"It's gone!"

Rex Nebular and the Cosmic Genderbender, a fun comedic Sci-Fi adventure game that's also a curious relic from the pre-political correctness era, is available for only $5.99 for Windows and Mac OS X on GOG.com.

A priceless vase is lost on a distant planet that doesn't exist. An irate colonel wants it back. And only one man is experienced enough...skilled enough...and foolish enough to retrieve it: interstellar adventurer and bungling bachelor Rex Nebular! Join Rex as he pilots the Slippery Pig on a crash course for Terra Androgena, a planet populated entirely by bizarre alien women with big agendas of their own. Overcome the dizzying array of obstacles and endless traps preventing Rex from returning the priceless pottery. Feel the grotesque effects of the frightening Gender Bender machine!

Rex Nebular and the Cosmic Genderbender is another classic adventure from the days long gone to hit GOG.com. It's an adventure game sporting the classic point-and-click interface and unmistakable 2D graphics. It's full of cheesy humor, popular pulp science-fiction tropes, quirky puzzles, and an amount of sexual stereotypes that would get any game banned or at least heavily protested in modern times. Whether you secretly enjoy this type of humor or you're adamantly against it, you should get this one if only to see how much games have changed as a medium over the course of the last 20-or-so years.

Become the space adventurer and self proclaimed "cool man" to explore weird alien planets and even weirder pop-culture of the early 1990s in Rex Nebular and the Cosmic Genderbender, for only $5.99 on GOG.com.

hunvagy: They still have to redeem themselves with GalCiv 3, because for me at least, Sins of a Solar Empire was a letdown compared to GalCiv 2
Sins was made by Ironclad, not Stardock. They only published the game, and helped a little with the development.
A politically incorrect game? Wishlisted!
Aaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, thanks. ;)

To me this week felt a bit weak compared to last week. We got 3 indies + pre-order but only one good old game. Surely there was another easy DOSBoxable Tommo title that could have shown up.

Fesin: Admit it, G-Doc, your Jaw dropped to the floor when you saw that somebody actually correctly guessed this title, right? :p
Actually, we figured this would be an easy one... ;-)

JudasIscariot: I'd check that document on page 74 and 75 :)

Legal doc with Tommo treasures.

SLP2000: I did, but there's nothing about RotP there. So who has the rights to RotP?
With Microprose rights in general, a lot of them were split between Atari and Sid Meier's new company Firaxis (which is part of Take 2 now)
But it would be a bit weird if the 3 games using this engine were split like that
Sometimes rights just seem to get lost down the back of filing cabinets, like with NOLF:

I can name at least 2 'Infogrames' titles that aren't on that list too - Cool Boarders / Boarder Country and Beetle Crazy Cup, dunno what happened to them either (unless VW's legal time noticed the second one existed or something, because I don't think it was actually licensed!)

Novotnus: It misses the 'Eeexcellent!' subtitle :)
What, you mean you didn't hear it?
I'm glad to see that GOG is still releasing these good old point-and-click adventures. I will eventually get this game, but I barely remember having heard about it and still miss some classics. Since we are in Sci-Fi territory, how about "UNIVERSE", GOG?

Finally. Granted, it's not the best Micropose adventure game, but it is fun one.

Vote it up on the wishlist.
Wait. Oh god. I sold a copy of this like four years ago for $50!

AHAHAHAHAHA. Wow. I never expected to see THIS pop up here!
high rated
I was both surprised and pleased at the timing of this release. Particularly so since I'm in the middle of implementing support for this very game in ScummVM, and only last night finally got the first game screen to display properly. So it looks like, when I finish, that ScummVM will have another game that people can buy cheaply from GOG. \o/

Well, back then, the key market of Microprose wasn't adventure games.

Rex Nebular and RoTP had mild receptions ( and that condemned the product line ), but actually prove to be fun and interesting. Well , Rex can be seen as politically incorrect or weird. Not unlike leather goddesses of Phobos 2.

Now I'm curious to see whether we will see some of the flight sims added to the catalogue. Falcon 3.0, together with it's expansions ( Mig 29, Hornet and fighting tiger ) would be tremendous value .

ALH: I still own this on the Amiga.Haven't set up my Amiga in ages but i played the game back in the day.It is try and die of the very highest order and i didn't make it very far but due to the very quirky design and humour i had a good time nonetheless.Weird Dreams has somehow always stuck with me and i'd definitely appreciate an easy access DOS version here on GOG.

JudasIscariot: I think I saw the Amiga version of the screenshot shown by hunvagy above your post. Looked a lot better than the DOS version....
Amiga version: http://www.mobygames.com/game/amiga/weird-dreams/screenshots/gameShotId,516789/

PC version (VGA): http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/weird-dreams/screenshots/gameShotId,11000/

Seem pretty much the same to me. Maybe you played the PC version in EGA or CGA, not VGA?

But, being a 1988/1989 game, the sound card support in the PC version is in suspect. I think it supported Adlib only for the theme music, and the game sound effects were awful PC beeper sounds. So the Amiga version probably sounds much better.

JudasIscariot: You know, that whole period was kind of weird. Even the consoles at the time had better looking versions of games :) I remember playing Pool of Radiance and Wizardry 1 on the NES and when I went to look at their DOS counterparts, I was quite taken aback...
Back when PC games were restricted only to CGA or EGA graphics, yeah.

When PC games started supporting VGA (mainly from 1989 onwards I think), it became more complicated. Sometimes you could say Amiga version still looked better (e.g. sometimes smoother scrolling, or some advanced graphical tricks that the PC version didn't have; Lethal Weapon is one such game, albeit the PC version looks quite good too), sometimes PC version looked better (e.g. Space Quest 4, Wing Commander etc.). I guess it usually looked the best on the system where the game originated.

GOG you did it again. Yet another game I've been hoping for, this was a great one. For those who don't know, it uses the same engine as Dragonsphere. Really witty and fun game.

Wow you guys, the DOS Box guys and the nGLiDE guys are amazing - loving your work!
I take it that once you implement support for this DragonSphere (and Return of the Phantom, I guess) will fall right in too, yeah?
