGES, which obviously no longer apply here, and some speculation about Risen 2, and then also slashed the introduction after it first told me it's too long, but still no go.

Didn't have any for games released on here before, so first time I try to post one...

VanishedOne: See http://www.gog.com/wishlist/site/increase_character_limit_on_reviews and the threads linked in its comments.
1500 characters? Damn, wth can you fit in that? That's pretty much 2 paragraphs, give or take... Or about the size of what I consider largely just some brief comments to justify my rating that I post on some other sites, usually for books. By review I tend to understand something entirely different from that!
I already have this one on disc, but might get a GOG copy some other time. It's a pretty solid Action-Adventure/RPG, with a fairly original setting. I wouldn't call it a "must-have" but I can recommend it to fans of the genre, especially at the current price. It's easily worth that much. Also, nice to see some more new(-ish) AA(A) games here at GOG. :P

AnimalMother117: You know, while I'm on the topic, I've seen some gameplay of Divinity II and it looks really eerily similar to the Gothic and Risen games. Can anyone verify if they play the same or which one is better?
I'd say not at all. Divinity 2 is quite action-RPG, faster, lots of gear that's important, swarming enemies, health and mana bars can be expected to rather quickly go up and down, jumping and running (as human, I mean)... Quite the opposite of the first two Gothics for one, and Risen's very tactical in battles as well, or at least it was for me. Then again, exploring nearly all the map (bar what'd require me to kill ogres, ashbeasts or brontocs) in chapter one with a planned mage, so no skills, period, it had to be very tactical, and yet it was still possible.
Very nice to see this on here even if I already own it on Steam. I will gladly add this to my never ending list of drm-free games to own on here ;)
Welcome aboard, Deep Silver!

Having Saints Row series and Rhodan DRM-free in GOG packing would be bloody awesome (read Insta-buy). And I wouldn't mind Lost Horizon :).

Okay, thanks for clearing that up.

rtcvb32: I don't suppose there's any patches (official or otherwise) to update/improve the models and textures? I certainly don't expect this to be like TES Morrowind which got a huge graphical update via community support; Could be something similar out there... But I'm doubting Risen has an open editor.
No idea, since I played this vanilla when it came out. The best community website AFAIK for Piranha Bytes game is worldofgothic.com (or worldofrisen.com), and they have a modding section in the forums (it's a German site originally and in the forums they don't translate everything, so it's better if you have some knowledge of German) :

http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/forums/658-Risen-Modifications-and-Editing

Some other links I found googling for "Risen mods":

Deep Silver forums have a modding section too http://forum.deepsilver.com/forum/forumdisplay.php/315-Add-On-s-amp-Modifications-Ri1

And there's a NexusMods page for Risen: http://www.nexusmods.com/risen/?

Have fun ! If you find some interesting mods in there, I wouldn't mind hearing about in PM, since I'll probably start a new playthrough of Risen again in the near-future.

A 'German' game from a German developer and a German publisher available in German language on GOG from day one? What madness is this? :P

Picked it up without hesitation, and looking forward to part two. But I'm more excited about Deep Silver finally joining GOG. Let's just hope it doesn't end with Risen 1 and 2, and that they've really changed their mind about DRM. I would love to see Metro, Saints Row, Dead Island and others here DRM-free as well.
Wishing I didn't already have these on Steam. If they had come here first, ah well, you know how it goes.

bansama: Unfortunately not a good question to ask me as my GamersGate account has been tagged as a US one. That means Japanese regional restrictions don't apply to me on GamersGate. So I can't tell you if it's regionally restricted on GamersGate or not.

Funny thing is, Sacred 2 is the reason I have a US tagged account. Not due to availability, but due to testing their download servers a few years back.
That can actually happen? Then what happens if you try entering these links without having logged in with your account? GamersGate automatically detects my European location whether I'm logged in or not.
And why is there no relevant entry on GOG's blog?
Reading the OP here, I got the impression that Deep Silver finally joining GOG.com is a big enough deal, no?

Gdoc, our Social Media Master, is out sick so there's going to be a slight delay on things such as GOG Blog posts :(

Get well soon, Gdoc!

Well, have you played Gothic? If you like that type of gameplay mechanics and you character controls, you´ll feel right at home in Risen. Basically, Risen is like Gothic 1+2, only without the name Gothic (they lost the rights to IP to their publisher back in the day, if I am not mistaken).
As somebody already pointed out in reviews, storywise, this is traditional "save-the-world" kind of story (read the most helpful review).

+ honestly, this game for this kind of a price it´s a steal - if you´re considering buying it, don´t wait :)
