Free Mars, or die trying!

Red Faction, a critically acclaimed and extremely revolutionary *wink* first-person shooter with destructible terrain and a close-range hard Sci-Fi setting, is available 70% off on GOG.com, as a part of our Red Faction 1+2 Bundle deal. That's only $2.99 for the first 72 hours!

You are Parker, a weary miner who works for the corrupt Ultor Corporation. You reside on Mars, sometime in the future, and when a plague spreads through the mining community, some of the Ultor employees uncover a massive conspiracy. Thus ensues a battle by a group of lowly workers, provoked to uprise by your own actions and to expose the deadly experiments Ultor has unleashed onto its work force. History will judge you. Make sure your faction wins, so its your people who get to write the history books.

Red Faction was a very big leap forward in the FPS genre. It introduced many new technical features such as location-based damage system, real-time skeletal deformation, advanced physics simulation, destructible environment and more. The unprecedented (at the time) interaction with the environment creates a very strong feeling of immersion that is very impressive even by today's standards. With an engaging story to tell, a unique set of features such as location-based damage system, real-time skeletal deformation, operational land, sea, and air vehicles, advanced physics simulation, and destructible environment, it's safe to say the game well deserved all the critical acclaim it got.

Play your part in the history of Mars in Red Faction, for only $2.99 on GOG.com. The special 70% off release bundle offer lasts only until Friday, February 14, at 10:59AM GMT. The games are also available separately, 60% off.

thanks for the replies. I am gonna get them both if no one mentions anything contradictory
I actually really loved the first Red Faction. That and the First Summoner were really the best of the early ps2 games during that long draught. Kind of a piece of the Mars stuff from total recall and the gimmicky, but occasionally cool geo-form (?) tech that the games utilized. Still, not a bad one overall and I finished 2 and Armageddon also. Just need Guerilla.
Oh my goodness. This was one of my favorite games as a kid.

gandalf.nho: Never played the series, how's the quality and especially diofficulty?:
It's been years since I've played this, so take this with a grain of salt: From what i remember, the game is pretty challenging throughout, with a noticeable spike in difficulty about half-way through (about the time the Mercenaries show up, I think). I don't remember much of the story after that point, but I do remember enjoying the first half at least.
I have these DRM-free from Gamersgate, but particularly if there have been fixes, I guess I'm in again. I'm torn between being glad they're here and sad that Volition probably isn't seeing a penny. (No dig on Nordic; they have the rights fair and square.)
Does Red Faction Armageddon have any way of getting to GOG? It's shown on sites with Syfy Games as a distributor. It's also pasted on the case and game photo at stores (maybe since Syfy made a film based on Red Faction). Would that interfere with a DRM-free release?
Though I did think Nordic scored all the rights to the series. Perhaps the tag "distributor" isn't too serious (?)

Volition - they would be my personal saints if they made a third Freespace ... Maybe after Chris Roberts opened up the market for space operas again.
DRM free Guerilla! Now that would be a release. I found the first Red Faction preety sweet since it had that Half LIfe-LITE kind of vibe to it. God, that couple of years was like a renaissance for gaming .
Not Z, but... fuck yeah! I was a very latecomer to the original Red Faction but I loved that game on my Mac (when I was still foolish enough to game on one =P) when I bought it back in '04 - bought it for like ten bucks then as the Apple store was trying to get rid of it; some of the best money spent on a game. :) Funnily enough I didn't discover its great multiplayer until about a year later even. Spent playing it a couple of years with that then with a small really nice groups of guys (and a few gals from time to time). Probably the only game in which I was good at sniping anything. Also, some matches I cared more about demolishing the environment than killing people. What can I say? Destroying bridges, collapsing houses, and burrowing tunnels was quite entertaining at times.

Anyway, for 3 bucks? This is a no brainer! :) Might as well pick up its sequel which I've never actually played. Thanks, Nordic.

DustFalcon1985: Let's bring votes to Red Faction: Guerrilla here: http://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/red_faction_guerrilla

Got all 100% gamerscore points on the Xbox 360. Got around 85%-ish trophies on the PS3. Guerrilla is a good open world game IMO.

Armageddon on the other hand is too linear, boring & repetitive.

ReynardFox: Interesting, I personally found Guerilla listless and boring, while I quite enjoyed Armageddon.
agreed I could not get through half of the game before lose all interest. While it is amusing at first like many destruction/do what you want games for me it become aimless.
I haven't played these 2 games so I will have to buy them (I did LOVE Guerrilla though).

Regarding Red Faction: Armageddon, it wasn't as good as Guerrilla was to me (A linear FPS with no open world) but it was nice.
I think Armageddon's problem was that people were expecting a big game(dare I say an actual game?) instead of the short one they got.
Oh and the story was... Cheesy would be a kind way of putting it *BUT* I liked that... a little bit.
Haha. Just set up RF1... 'D3D Rendering Cache' default at 8MB. Pfft. That only wastes 2.992GB of my VRAM. =P Naturally I set it at a whopping 32MB! (Max setting) ;)
Question for those who've played these - I'm not normally a fan of shooters at all, but sometimes enjoy them if they've got something else going for them besides the shooting (e.g. strong theme/atmosphere - Realms of the Haunting, Undying, etc.) Should I be interested in these, or are they pretty much just doing the shooter thing?

JinseiNGC224: Now you've piqued my interest! Your a thorn in my side! (pun intended!)
+1 for correct spelling of "piqued". :)
Old good memories on this one. An excellent release. Thanks GOG!

P.S. And a fantastic prize of course..
