Here's to new beginnings!

Risen, a robust fantasy action-RPG from the Piranha Bytes studio, the developer behind the classic Gothic games, is now available 60% off on GOG.com. That's only $3.99 for the next 48 hours to start a new epic adventure!

It all begins on a mysterious volcanic island. The heavy tremors on the island bode ill for its inhabitants. Ancient temples have risen from the ground recently, bizarre creatures are terrorizing the area. Fear and terror is spreading among the population. Is it the end of all hope? A group of powerful men who call themselves "The Inquisitors" have taken it upon themselves to put an end to these events. They send an expedition to this remote island, but a storm takes hold of the ship and destroys it at sea. It was foretold that a hero will come, and the fate played its marked cards to set the events in motion. As if by a miracle, you survive the shipwreck and are stranded on the volcanic island alone. You find yourself amidst a chaos of rebellion, tyranny, and mystic rituals. It is up to you to decide to which side the pendulum of fate will swing.

In the epic world of Risen, filled with mysterious earthquakes, fearsome monsters, and unimaginable treasures, forge your path with the sword, learn the art of staff fighting, or become a powerful mage. Delve into a gritty, raw, and atmospheric fantasy world in which every action has a consequence. The game comes from the German Piranha Bytes studio, the team who brought us all three classic iterations in the fan-favorite Gothic Series. Do you want to see how the creators of one of the most acclaimed RPGs could do with the power of the modern gaming machines? Now you can, and with the 48-hour special launch offer you'll be amazed by the value you get for just $3.99 of your money.

With the addition of Risen to our DRM-Free catalog, we welcome a new publisher, Deep Silver, onboard GOG.com! There's no better way to start a new beautiful friendship, than with an epic RPG, especially when it comes with a 60% launch discount, that will be available until Saturday, April 5, at 9:59AM GMT.

JudasIscariot: Die Piranha Bytes Rollenspielepiele Risen und Risen 2 sind ab sofort bzw. in Kürze als DRM-freie Versionen

Untranslated :)
My translation to english word for word:

The Piranha Bytes Roleplayinggames Risen and Risen 2 are from now or before long as DRM free versions... obtainable.

It's 1:1 mapping to english showing that both languages are quite similar.

Leroux: is it completely independent from the official game's story? Could it be enjoyed even before finishing Risen?
I think so, but It's been a while since I played it, so it might be somehow be vaguely related. Nothing major in any way though.

I guess you can play it before the main game, but of course because of it's rather short length it misses a lot of the features, so it might not be a good indicator of how good Risen is.

rtcvb32: I don't suppose there's any patches (official or otherwise) to update/improve the models and textures? I certainly don't expect this to be like TES Morrowind which got a huge graphical update via community support; Could be something similar out there... But I'm doubting Risen has an open editor.
There are a few texture mods and some other slight graphical improvements.
You best just install the Mod-Starter which comes with a database that collects pretty much every mod for Risen - then just look at the description and pictures what you like. Installation process is also extremely easy thanks to this tool.

The community actually did a lot of work to make Risen easy to mod - even a former Piranha Bytes employee (who was also responsible for the Mod Kit for Gothic 2) did a lot of work. In my understanding you can now almost pretty much everything except new animations.

Yup, it's just odd as I have always seen Rollenspiele and now this new-fangled Rollenspielespiele rolled into town :P
Uh, nice release! I never was particularly interested in the Risen games. But with the game now here at GOG.com, I think that I’ll finally pick it up.

For whatever reason, I’m more interested in Risen 2 – Dark Waters and the whole Pirate thing though. If the later will come to GOG.com as well, I consider waiting for its release and picking the games up together. I expect that both games will become available for a similar special offer when the second game will be released.

For me it is new too. I wouldn't use it although it is definitely not wrong.
This is a game I will buy when I have some money. Broke for a long time now. Still, thank you for releasing it. Yes I have this game for a long time now on digital form, but I don't consider my digital downloads as mine till I buy them from GOG.

Keep bringing both old and newer titles. (DRM FREE)

AnimalMother117: I had the Xbox 360 version of this game and found it barely playable at worst and kinda bland at best. Most of my problems might be the fault of the lack of power in the Xbox 360. However, I must ask, does this version fix all the problems so well that it would be worth getting it twice? I might need something to hold me over until Witcher 3 comes out, not that there's nothing else I can play. I also acknowledge this plays very differently from Witcher.
The 360 version just doesn't work as well as the PC version. It really feels better as a PC game than an XBOX game.

That said, I never did finish the game. I put in plenty of hours, but the game started to fall flat. I might give it a try later, but then again, I might not.

What I love about this game (and Risen 2 which I liked better, but still found too many problems to finish) is that you have a lot of opportunity to explore. I played Risen 1's beginning twice b/c my computer crashed or I died or something. On my second play, I ended up finding lots of little places right in the beginning that I missed b/c I wasn't exploring. I was geared up better and was was far more capable of making it in the world.

The combat's not terribly good (Risen 2 is perhaps better, but still not good), which ruins the game for me. But I don't think I've ever played a game I had more fun with as for as exploration, the thrill of discovering a lost temple or just a little lost pack with some valuable gear in it.

Hm, still skeptical as to whether or not it's worth getting a second time. I did like the combat more than the likes of D&D games and Dragon Age, because there is actual player input. However, I found that despite their popularity on the console WRPGs didn't really work well on the 360, mostly due to poorly optimized controls and graphics making for choppy, un-fun experiences. To return to Risen, I always felt it was a game I would like more if the frame rate were somewhat bearable, but I'm not entirely sure it's fun enough as a game in the time I played it to warrant seeing if that theory was correct.

(Oh goodness "Mother" it's four bucks, it's not like it's your life savings you're wagering here.) (Sorry that's how I talk to myself.)

You know, while I'm on the topic, I've seen some gameplay of Divinity II and it looks really eerily similar to the Gothic and Risen games. Can anyone verify if they play the same or which one is better?

I've already played a bit of Risen, but the expected length and not really knowing what to do, where to start, always intimidates me a bit, and also because I still need to play through Gothic 2. So a shorter dose of Risen in between and before I tackle the real game might actually be something welcome to me.

Hi !

Can anyone tells me if there are good mods for both Risen and Risen 2 Dark Waters ?

If so, please point out the URL for installing/downloading them !

Thanks!

You're not seriously trying to defend the use of the non-word "Rollenspielepiele" though? It's clearly a typo, no reputable journalist would invent such a silly word with the excuse of translating 1:1 from English. :D

But even in english they use "playing game". What do they think a game is made for? Eating. Of course it is playing. So role game (RG) should be sufficient in principle.

Yes it is silly, but grammatically correct. I wouldn't use it but I'm very tolerant about others using language in a way they see fit.

So if they want, let them and don't insist on it being a typo.

The 360 version is notorious for being one of the worst PC -> console ports of all time. The PC version is very solid at the technical level. The game design is the same, so if you didn't like the quests or whatever then it wouldn't be worth it, but for $4 I definitely think it's worth a second look. I loved the game.

:D

It is a typo. Even if you were right, it's still a typo, since it says "Rollenspielepiele", not "Rollenspielespiele". And if you apply your logic, the word should at least read "Rollenspielspiele" (which would still be a silly word, but more in accordance with German language). I guess when it comes to spoken languages there is no such thing as "wrong", but there is such a thing as "nonsense". :P This is supposed to be an informative article, not a poem, so you can expect it to use common words that all German speakers are familiar with and not something the author just made up. There's being tolerant and then there's being unreasonable just for the sake of proving your tolerance.
